Cheese Chips In Air Fryer

I love cooking chips in the air fryer, and like many it was the reason why I bought an air fryer, all those years ago.

We have shown you how to cook air fryer chips, air fryer salt and pepper chips, but the best of them all is of course, cheesy chips. There is just something about the way the cheese melts over the chips in the air fryer and how delicious chips are in the air fryer when reheated.

You can make your chips first and then finish with reheating them with some cheese, or like we often do, use up our leftover chips.

Or instead of cheesy chips why not make air fryer loaded fries and add a few of your leftovers over the chips?

Why Don’t My Chips Go Crispy In The Air Fryer?

The reason your chips have not gone crispy in the air fryer is because of one of three reasons.

You have not cooked them for long enough. Just a couple of extra minutes can make such a difference.

You have not cooked them at the right temperature. They need to start off lower and then be increased to get the crisp on them and to stop them from drying out.

Then finally, not adding enough oil. The less oil you add the harder it is for them to get crispy. We find that 1tbsp of extra virgin olive oil is spot on!

Is It OK To Put Cheese In An Air Fryer?

Yes, you can put cheese in the air fryer, and you will love cooking with cheese in the air fryer.

My top air fryer cheesy recipes include air fryer zucchini pizza slices, air fryer grilled cheese, or the British equivalent of air fryer cheese and ham toasties.

Why Does Cheese Fly Around In Air Fryer?

Cheese flies around in the air fryer, because of the way an air fryer works. You see the air fryer is all about blowing around hot air and if you put something light into the air fryer, such as cheese, or air fryer popcorn then you can have the food flying about.

How Do You Keep Cheese From Blowing Off In An Air Fryer?

The secret to stopping cheese blowing about in the air fryer is to find a way to hold it down or add something to hold it down.

In our air fryer zucchini pizza slices for example we push the cheese down onto cream cheese and this stops them moving about.

Or with our air fryer cheese quesadillas we use cocktail sticks to hold it in place.

You can also change the recipe slightly too. For example, instead of making cheese on toast you can opt for cheese toasties, as then the cheese is sandwiched between the bread and cant fly off.

How To Melt Cheese In Air Fryer?

I have had feedback from some air fryer users complaining that the cheese is not melting in the air fryer.

The number #1 reason for cheese not melting in the air fryer is using low fat cheese, because its not as good at melting.

Use regular cheddar cheese, mozzarella, or something similar and you will have perfect melted cheese on your cheese fries in the air fryer.

Cheesy Chips Air Fryer Ingredients

Cheesy Chips Air Fryer Ingredients

Chips – We had some air fryer chips we had already made, and they reheat in the air fryer with the cheese, so it doesn’t matter if they are cold. You could also use chips from your takeaway the night before.

Cheese – No surprise with this ingredient! As much cheese as would create a good layer over your chips so that you can no longer se the chips. You can use mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese or another favourite cheese that melts well. We used a mixture of cheddar cheese and mozzarella.

Onions – The secret ingredient for making the best cheesy chips in air fryer is the onion. A little chopped spring onion makes all the difference and gives it a lovely crunch and extra flavour.

  • Slice. Start by slicing your spring onion and if you need to grate your cheese to get it grated so that your prep is done.
  • Layer. Next add your leftover chips to your silicone baking pan, followed by grated cheese, spring onion and a final layer of grated cheese.
  • Cook. Then place the silicone pan into the air fryer basket and air fry for 5 minutes at 180c/360f or until the cheese is nicely melted.

Can You Recommend An Air Fryer?

I often get asked which air fryers I recommend and which one I use. In 95% of our air fryer recipes, we use either the Philips Air Fryer XL or the Cosori XL because they are the best ones, we have found out of many air fryers we have tried over the years. You can click on the links above and read up on them.

Plus, we recommend you head over to our air fryer recipes category as we have more than 500 tried and tested everyday air fryer recipes and have been air frying for 10+ years.

Get Some Silicone Cake Pans

We bought some round red silicone cake pans and they have been a life saver. Similar to these ones here.

They are one of those amazing air fryer accessories that you must own, and you can do so much with. They are ideal because when you have cooked the food, you simply peel away the silicone so no scrubbing to do or lining with parchment paper.

You can also get them for different air fryer sizes such as 6 inch, 7 inch or 8 inch.

I use them all the time and have used them to melt chocolate in (yes really), air fryer frittata, air fryer banana bread, air fryer lemon drizzle cake, air fryer brownies and so much more.
