Air Fryer Gammon Steak
Growing up as a kid in the North of England, gammon steak was often on the menu, it was cheap, it was easy to cook, and you could just throw it into the frying pan.
Or you would visit a greasy spoon (what we called a café that served a lot of food that would give you cholesterol problems) and have gammon, egg, and chips.
It always felt a staple that feels so nostalgic and yet here I am showing you how to convert it to the air fryer for the modern cook.
But what is different between now and your grandad cooking it for you in the 80’s/90’s is that you don’t need a frying pan, then another for the fried eggs and a third for the chips. Instead, one air fryer can do all this for you.
Last week we showed you how to combine steak and chips in our air fryer steak and chips recipe and this is another example of doing the combination, but of course gammon is a much cheaper option for you.
We also have a fantastic steak section in our first air fryer cookbook (the complete air fryer cookbook). It gives you time and temps for various steak recipes and shares even more tips for cooking meat in air fryer.
Is Air Fryer Gammon Steak Really Ham Steak?
I love the cute little foodie differences between the UK and the USA and one of them is that we say gammon and they say ham. We only ever use ham in its cooked state and not raw.
So, if you are looking instead for air fryer ham steak, you have come to the right place as whether you would say ham steak in air fryer or gammon steak in air fryer, they are one of the same.
The only difference is how you would choose to serve it. But I highly recommend the British way with chips and a fried egg.
Can You Cook Gammon Steaks In An Air Fryer?
Yes, you can cook gammon steak in air fryer and you will love it! Whether you call it gammon steaks in air fryer or ham steaks in air fryer, its simply the best.
You can load single gammon steaks into the air fryer basket, or a drawer if you have a dual air fryer, and then a few minutes later your gammon steaks are cooked.
Because they are so fast we like to use them as a quick sandwich.
Best Way To Cook Gammon Steaks In Air Fryer?
The best way to cook gammon steaks in the air fryer, is to spread them out, so that there is not much of an overlay. This will air fry them better and help get a crisp at the edges.
Thin Gammon Steak In Air Fryer
The gammon that we used in the air fryer, we would call it thin gammon steaks. I find I have to be careful when removing them from the packaging in case they break.
If you have a thicker cut of gammon or ham, then add a couple of extra minutes to the cooking time.
Gammon Steak In Ninja Air Fryer
However, if you have a Ninja Air Fryer (such as this Ninja Dual we have) you can cook the gammon steaks in one drawer and then the chips in the other. The gammon steak in ninja dual air fryer is my favourite method and then as the gammon rests you can be frying the eggs, or why not serve it with pineapple?
Ninja Foodi Air Fryer Gammon Steak
Or if you have a Ninja Foodi, you can use the air fryer basket that comes with it. But if you want to make gammon and chips, I recommend starting the chips first and then placing the gammon over the chips to cook everything together.
Gammon Steaks In Tower Air Fryer
Or if you have a Tower, you can also do Tower air fryer gammon steaks. Either using their oven, basket, or dual types. But note with the Tower air fryers, they are a little slower so need a higher temperature. So if you would normally cook at 180c/360f then you will need to increase it to 200c/400f for the same results.
Gammon Steaks Air Fryer Ingredients
Steak – We used 2 225g/8oz gammon steaks (ham steaks if you are in the US). They were also thin cut, so adjust if you have a thicker steak you want to air fry.
Potatoes – For the best gammon and chips in air fryer we recommend that you prepare the chips first and then give them a partial cook. This is because the potatoes have a longer cooking time on them compared to the steak. Or if you are using the Ninja Dual (or similar) you can sync the air fryer so that both are ready together.
Oil. Whilst gammon doesn’t require any oil the chips do. We recommend a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil.
Seasoning. Then for seasoning your gammon and chips, lets start with your steak. We recommend just black pepper as its naturally salty and doesn’t need more than this. For the chips we added salt, pepper, and dried parsley.
Eggs or Pineapple. Of course, the traditional British way is with fried eggs or pineapple, or maybe you have one of each? We followed the fried egg from our first air fryer cookbook (get the complete air fryer cookbook here) and its so easy.
Can You Recommend An Air Fryer?
I often get asked which air fryers I recommend and which one I use. In 95% of our air fryer recipes, we use either the Philips Air Fryer XL or the Cosori XL because they are the best ones, we have found out of many air fryers we have tried over the years. You can click on the links above and read up on them. But if you would rather have a dual air fryer we recommend this Ninja Dual (make sure you order the right one as not all are good) or the Philips Dual.
How To Cook Gammon Steaks In Air Fryer?
- Prep. Place the gammon steaks (overlapping if needed) into your air fryer basket and sprinkle with black pepper.
- Cook. Air fry the gammon steak for 8 minutes at 180c/360f or until crispy to your liking and then serve.
Now that is how to cook some quick gammon steaks in the air fryer, but of course if you want chips and a fried egg, that is how to vary this recipe.
Gammon Steaks In Air Fryer With Chips
We find to make it a meal, the easiest way is using the Ninja Dual, but if you have a basket, you can partly cook the chips and then cook the gammon over the chips.
- Prep. Start by prepping the chips. Peel and slice the potatoes into chips, then add them to a bowl with olive oil and seasoning and mix well with your hands. Tip them into your air fryer drawer.
- Unpack. Carefully unpack the gammon from its packaging and place in the other drawer. If the gammon steaks are quite big, you can overlap and then swap them around halfway through cooking.
- Sync. Sync the air fryer drawers. Set the gammon to 8 minutes at 180c/360f and then the chips to 23 minutes at the same temperature.
- Shake. Just before the gammon starts in the 2nd drawer, shake the chips for an even cook.
Now that is how easy it is cooking gammon steaks in air fryer with some chips.
Love gammon, then you will also love: air fryer gammon dinner, slow cooker gammon in coke, slow cooker gammon in water, slow cooker gammon in fanta, slow cooker gammon steaks or why not try slow cooker gammon shanks.
How Long To Cook Gammon Steaks In Air Fryer?
The cooking time for gammon steaks in the air fryer is 8 minutes, but that is without the chips.
If you would like air fryer gammon and chips then you would need an extra 15 minutes for the chips, which is well worth it.
What temperature should gammon be when cooked in air fryer? We recommend cooking the air fryer gammon at 180c/360f.

Sam & Doms Top Tips For Success
We recommend that you use the sync button of your Ninja Dual if you have a dual. It makes it so much easier and then both the gammon and chips are ready at the same time.

How long to cook if they not frozen?
Hi Robert,
If the steaks are not frozen and the same size as ours were I would go with 12 minutes 6 on each side 🙂
The recipe says cook for 10mins from frozen so why is it 12 mins if not frozen!
Hi Marion,
This is because we assume he is cooking just the ham steaks in a cold air fryer, ours is hot as it has just cooked some chips and this takes alot of the time off. Also his steaks could have been so much bigger than ours so we had to generalise with the cooking times 🙂
I love my gammon with pineapple. So good and thanks so much for showing me how to make it in the air fryer.
Thanks Samantha for showing me another way to cook my favourite frozen meat in the air fryer. Love your recipes and thanks for everything you do.
Love gammon steaks, but just wish they would not shrink as much. Going to try these in the air fryer for sure.
