Flapjack Air Fryer

If you have not heard…we have made you an air fryer cookbook. Its called the complete air fryer cookbook and is full to bursting with easy to follow everyday air fryer recipes using ingredients that you would normally have in.

Not a weird ingredient in sight!

But what I was asked during the pre-order process is whether or not it included air fryer flapjacks. I said it didn’t and thought to myself why didn’t I include them?

After all, in a flapjacks air fryer recipe you’re using ingredients you already have in and they are so easy with hardly any washing up.

I also realised it has been a long time since I last updated this air fryer flapjacks recipe for you…..it was back in 2018 and I remember how much Jorge loved them and at two, they were perfect for him to walk around the house with and create a lot of crumbs. Thankfully we had a dog that helped with the clean up!

Air Fryer Healthy Flapjacks Recipe
This is the original image Chef Dom took of the air fryer flapjacks back in 2018. I love that you can chop small pieces of flapjack like he did back then for Jorge, or you can go bigger.

Today we are talking everything air fryer flapjacks from time and temp to what ingredients to add especially if you want to change ingredients and make healthy flapjacks with honey.

Beyond our air fryer flapjacks recipe, we have many more easy treats for your sweet tooth including: air fryer rock cakes, air fryer mug cakes, air fryer cake, air fryer cupcakes and lets not forget about air fryer lemon drizzle cake that we also show you how to transform into copycat Mr Kipling Lemon Slices.

Can You Air Fry Flapjacks?

Yes, you can air fry flapjacks and you will love the easy prep and the cooking process of these delicious homemade flapjacks.

Normally if you didn’t use an air fryer you would melt the butter in a pan, then use a bowl to mix them and then an ovenproof dish to cook the flapjacks in the oven.

Now with air fryer flapjacks you use the same silicone baking pan for melting the butter in the air fryer, as you do for cooking the flapjacks in the air fryer. Plus, I use the same bowl that I weighed out the porridge oats in, that I mix the flapjack ingredients together in.

Are Flapjacks Oat Bars?

In the UK we call them flapjacks but I love how around the world we have different names for the delicious flapjack.

For example, you might know a flapjack as granola bars, oat bars, or cereal bars.

If I was to rename a flapjack to something more descriptive I would say oat bars would be a great name. Because they are loaded with oats, butter, sugar and then a sticky sugar such as golden syrup.

Is Flapjacks Good For You?

This depends on what you would call good for you or a healthy flapjacks recipe or if you would just name these as healthier flapjacks.

You see, flapjacks can be made with healthy oats, using brown sugar, a healthier fat and then making flapjacks with honey. Verses making flapjacks traditionally with golden syrup and swapping brown sugar for white.

Though as a kid I always remember the flapjacks came covered in chocolate and they certainly were not a healthy flapjacks recipe.

Or if you are looking for a gluten free flapjacks recipe, then just swap for gluten free oats.

Can You Make Flapjacks With White Sugar?

Yes, you can make flapjacks in air fryer with white sugar, but I wouldn’t recommend doing so.

That is because it will change the flavour of the flapjacks and the flapjacks air fryer recipe is all about a perfect balance of sugars and how the brown sugar and golden syrup work well together.

Do Flapjacks Go Hard When They Cool?

Yes, they do. I know when I make air fryer flapjacks, I get so excited, and want to cut into them straight away, and when you do this the flapjacks can fall apart.

Instead, you need to cool the flapjacks and if you want them quicker then you can do this in the freezer for 30 minutes.

Why Has My Flapjack Not Stuck Together?

If your flapjacks have not stuck together this is usually because the mix wasn’t quite right, or you got a bit excited with the golden syrup and added too much and it’s stopped them from binding together.

How Long Will Homemade Flapjacks Keep?

I recommend for the best tasting flapjacks that you consume within 3 days. Any longer than this and they start to get stale and are just not as nice.

Though when storing your flapjacks opt for a sealed container such as your favourite Tupperware.

Ninja Air Fryer Flapjacks

If you are making Ninja Air Fryer flapjacks, then there is not much of a change that you need to make to this recipe.

The adaption would be the size of your ninja air fryer basket. For example, if making the flapjacks with the ninja dual air fryer, then you would be better doing a rectangular shape that will fit your air fryer, rather than circular like I have done.

Also, if not sure about the air fryer settings on the Ninja opt for the air fry button.

Flapjack Air Fryer Ingredients

Oats – Here in the UK we have porridge oats, over in the USA they have rolled oats. Either will work very well with an air fryer flapjack. Though note if you get healthy oats, they are often bigger and would improve the texture of the flapjacks if you pulsed them in a blender to just reduce the texture.

Fats – Then for fats I much prefer to use unsalted butter, though you can use coconut oil if you are vegan/dairy free or go with another favourite.

Syrup – You have choice…..traditional flapjacks are made with golden syrup but you can swap it for others. Such as using honey or how about maple syrup?

Sugar – Then for that added sugar sweetness we recommend light brown sugar. You don’t need a lot for flapjacks, but it makes them taste so good, so don’t leave it out.

Can You Recommend An Air Fryer?

I often get asked which air fryers I recommend and which one I use. In 95% of our air fryer recipes, we use either the Philips Air Fryer XL or the Cosori XL because they are the best ones, we have found out of many air fryers we have tried over the years. You can click on the links above and read up on them. But if you would rather have a dual air fryer we recommend this Ninja Dual (make sure you order the right one as not all are good) or the Philips Dual.

How To Make Flapjacks In Air Fryer?

air-fryer-flapjacks-step-by-step
  • Melt. Let’s cook flapjack in air fryer. Place your butter into a silicone cake pan and add the golden syrup.  Air fry the mixture at 120c/250f for 4 minutes until the butter is almost melted.
  • Stir. Next stir the butter mixture until melted and add it to a bowl of oats and brown sugar. Keep stirring until everything is well mixed.
  • Cook. Then pour the mixture back into the silicone container and flatten down with a back of the spoon until you have a level layer. Place the flapjack into the air fryer basket and air fry for 20 minutes at 160c/320f or until firm on touch with a golden top.
  • Freeze. Once the air fryer beeps place it onto a plate and then place the plate into the freezer for 30 minutes this will cool it much faster. Then allow to rest on the worktop for another 30 minutes before slicing.

And that is how easy flapjacks in the air fryer are to make and cook.

Air Fryer Flapjacks With Honey

Whilst air fryer flapjacks with golden syrup is the tradition, you must also try air fryer flapjacks with honey.

It has a very similar texture and taste and soaks up into the oats in the same way that golden syrup does.

You can also swap it for another syrup like ingredient such as maple syrup, treacle etc. Or even one of those toffee sauces that you bought for ice cream.

Notes

Cool. You can’t cut the flapjack mixture until its cold and then had chance to fully set. You can speed this up by freezing it for 30 minutes after cooking. I will put it on a plate first so that its easy to transfer to the freezer and the plate wont break.
