Green Smoothie
I remember when I first had a green smoothie. I was on one of those 7 day juice diets, designed by Jason Vale that I believe Katie Price was following at the time for weight loss after pregnancy.
She also had a fitness DVD out too and it amazed me how replacing two meals a day with a green smoothie could help me lose weight so easily.
That was way back in 2007 and it was my first taste of a green smoothie.
But what I hated is that it was so complicated.
There were way too many ingredients in the green smoothie, and it became such an effort.
There was also a LOT of peeling to do, a lot of juicing and it felt like I had done a workout just grocery shopping for it.
Plus, I thought it was way too expensive for the ingredients I needed to source.
That was 7 years before I bought my first ever soup maker and before I realised that frozen fruit could be your best friend when it comes to green smoothie drinks.
In today’s recipe, I will be showing you how to make a green smoothie in the soup maker, with only a few ingredients and zero peeling and chopping.
It is also perfect for if you are new the soup maker and want to use the smoothie feature.

Can Soup Makers Make Smoothies?
Yes, they sure can. But note, when making soup maker drinks that some soup makers are better than others.
For example, I have this Ninja soup maker. Because Ninja makes the best blenders, their hot and cold soup maker is the best.
It has an amazing blade and can get through frozen ice with no problem at all.
BUT if using a soup maker like the Morphy Richards its just not as good. So, make sure your fruit is thawed prior to using it.
Can I Use Frozen Fruit In My Smoothies?
Yes, you sure can and I recommend doing so. You can throw into the soup maker your frozen bananas, frozen strawberries, along with any other frozen fruit.
Using frozen fruit saves you time on prep, you don’t have to worry about food waste, and it will be wonderfully cool during the warmer summer months.
Smoothie With Greek Yoghurt & Banana
What I like to do is make a smoothie with Greek yoghurt and banana as the base ingredients.
They are the two special ingredients that make a creamy smoothie.
You can then adapt your smoothie with your favourite add ins.
Such as a strawberry and banana in soup maker. Simply add to the banana and the yoghurt, frozen strawberries and you have a delicious smoothie.
Then you could also expand on this with frozen mango or frozen pineapple.
Though my favourite add ins are frozen strawberries, mango or pineapple and some fresh spinach.
If you have not had a spinach yoghurt smoothie yet, then they are amazing and that is the style of smoothie I will be showing you to make in the soup maker.
Best Yoghurt For Smoothies?
The best yoghurt for smoothies is your own. We use the instant pot to make the best homemade Greek yoghurt and then add that in.
You could also use a high fat protein yoghurt if you are building muscle or go with fat free if you are wanting to achieve weight loss.
Substitute For Yoghurt In Smoothies?
For those that are dairy free, or just don’t want yoghurt in their smoothies, then note you can substitute it.
If you want a creamy texture like yoghurt creates then swap it for a vegan milk, such as coconut milk.
Spinach Smoothie With Water
A spinach yoghurt smoothie is AMAZING because of the combination of frozen fruit, yoghurt, and spinach. Plus, spinach carries a lot of water.
Take out the yoghurt and replace it with water and you will have a thin smoothie. But it will be like a juice rather than a smoothie so does taste nice.
So, if you want to make a spinach smoothie with water, note that you can, but it wont be thick.

Green Smoothie Ingredients
Fruit – You will want plenty of frozen fruit to make a satisfying smoothie with. My favourite combination is frozen bananas, strawberries and either mango or pineapple.
Spinach – I also recommend a cup of fresh spinach and this single ingredient will do a great job of transforming it into a healthy green smoothie.
Yoghurt – For a creamy, thick smoothie that will rival McDonalds I recommend using Greek yoghurt. It is amazing in smoothies and you don’t need a big portion to make it work.
Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this green smoothie recipe it has just been our Ninja Soup Maker. We have this one and its wonderful for many types of soup maker recipes.
I also suggest buying some good quality plastic smoothie containers (these are the ones we have) and they are amazing for serving your smoothies in and you can also take your smoothie with you on the way to work in these.

How To Make A Green Smoothie?
- Plan. I like to plan first which fruit that I am using in my banana yoghurt smoothie. Usually, I will have a few frozen fruit bags in the freezer and I can decide from there.
- Load. Then I will load all ingredients into the soup maker, making sure that the harder to blend food is on top.
- Beeps. Blend your smoothie using the frozen drink setting on your soup maker. When it beeps, check to see if it needs a pulse, and if not its ready for pouring and serving.
And I am sure you can see now how easy it is to make a smoothie with yoghurt in your soup maker.
How Do You Thicken A Strawberry Smoothie?
To make your strawberry smoothie thicker, I recommend adding in extra bananas. Frozen bananas are amazing for thickening a milkshake or smoothie and you will be amazed at the results.
You can also add in extra Greek yoghurt to make your smoothie thicker too.
Green Smoothie Tips & Tricks
- For the best results add the yoghurt last and the spinach first. This is because the spinach carries a lot of water, but you also don’t want any big bits of spinach leftover.
- Mix and match your favourite frozen fruit. My favourite fruit to add is mango and always makes a smoothie taste delicious.
- It is fantastic for weight loss and replacing one meal a day and snacks with this Greek yoghurt smoothie can help you lose 5 pounds a week.
Interesting Soup Maker Trick – If you want to enjoy a green smoothie twice a day, then make it once, leave the leftovers in the soup maker, then add an extra cup of frozen pineapple and an ice cube and blend and it will recreate your cold smoothie.
Can you make ahead your smoothie? Yes, you can. But I only do this if I am adding in extra frozen fruit later, like I mentioned above. Otherwise, you will end up with a warm smoothie that will have gone flat and lack that fresh texture.
