Hello September!
Yeah, September is here!!!!
I call September the in between month. That time between the beautiful summer and when autumn is here.
If you love summer veggies then this is the last chance and if you love fall veggies then you will get the first of them this month, even though many are not considered to be in season just yet.
It is also the month that the kids go back to school and when routines become a thing again.
What Should I Stockpile In September?
In September my favourite thing to do is to get the last of the summer fruit and veggies and then dehydrate them for winter.
There is so much choice here and it comes down to personal preference.
Ask yourself, what fruits and veggies from the summer would you miss more and like to enjoy throughout autumn and winter?
For us this leads to lots of dehydrated strawberries and dehydrated raspberries. But you might have your own ideas.
Top 10 September Foods In Season
September is summer meets autumn and a great month for enjoying a mix of end of season foods vs beginning of season produce.
Celebrate apples as they are now in season. The apples of the summer are replaced with the best tasting apples of the autumn season. These apples are also at a very good price so stockpile them and make everything you love with apples.
Such as an air fryer apple crumble, air fryer apple pie or how about a slow cooker pork leg joint.
Add some pears to your apples. The apples are of course joined with pears which are also in season. You can mix and match with apples and pears in your recipe and then keep the same time and temps.
Try our air fryer pear chips, or our apple crumble that is made in the air fryer with both apples and pears.
Swap the pears for plum. One of Sofia’s favourite fruits is plums and they are in season in September.
What we did (this is the video) is make some plum crumble in the air fryer in the same way that we usually do with an apple crumble and it was delicious.
Then my next favourite September food is broccoli. I remember Dom would always ask why I always buy broccoli and I would always reply with how cheap broccoli is, how easy it is to cook and how it can be used in a lot of different recipes.
That was back in 2000 and I still say the same now, just I have gadgets to cook the broccoli with instead.
Try out air fryer frozen broccoli, instant pot broccoli, along with how to microwave broccoli.
Where there is broccoli there is also cauliflower. I will often cook a mix of broccoli and cauliflower together and they are both in season in September.
You can cook air fryer broccoli and cauliflower together, steam instant pot cauliflower, or make a soup maker cauliflower soup.
Carrots are in season too. I love those mixed bags of broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots. You will be pleased to know you can recreate this fresh or blanch for the freezer as all three are in season at the same time.
We have done this with instant pot frozen veggies, but you have so much choice.
Other carrot favourites include slow cooker honey carrots, air fryer carrot fries and instant pot steamed carrots.
Cabbage is another great veggie in season in September. What we love to do with cabbage is to steam it in the instant pot with some butter and then serve our instant pot buttered cabbage with whatever meat we have just cooked in the air fryer.
Its delicious and so easy.
Or our plan B is air fryer fried cabbage which goes crispy like air fryer kale and so yummy.
Spinach is also still in season. I grew up having it with some butter in the microwave and wilting spinach the microwave way is still our favourite way to enjoy spinach.
You can also cook air fryer spinach, make a soup maker spinach soup or use the soup maker to make a green smoothie.
Potatoes are now in season for autumn and beyond. If you are air frying potatoes, we highly recommend red potatoes which we mention in our air fryer cookbook.
You can also make air fryer chips, air fryer salt and pepper chips, or go back to basics with air fryer baked potatoes.
For the best meat in September, duck is in season and perfect for cooking in the air fryer and the instant pot.
We love to cook air fryer whole duck, air fryer duck breasts and instant pot whole duck.
What To Dehydrate In September?
My favourite food to dehydrate is apple and pear chips. They are delicious and if you have not dried air fryer apple chips yet, then it is an absolute must.
You can also do any of your favourite herbs such as dehydrated mint, or dehydrated rosemary or some of your favourite fruit that is heading out of season.
