Fakeaway Kebab
My first introduction to the takeaway delivery service was the doner kebab. My mum would order one for the two of us, and they were so big we would share one, whilst my dad who hated kebabs would tuck into fried chicken and chips.
Then years later, I met and my in love with Dom and OMG he hated the doner kebab with a passion and always told me that it smelt like sweaty feet and was the worst of the worst of the lamb and other meats and to eat something better.
So over the next 10 plus years I barely touched a doner kebab and instead we had other takeaways and also made plenty of fakeaways at home.
I then tried a slow cooker doner kebab and we both fell in love with it. Forget cheap meat, this was made with minced lamb (ground lamb) from the butchers and was amazing.
Then whilst we were making our air fryer cookbook (you can find out more about it here) I suggested that as we have made an air fryer meatloaf before, we could easily take the same concept and convert our slow cooker recipe for doner kebab to the air fryer and make an air fryer doner kebab.
We did exactly that in the middle of testing recipes for the air fryer cookbook and this new fakeaway kebab recipe was born and its just so good that we have made it several times now.
Can You Cook Kebabs In An Air Fryer?
Yes, you can cook kebabs in the air fryer, and you will love them. There are so many different kebabs you can do in the air fryer and its not just about the lamb doner kebab.
Our favourite is using the air fryer oven and the air fryer chicken gyro, that was spectacular, or another lamb kebab favourite is the air fryer lamb koftas. Its just about getting a kebab that will fit your size of air fryer.
Can You Cook Doner Kebab In An Air Fryer?
Yes, you can cook a doner kebab in the air fryer and you will love this doner kebab lamb recipe.
It’s much quicker compared to a slow cooker recipe for doner kebab, and you can serve it with all your favourite doner kebab sides.
What Meat Is Doner Kebab?
If you’re wondering what’s in doner kebab meat, then note it is traditionally lamb mince, or as you might know it ground lamb.
Though I have also seen a doner kebab fakeaway made cheapter, by swapping the lamb for 50 percent lamb and 50% pork.
Whenever I have enjoyed kebabs in the Greek Isles it has always been made with pork mince, though had the same flavours that we associate with a doner kebab.
What About A Slimming World Kebab?
What is wonderful about a homemade lamb kebab is that due to its ingredients and the way that a kebab is cooked in the air fryer, is that it is perfect for slimming world or weight watchers.
For example, the only ingredient that you can’t have unlimited of on Slimming World in the doner meat recipe is the pitta breads. Apart from this you have a low fat mince recipe that is well seasoned along with salad items and a small yoghurt dip.
I am sure this is also why, I originally heard of air fryers in the Slimming World magazine many, many years ago.
Can You Cook Mince In Air Fryer?
Yes, you can cook mince in the air fryer and there are so many different ways of doing so.
The simple method is to make our air fryer ground beef recipe and then you can use that as a base for Bolognese, taco meat or any other favourite.
But you can also make air fryer hamburgers, air fryer meatballs, and so many other great meals with mince.
Doner Kebab Ingredients
Mince – We recommend about 900g which is 2lbs of minced lamb. This is a good quantity to be able to feed at least 2 of you for your doner kebab fakeaway, but of course, if you are not a big eater you then have leftover takeaway supplies for the next day.
Seasoning – Then for seasoning of your homemade doner kebab recipe it’s a mix of oregano, mixed herbs, cumin, sweet paprika, garlic and onion powder and cayenne pepper. Plus, a generous seasoning of salt and pepper.
Extras – When making a lamb doner kebab I love to have all the salad items that you usually get with your takeaway. You can do the same or just serve your homemade doner meat in some warm pitta breads. For salad items you can add some lettuce or red cabbage, onion, tomatoes, cucumber and of course lets not forget about the garlic yoghurt.
Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this fakeaway doner kebab in air fryer recipe it has been our Instant Vortex Air Fryer. We recommend this one and its wonderful for many types of air fryer recipes.
Plus, we recommend you head over to our air fryer recipes category as we have more than 500 tried and tested air fryer recipes and have been air frying for 10 years.
How To Air Fry Kebab Meat?
- Mix. Start by adding all your kebab meat ingredients into a large bowl and mixing well with your hands. You don’t want to get a overpowering seasoned piece and then another that is bland.
- Loaf. Then place a layer of foil onto your kitchen worktop and then make the kebab meat into a loaf shape similar to making a meatloaf. Then wrap the doner kebab meat tightly in the foil.
- Cook. Then place the tightly wrapped doner meat into the air fryer and air fry for 25 minutes at 160c/320f, then open the top of the foil so that the meat is exposed and then air fry for a further 20 minutes at 180c/360f or until crispy to on top to your liking.
And I am sure you can see now why people like air fryer kebabs.
Fakeaway Kebab Salad
Now that I have introduced you to a recipe for doner meat lets talk about the fakeaway kebab salad.
I am not one for going to specifically for ingredients just to make a fakeaway salad. So, I went with ingredients I had in.
With this air fryer fakeaway I used:
- Cucumbers – sliced into quarters
- Cherry Tomatoes – I kept them whole
- Red Cabbage – these were leftovers in our fridge
- Onion – I just peeled and sliced them
Then for the traditional sauces I had one little bowl with aioli in it as the main sauce you get when you buy a doner kebab is garlic mayonnaise. Then I also added some garlic puree and parsley to some yoghurt for another sauce bowl.
How Long Does Doner Meat Take To Cook?
This homemade doner kebab air fryer recipe takes JUST 45 minutes to cook. Then whilst you are waiting on the air fryer you can put your feet up or make the salad that you plan to serve with your doner meat.
Doner Kebab In Ninja Foodi
This can also be a Ninja doner kebab recipe. Simply use the air fryer function of your Ninja Foodi and then follow this recipe.
Or you can follow our ninja foodi meatloaf recipe and then swap the ingredients and then you have the time and temp of the ninja to refer to.

Your suuggested times for the lower amount of meat were spot on, I made this using MISTER MARINADE Fakeaway Night In Doner Kebab Seasoning Spice Mix that I bought from Amazon and cooked it using your method, the flavour was superb indistinguishable from the takeaway one.
How long would you cook it for I using 500g of mince?
Hi Rob,
Try 18 minutes and then after you have opened it do 15 minutes and see what the temperatures are, but they should be fine 🙂
A perfect donor kebab recipe. I was so sceptical that this was going to be a rubbish imitation but i was so surprised and so was my hubby when i did it for a Saturday night. It was easy to do and tasted just like a kebab shop one, many thanks.
