Potato Peel Crisps

We were recording new videos for you and were focusing on getting as many different recipes as possible out of one veggie box and one meat box.

We were really proud of all the delicious recipes we had achieved so far, but there we were with loads of potato peel left and as this was all about frugality, we just knew they had to be used to.

We wanted zero food waste!

That is when on a whim and for the first time ever we made air fryer potato peels and put those leftover bits of skin to good use.

We loved them so much and now our potato peelings have to compete with our instant pot veggie stock, for the best use of leftover potato skin.

Shop Local Air Fryer Challenge

We love shopping local and have a favourite greengrocer that we get weekly veggie boxes from and a local butcher that supplies a lot of the meat you see on Recipe This. We often find that the quality is much better, and the prices are similar too. We challenged ourselves to make as many meals as possible out of a veg box + meat box and share with you the results.

This air fryer recipe is one of those recipes and click here to view our air fryer shop local recipes.

Can You Make Crisps In An Air Fryer?

Yes, you can make air fryer crisps. BUT crisps always work well with either really thin slices of potatoes or using just the skin of the potato.

By following our method for potato peels, you have a much simpler method for air fryer crisps.

What Can You Do With Potato Peelings?

Like I have mentioned above, my number 1 favourite way with potato peelings is to make a delicious instant pot veggie stock from veggie scraps. I will make this when I have just prepared for a big meal, and we have loads of leftovers that need using up. You can check out our veggie peelings veggie stock here.

Though one of the best uses for potato peels, with everyone loving crispy food in the air fryer is potato peelings. They are like crisps and it will want you to keep every potato peeling you create and turn them into a delicious snack.

Why Put Potatoes In Cold Water Before Air Frying?

There is no need to put potatoes in cold water before air frying, unless and this is a BIG ONE, you have really low quality potatoes. I.e. they are really starchy or the potatoes you are using are out of season and you just know they will make rubbish air fryer chips or air fryer roast potatoes unless they get a bit of TLC.

In fact, if you put potatoes in cold water first, even after patting dry, are still damp and the oil doesn’t stick to them as well and they are never as crispy compared to potatoes that are not soaked before air frying.

Is It Healthy To Put Potato In Air Fryer?

Yes, it is healthy to put potatoes in the air fryer. This is because the air fryer uses considerably less oil compared to a deep fat fryer or butter used when roasting potatoes in the oven.

In fact, I am one of many that got an air fryer because I could then have potatoes for a fraction of the usual calories.

Potato Peel Air Fryer Ingredients

Peels – You can do a small portion or a large portion of potato peels. What I like to do is save up the potato peelings over a couple of meals and then make them in batches in the air fryer, because you don’t want to overcrowd them.

Oil – You will need a small quantity of oil to toss the potato peeling in, as this will help make them crispy and achieve the perfect air fryer crisps.

Seasoning – Then for seasoning your potato peels, it’s all about personal choice with how you would like your potato crisps to be seasoned. For example, if you would like them like salted crisps, then you can add plenty of salt and some pepper. Or if you wanted cajun you can add some cajun spice to the mix.

Can You Recommend An Air Fryer?

I often get asked which air fryers I recommend and which one I use. In 95% of our air fryer recipes, we use either the Philips Air Fryer XL or the Cosori XL because they are the best ones, we have found out of many air fryers we have tried over the years. You can click on the links above and read up on them. But if you would rather have a dual air fryer we recommend this Ninja Dual (make sure you order the right one as not all are good) or the Philips Dual.

How To Make Crisps In Air Fryer?

air-fryer-crispy-potato-peelings-step-by-step
  • Prep. Add your leftover potato peelings into a bowl and add to the bowl the seasonings and the extra virgin olive oil. Mix well with your hands for an even coating.
  • Cook. Then place the potato peels into the air fryer basket and air fry for 18 minutes at 180c/360f, shaking it halfway through for an even cook. Then follow this up with an extra 5 minutes at 200c/400f to make the potato peelings recipe crispier.

How Long To Air Fry Potato Peels?

We recommend 18 minutes to cook the potato peels in the air fryer, then increasing the temperature and then air frying the potato skins for another 5 minutes to make them really crispy.

Though you might feel after the cook time they are not quite crispy enough (some air fryers vary in cook times) then you can add on a few extra minutes.
