Sausage Rolls In Air Fryer

We love sausage rolls in the Milner house.

We love to cook Greggs frozen sausage rolls in the air fryer, make a WW wraps version with our air fryer slimming world sausage rolls, love mini frozen sausage rolls in air fryer as well as Greggs vegan sausage rolls.

But best of all we love to make homemade sausage rolls in air fryer. They are amazing, you can make them with your own shortcrust pastry (we use our air fryer pie crust) or you can make puff pastry sausage rolls in air fryer.

The best thing of all – its your choice of how you make air fryer sausage rolls….

Today, for our air fryer sausage rolls we are going to show you the puff pastry method and give it an Aussie spin by cooking sausage rolls in an air fryer with a tomato puree (they call it tomato paste) influence, which has been inspired by my love for an air fryer meat pie.

Beyond our air fryer sausage rolls recipe, we have many more easy recipes using puff pastry (perfect for pastry leftovers) including: air fryer chicken pot pie, slow cooker beef and ale pie, air fryer crème egg bombs, pie maker meat pie, or push the boat out with some air fryer beef wellington.

What Is A Sausage Roll?

If you don’t live in the UK or Australia, there’s a good chance you haven’t come across a sausage roll before.

A sausage roll is made by wrapping seasoned sausage meat in pastry before baking until golden and crisp. It’s similar to our air fryer pigs in blankets, although those use mini sausages or hot dogs wrapped in bacon rather than sausage meat wrapped in pastry.

Whether enjoyed as a snack, lunch or party food, sausage rolls are a much-loved bakery favourite.

Can I Cook Sausage Rolls In An Air Fryer?

Absolutely! You can cook sausage rolls in an air fryer, and they turn out beautifully crisp on the outside with perfectly cooked sausage meat inside.

The main thing to consider is the size of your air fryer. Some smaller models may not have enough room to cook several full-sized sausage rolls at once.

In my air fryer, I can usually fit three sausage rolls side by side, with a fourth placed across the top to make the most of the space, all in a single layer.

If you’re short on space, an easy alternative is to cut them into mini sausage rolls before cooking. They’re ideal for parties, buffets or lunchboxes and cook even quicker than full-sized sausage rolls.

In this recipe, we’ll show you how to make both full-sized air fryer sausage rolls and mini sausage rolls in the air fryer, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

Can You Make Sausage Rolls With Shortcrust Pastry?

Yes, you can! Shortcrust pastry sausage rolls are absolutely delicious and have a wonderfully crisp, buttery texture.

Although puff pastry is the traditional choice, I often make homemade sausage rolls with shortcrust pastry because it creates a sturdier pastry that’s perfect for slicing, serving and enjoying warm or cold. It’s easily one of my favourite ways to make sausage rolls.

This is our homemade sausage roll with shortcrust pastry and perfect for when you are making a quiche or a pie and have some leftover.

I use my own homemade shortcrust pastry recipe, which in the US they would call an air fryer pie crust. It has just two main ingredients plus water to bind and I have a batch made in no time at all.

Do You Cook Sausages Before Making Sausage Rolls?

No, you don’t need to cook the sausages before making sausage rolls.

The sausage meat cooks at the same time as the pastry, so by the time the pastry is golden and crisp, the filling will be perfectly cooked too. This makes homemade sausage rolls quick, easy and much less hassle.

Can I Put A Greggs Sausage Roll In An Air Fryer?

Yes, you can! A Greggs sausage roll in an air fryer reheats beautifully, giving you crisp, flaky pastry without drying out the filling.

You can also cook the raw frozen Greggs sausage rolls sold by Iceland straight from frozen. If you’re cooking frozen sausage rolls, follow our frozen sausage rolls in the air fryer guide. If you’re reheating a bakery sausage roll from Greggs, head to our reheat sausage rolls in an air fryer instructions later in this post for the best results.

Sausage Rolls In A Ninja Air Fryer

Although we’re using a Cosori Air Fryer for this recipe, you can easily cook sausage rolls in a Ninja Air Fryer too. The method also works perfectly in the Ninja Foodi using the air fryer basket.

To make Ninja Air Fryer sausage rolls, simply select the Air Fry programme and use the same cooking time and temperature as the recipe. If you have a Ninja Dual Air Fryer, you can spread the sausage rolls across both drawers for even cooking.

If you’re ever unsure which setting to use on your Ninja model, simply choose the Air Fry function for the best results.

Air Fryer Sausage Roll Ingredients

Air Fryer Sausage Roll Ingredients

Meat â€“ The best sausage roll air fryer recipe starts with some quality sausage meat. I like to get mine from the butchers by the tube. The benefit of sausage meat from the butchers is that it carries less fat and doesn’t make your sausage rolls all greasy.

Pastry – This is when you can choose how you prefer your air fryer sausage roll, is it with puff pastry or some homemade pastry? For today’s recipe we are making puff pastry sausage rolls in air fryer.

Egg â€“ You need the egg for your egg wash. I have found that you can spray with extra virgin olive oil, but you don’t get the same colour on the sausage rolls. Just mix an egg with a fork and use a pastry brush to smoother over the sausage roll pastry.

Optional â€“ I love tomato puree and it gives a lovely taste to sausage rolls in the air fryer. Simply add a layer of tomato puree to the puff pastry, before you add the sausage meat, and it will really flavour them up.

Can You Recommend An Air Fryer?

I often get asked which air fryers I recommend and which one I use. In 95% of our air fryer recipes, we use either the Philips Air Fryer XL or the Cosori XL because they are the best ones, we have found out of many air fryers we have tried over the years. You can click on the links above and read up on them. But if you would rather have a dual air fryer we recommend this Ninja Dual (make sure you order the right one as not all are good) or the Philips Dual.

How To Cook Sausage Rolls In Air Fryer?

air-fryer-sausage-rolls-step-by-step
  • Prep. If making your own pastry start with this step, if not start at the rolling process. Place flour and butter into a bowl and rub the fat into the flour until it almost resembles breadcrumbs. Add a little water at a time and mix with your hands until you have a pastry dough.
  • Roll. Next roll out the pastry, add a layer of tomato puree followed by a layer of sausage meat and then wrap up in a roll until you have something that resembles a HUGE sausage roll. Cut into mini sausage rolls or into medium sized sausage rolls.
  • Wash. Add egg wash over your pastry and then load into the air fryer basket.
  • Cook. Air fry for 10 minutes at 200c/400f before serving.

And that is how easy sausage rolls in air fryer are to make and cook.

Mini Sausage Rolls In Air Fryer

When I make homemade sausage rolls in air fryer, I will use one sheet of puff pastry. Or when you get the ready to roll blocks, I will use one block.

Then I will roll out the one block of puff pastry and then once I have a really big rolled out pastry sheet, I will slice it in half lengthways to create two narrow sheets.

Sheet 1 will then become regular sized air fryer sausage rolls and I will usually chop it into quarters which is the ideal size for the air fryer basket.

Sheet 2 will be made the EXACT same way the only difference is that you are chopping your uncooked sausage rolls into mini sausage roll sizes instead.

How Long To Cook Sausage Rolls In An Air Fryer?

The sausage rolls cooking time in an air fryer is just 10 minutes. This gives you perfectly cooked sausage rolls with a crisp pastry and deliciously warm filling.

If you want that extra golden finish, similar to the bakery-style sausage rolls you know and love, we recommend adding an extra 3 minutes at 200°C/400°F.

For mini sausage rolls in the air fryer, reduce the cooking time slightly. Because they are much smaller, they only need around 8 minutes at 200°C/400°F. It’s one of the reasons we love making mini sausage rolls in the air fryer — they cook so quickly!

What Temperature To Cook Sausage Rolls?

The best sausage rolls air fryer temperature is a combination of settings:

  • 180°C/360°F for cooking the sausage rolls all the way through
  • 200°C/400°F for creating that beautiful golden, crispy pastry

The higher temperature helps give your sausage rolls that delicious golden-brown colour and bakery-style finish, just like the ones you would buy from Greggs.

How Long Do Homemade Sausage Rolls Last?

If stored correctly in the fridge, homemade sausage rolls will last for up to 3 days.

That said, leftover sausage rolls don’t usually last very long in our house! These are the kind of sausage rolls that disappear quickly — sometimes within an hour of being made.

Can You Reheat Sausage Rolls In An Air Fryer?

Yes, you can reheat sausage rolls in an air fryer, and it’s one of the best ways to enjoy them again.

We use this method often, especially when we’ve bought sausage rolls from a bakery and want to warm them up at home. The air fryer brings back the crisp pastry while keeping the filling deliciously warm.

How Long To Reheat Sausage Rolls In An Air Fryer?

To reheat sausage rolls in an air fryer, cook them for approximately 5 minutes at 160°C/320°F.

This will heat them through without making the pastry soft or soggy.

We also love reheating sausage rolls in the air fryer and using any leftover pastry scraps to make mini pizzas. It makes a quick and tasty leftover supper.

Can You Freeze Sausage Rolls?

Yes, you absolutely can freeze sausage rolls.

The important thing is to let them cool completely first and make sure they haven’t already been reheated.

You can freeze sausage rolls either cooked or uncooked, depending on what works best for you. They are a brilliant make-ahead option to keep in the freezer for an easy snack, lunch or party food.

What To Do With Leftover Sausage Meat?

If you’re wondering what to do with leftover sausage meat, my favourite option is to turn it into air fryer sausage balls (also known as air fryer stuffing balls).

The great thing is that the sausage meat used for making sausage rolls is the same sausage meat you can use for stuffing, so there’s no need to buy anything extra.

One batch of air fryer stuffing balls uses roughly half a pack of sausage meat. This means you can use one half to make delicious homemade sausage rolls and save the other half for crispy, golden stuffing balls in the air fryer.

It’s a simple way to make the most of your ingredients and create two tasty recipes from one pack of sausage meat.

  1. Hi Sam! Fellow Brit here (in US). Which US brand of sausage meat do you find to be closer to the type we have in the UK? I always find the US brands to be very coarse and heavily seasoned. Thanks!

    • Hi Charlotte,

After some research here what i found out:

Johnsonville, is probably the most favoured sausage. They make a wide variety of links, patties, they are widely available in all grocery stores. You can then break it up and use as an American alternative to sausage meat.

The above is from one of our American readers, as we have not had to buy sausage meat in the US and thought that it was best coming from him and i hope it helps. 🙂

  2. This recipe looks great but I don’t know what sausage to use..if I use pork sausage meat or Italian sausage meat will it not make the crust greasy..?

  3. A sausage roll made with pork chicken or Turkey mince and lots of vegetables is a much healthier alternative with added spices and sauce. Everyone raves over my dausage rolls.

    • 300g = 0.661 of a pound. Though i find it easier to just imagine half a pack of sausagemeat or how much sausage meat you would need on a rolled out piece of pastry.

    • Hi Karissa,

I always use raw packs of sausage meat. You can of course use raw sausages and remove the skin instead if you can’t get sausage meat.
