Cabbage In Air Fryer
As a kid I absolutely despised cabbage in any shape or form. Many because it was boiled in a pan, boiled for way too long, never had any flavour to it and was totally over cooked.
That was of course cabbage at school, but it was like that in so many other places you tried it.
So, whenever I saw cabbage, I would always run a mile in the opposite direction.
But since learning to cook myself and embracing cooking with kitchen gadgets I have had a brand new love affair with cabbage.
My favourite was instant pot cabbage. Cooked with some butter and the butter melts into the cabbage creating the most delicious ever buttered cabbage.
But there is a new kid in town and that is air fried cabbage. No boiling is required, it tastes delicious, and you can leave the cabbage in the air fryer a little longer and it turns into delicious cabbage chips that is just like our air fryer kale chips.
Shop Local Air Fryer Challenge
We love shopping local and have a favourite greengrocer that we get weekly veggie boxes from and a local butcher that supplies a lot of the meat you see on Recipe This. We often find that the quality is much better, and the prices are similar too. We challenged ourselves to make as many meals as possible out of a veg box + meat box and share with you the results.
This air fryer recipe is one of those recipes and click here to view our air fryer shop local recipes.
Can You Air Fry Cabbage?
Yes, you can air fry cabbage and you will love how delicious this air fried cabbage recipe is. When we were making the video for it (view it here) we all wanted the cabbage to ourselves and it was hard having to split it three ways!
You can air fry cabbage like we are doing and make it nice and crispy in a shredded cabbage snack kind of theme, or you can make cabbage steaks in the air fryer. Both methods are equally as delicious.
Do You Need To Blanch Cabbage Before Frying?
No need to blanch your cabbage before air frying, as the air fryer can cook cabbage FAST by just tossing it in oil and seasonings in a similar way to if you fried cabbage in a frying pan.
Should I Soak Cabbage Before Cooking?
No need to soak cabbage before cooking either. Its brilliant because you can shred the cabbage and air fry without the need for any soaking or blanching beforehand. This also adds to the great flavour of the cabbage and avoids that old fashioned over cooked cabbage bland flavour, that you probably remember as a kid.
Does Cabbage Shrink When Fried?
OMG yes when you air fry cabbage, brace yourself as it will shrink. The proof is in the photos. This photo is of the air fryer cabbage before it is air fried and as you can see it fills the air fryer basket.
And then of course, try not to get too upset when once cooked your cabbage has shrunk to this.
Its up there with kale and let’s not forget about how much spinach shrinks.
Air Fryer Cabbage Recipe Ingredients
Cabbage – We used spring cabbage in this recipe. It is perfect for making crispy in the air fryer, whilst a savoy cabbage lends itself more to the instant pot.
Oil – You will need a small quantity of oil to toss the cabbage in, before air frying. When you air fry shredded cabbage, the cabbage then goes crispy thanks to the oil. For the best results we recommend extra virgin olive oil.
Seasoning – Its all about personal choice with how you would like your veggies in the air fryer seasoned. I mix and match a lot and grab what I have in my kitchen cupboard. For example if I want Indian cabbage I will use garam masala along with some curry powder and cumin. But for a simple cabbage recipe for everyday cooking I usually opt for salt, pepper, oregano and parsley.
Can You Recommend An Air Fryer?
I often get asked which air fryers I recommend and which one I use. In 95% of our air fryer recipes, we use either the Philips Air Fryer XL or the Cosori XL because they are the best ones, we have found out of many air fryers we have tried over the years. You can click on the links above and read up on them. But if you would rather have a dual air fryer we recommend this Ninja Dual (make sure you order the right one as not all are good) or the Philips Dual.
How To Cook Cabbage In Air Fryer?
- Prep. Shred your cabbage and place it into a bowl with oil and seasonings. Mix well with your hands to make sure the cabbage is well coated in the oil and seasoning.
- Cook. Then place the cabbage into the air fryer basket and air fry for 6 minutes at 180c/360f, shaking it halfway through for an even cook.
Air Fryer Cabbage And Potatoes
Now you know all about basic cabbage in the air fryer, then what about the British favourite leftover recipe. Yes, you can make air fryer bubble and squeak and we do so every year on Boxing Day and love it.
If you have not heard of bubble and squeak then note it is simply leftover cabbage and potatoes and so good and perfect for leftovers from Christmas, Thanksgiving or even St Paddy’s Day.
You can also mix it up with other leftovers such as making air fryer cabbage and onions or air fryer cabbage and sausage.
How Long To Cook Cabbage In Air Fryer?
We recommend 6 minutes for cabbage in the air fryer. This will make it just like our pictures with a lot of crisp to it. But if you want it more crispy, then you can give the air fryer cabbage another shake and add a couple of extra minutes.
