Air Fryer Frozen Jacket Potatoes

Not many people know this, BUT when I was in my teens and just before I met Dominic, I worked at a potato factory that made frozen baked potatoes.

It was a small factory on an industrial estate in Yorkshire and it made frozen twice baked potatoes and regular frozen baked potatoes.

You could walk the entire factory in less than 5 minutes and its biggest contract was with McCain and their frozen baked potatoes.

I quit after a month as it just wasn’t for me.

There was nothing wrong with the staff and they were all very friendly and the supervisor was someone I went to school with.

BUT the big problem was they kept running out of gloves and my hands could never handle the starch that came off the potatoes. I looked like I had the worst case of eczema that you had ever seen.

It was not good when you were scraping the potato from its skin by hand when making twice baked potatoes!

But while I was there, I had a wonderful time and OMG I got free baked potatoes every day and they were delicious.

That was back in the summer of 1999 and I have no idea if the factory is still there as I moved out of the area with Dominic many years ago now.

But if like me and starch disagrees with you, then making frozen baked potatoes in the air fryer is a fantastic plan B.

Today, the plan is to show you how easy it is to cook a frozen jacket potato in air fryer, or how you can increase the quantities and even do four at a time.

The frozen baked potato was something i was looking that could be done in an air fryer because i love them but it always took ages to cook, but with the frozen ones been half cooked already they did not take that long, these instructions were great and easy to follow!

  2. I’m confused. Your narrative says 5 to 8 minutes in the airfryer at 320°F but the actual recipe says 27 minutes. I sure would appreciate clarification. Thanks!

    • Hi Patricia,

Thank you for the question. For the 5 to 8 minutes we are referring to reheating the baked potatoes. The other time is the actual cooking time of frozen baked potato 🙂

    • I use these frozen baked potatos, and coon them in the microwave a minute or two shorter time indecated o. The pack then put them in the air fryer on 190c for a few minutes to crisp up the skins,

  3. Followed your instructions using the instant brands vortex air fryer and when it came out, the skin wasn’t crispy and I’m not entirely convinced it was cooked through so I threw it back in. Would it make a difference on the air fryer you used?

    • Hi Kerry,

Yes it could be, we have not tried the Instant Vortex yet but it is on our list. We used the Philips XL air fryer and use this one the most, we usually suggest to add between 2-5 minutes more depending on the size of the potatoes used, but the skin really should have been even a bit crispy by the end 😊

      • Hi I have the vortex and so far very pleased with it. Just trying jacket pot now, it’s crisping up nicely. Though I have hired the temp, as found it was taking forever, and I’m impatient, 😁 and I turned it half way.

Tried in a Ninja AF400 and it was still cold inside the bottom of the potatoes when I broke them open, so put them in for another 2 minutes at 200c.

    • I also felt this way, I had to turn it up and leave it in for another 10 minutes to get it cooked fully through. Pulled it out five minute before it was due to finish to add cheese and it was rock hard at the bottom. I also have the instant vortex mini

      • Hi Ciara,

Did you turn the potato half way through cooking? We have not used the Instant Pot vortex yet so not sure why this looks to be a problem but turning the potato over half way through might help 🙂

  4. Hi Sam,
Having read through you method for cooking a jacket potato, no where do you mention whether I should prick the potato with a folk prior to cooking?
Previously, if cooking using either a traditional oven or a microwave I have always found it necessary to prick the potato several times.
Also from reading the Q&A here, is it advisable to turn the potato (s) halfway through? Thank you 😊

    Reply
    • Hi Tom,

With the jackets been frozen on this recipe we are assuming that they have been pricked before freezing and also they have a cross in the top, you can turn halfway through if you like crispy skin all around your potatoes 🙂
