Air Fryer Ham Steak
Growing up in England I always remember the love for the cheap quick dinner of gammon steak, egg, and chips.
I never had it often, but when I did, it always felt like that amazing comfort food meal that you must eat more often.
You either had your gammon steak and chips with a fried egg or with a slice of pineapple. You were either the fried egg fan or the pineapple fan. Or if you were greedy you had both.
I would always choose the fried egg because I could dunk the chips in the yolk.
Fast forward about 25 years and I was wandering around my local Iceland supermarket here in Portugal and saw gammon steaks in the meat section.
I am sure I have not had one since the 1990’s and said to Dominic that they would be amazing cooked in the air fryer.
Saved them in the freezer and planned to cook them soon.
You are probably reading this, thinking what on earth has gammon, egg and chips got to do with you cooking ham steak in the air fryer and when I am going to talk about ham steak?
Well Gammon is to the Brits what ham steak is to the Americans. As Brits we never call it ham as our gammon is a cured version of ham that is a little salty.
Whenever us Brits see an American ham recipe, we will buy gammon, just like in our slow cooker gammon in coke recipe.
If you scroll down, you will see that our photos of gammon steak are very similar to what you would consider ham steak to be.
Us Brits would also serve our gammon with chips aka what you might call air fryer steak fries. Then out comes sliced pineapple from a can or the trusted fried egg.
Think of something that most working-class Americans would eat every week in the 1990’s and you will see why Brits still get excited for a bit of nostalgia with the gammon and chips obsession.

Ham Steak In Air Fryer
What I hate most about the ham or gammon here in Portugal is that the season is always limited. You can get a large gammon at Iceland during Christmas and then the rest of the time, they only have the smaller versions and it is at a much higher price tag.
But getting ham steak to cook in the air fryer is available all year and is a perfect throw it in the air fryer alternative for the rest of the year.
If you have not had ham steaks before, then think of them as a boneless ham steak. It has also been referred to as spiral sliced ham or fried ham slices.
Cooking Frozen Ham Steak
I mentioned above that I loaded the gammon steaks into the freezer. Well what I wanted to do today is show you how to cook your gammon or ham from frozen in the air fryer.
But apart from convenience there is another reason for cooking frozen ham steak. The cooking time is longer with frozen ham steak and it makes the cooking process easier.
Simply remove the packaging and cook your frozen ham steak in the air fryer over your fries.
How To Air Fry Ham Steak?
Cooking ham steak in air fryer is EASY:
- Prep your fries and load them into the air fryer basket.
- Cook for 10 minutes.
- Place frozen ham steak over the fries.
- Cook for a further 10 minutes.
- While the frozen ham steaks cook fry your eggs or get your tinned pineapple out ready.
- Load up your dinner plates and serve.
Or if like us you would like to just cook air fryer ham steak, cook it for 10 minutes in the air fryer instead of 20 minutes, just like the photos below:

Gammon & Chips

Because I want to recreate the delicious meal of British gammon and chips. I am cooking both the ham steak and the air fryer fries at the same time.
What is amazing about this, is that the juices from the gammon drips onto the chips and it is the most flavoursome air fryer chips that you will ever try.
The fries cook first for 10 minutes in the air fryer basket, the gammon is added on top and that is when the magic happens.

Thanks Samantha for showing me another way to cook my favourite frozen meat in the air fryer. Love your recipes and thanks for everything you do.
I love my gammon with pineapple. So good and thanks so much for showing me how to make it in the air fryer.
How long to cook if they not frozen?
Hi Robert,
If the steaks are not frozen and the same size as ours were I would go with 12 minutes 6 on each side 🙂
The recipe says cook for 10mins from frozen so why is it 12 mins if not frozen!
Hi Marion,
This is because we assume he is cooking just the ham steaks in a cold air fryer, ours is hot as it has just cooked some chips and this takes alot of the time off. Also his steaks could have been so much bigger than ours so we had to generalise with the cooking times 🙂
