Air Fryer Toastie
An air fryer toastie, or a grilled sandwich as you might call it, is a total game changer cooked in the air fryer.
I grew up with those cute toastie machines and apart from chips it was my ultimate comfort food.
Whilst my mum and dad were out and I was making my own lunch I would add a couple of slices of buttered bread into the toastie machine, add loads of cheese and usually some onion and sliced tomato too, add another layer of buttered bread and let the toastie machine do the hard work.
A few minutes later, you had perfect toasties that were even better with some mayonnaise or salad cream to dunk into them.
Fast forward to 2023 and I don’t know anyone that owns a toastie machine, instead the talk is all about an air fryer toastie.
It’s a very similar way to make an air fryer toastie as it is a traditional toastie. The only difference is instead of loading into a toastie machine, you are adding it to the air fryer.
It tastes just as good and just like a toastie maker, you can mix and match ingredients and make yourself the perfect toastie.
What Is A Toastie?
In the UK we have our toastie machine, which is a sandwich maker, that makes the best toasted sandwich.
Like the US love for the panini, they both make amazing warm sandwiches.
Can You Make A Toastie In An Air Fryer?
Yes, you can make a toastie in the air fryer and you will love it. We have not owned a toastie machine (or any similar gadgets) for many, many years now and find that using the air fryer is the perfect alternative.
You can also make many types of warm sandwiches in the air fryer, and its not just limited to a simple cheese toastie.
What About A Cheese & Ham Toastie?
Cheese and ham toasties in the air fryer, is another favourite of ours. We call it the odds and ends type of toastie as you can use up what you have leftover in your fridge.
For example, this air fryer ham and cheese toastie is perfect for the day after the roast dinner for using up your leftover gammon. Then if you have a few different cheeses in the fridge that need using up you can add those. Which for us, meant using up a couple of open grated cheese bags.
Can You Toast Bread In An Air Fryer?
Yes, you can toast bread in the air fryer and its so easy and just as delicious as it is if done in the toaster.
So, like with the toastie machine, once you own an air fryer you can get rid of both the toastie machine and the toaster.
You can do air fryer toast for breakfast to have with a little butter, do air fryer crumpets, or even air fryer frozen bagels.
Can I Wrap A Sandwich In Foil In An Air Fryer?
Yes, you can wrap a sandwich in foil in an air fryer, but it doesn’t mean that you should.
You see, foil in the air fryer is no problem. BUT it can slow down the cooking time by a lot, so often it’s not worth doing.
Ham And Cheese Toastie Air Fryer Ingredients
Leftovers – We used two open bags of grated cheese to give us a two cheese toastie. Then we used sliced gammon from our air fryer gammon joint from the day before.
Bread – Then for the bread, I recommend anything that toasts well in the air fryer. I don’t recommend sour dough as this doesn’t toast very well and might disappoint you on the doneness and go with something else such as typical white sliced bread.
Spreading – Then for spreading onto the bread, I prefer some butter or margarine. Though I know some people love to use mayonnaise instead.

How To Make Ham And Cheese Toastie In Air Fryer?
- Spread. Start by spreading a layer of butter over your bread. Then place two of the slices butter side down into the air fryer basket.
- Load. Next add your toppings to the bread. We had a layer of leftover gammon and lots of grated cheese. Then add the second layer of bread, butter side up.
- Cook. Then cook the air fryer toasted sandwich for 7 minutes at 200c/400f, flip with tongs then the same again for a further 5 minutes before serving.
How Long Does A Toastie Take?
I can’t remember how long a toastie took in the toastie machine, because it was such a long time ago, that I last used one.
But I can say that a toastie in the air fryer takes JUST 12 minutes. This includes flipping it over, so that you have a perfect golden crispy coating on both sides.

Cheese And Ham Toastie In Air Fryer
Ingredients
- 4 Slices Gammon
- 28 g Grated Mozzarella Cheese
- 28 g Grated Cheddar Cheese
- 4 Slices White Bread
- Butter for spreading

Instructions
- Spread the bread with butter or margarine and then place two of the slices, side by side, butter side down in the air fryer basket.
- Cover the bread with leftover ham or gammon.
- Then sprinkle the top of the gammon with a mix of grated cheeses.
- Then add the other slices of bread, butter side up.
- Air fry for 7 minutes at 200c/400f until golden then turn with tongs and do the same temperature again for another 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
