Recipe For Pork Stew

I had two main requests for a recipe for pork stew. One asked for pork stew with cider, another asked for pork stew with apples.

I decided for some yummy fun and experimenting to combine the two.

Pork and apples go together so perfectly, so I cleared out the fruit bowl of the apples I had, that the kids asked for, but never used.

Pork in cider is also spectacular and is like other slow cooker meats you can make and add a can of this and that to and gives it the wow factor. I was at a food show and these delicious cans of honey cider were being sold and were the perfect way of bringing cider into your recipe for pork stew.

But this is what I love about our slow cooker pork stew, it bringing together the ingredients I have in, keeping the costs down as you are using up what you have and pork stew is so much cheaper than making our Ninja Foodi Beef Stew.

Have a look at what you have in, and what ingredients you need and then lets make a delicious slow cooker pork stew together.

Can You Cook Pork In A Ninja?

Yes, you can cook pork in the Ninja and there are a few different ways that you can do it. We love Ninja Foodi Pulled Pork, we love to make our air fryer pork roast dinner in the Ninja, plus we love the slow cooker function for leftover pork curry.

What we are showing you today is a slow cooker pork stew but we are using the Ninja Foodi slow cooker function to make the recipe.

What Is The Best Cut Of Pork For Stew?

The best cut of pork for stew is a medium fat piece of pork. Too fatty pork will result in an overly fatty stew, whilst a lean piece of pork is best suited to our air fryer pork steak recipe.

We recommend pork shoulder for pork stew the most, or something similar or pork that is cubed up ready to become a stew.

Can You Cook Raw Pork In A Slow Cooker?

Yes, you can cook raw pork in a slow cooker and it’s something that I have been doing for years and years. Its so easy and its like many slow cooker meat recipes where you can dump the ingredients into the slow cooker and then let the slow cooker work its magic.

Though we don’t recommend frozen pork being cooked in the slow cooker, thaw it first.

Do You Brown Pork Before Slow Cooker?

There is mixed opinion as to whether you brown pork before slow cooking. I prefer to and its nice to get the flavours started in the slow cooker, but if you have a slow cooker without a sauté setting, then you can skip this step.

Do I Need To Put Water In Slow Cooker With Pork?

You don’t need to add water to the slow cooker with pork. This is only done when you make slow cooker gammon in water, because the gammon is rather salty, and it gets rid of the salty flavour.

If you are making a stew in the slow cooker, you do need stock, but if its just a slow cooker pork leg joint for example, no water is required as it creates its own juices from the fat of the meat.

Pork Stew Slow Cooker Ingredients

Pork Stew Slow Cooker Ingredients

Pork – For the pork we used a pack of already diced pork stew meat and it works out at about 1lb of pork or 450g.

Apples – In this pork and apple recipe we used some apples from our fruit bowl. You don’t need to be buying specific apples, just ones that you can peel and slice and load into the slow cooker with the pork.

Cider – Then for the cider we had some honey cider in our kitchen cupboard that we hadn’t used, and it was just perfect for pork in cider. You can of course, use any cider, or even apple juice you have in.

Veggies – If you have more mouths to feed than us and want to stretch out the meal, you can do this by adding more veggies than we have. We used an onion and 4 carrots.

Flavours – Now lets talk about flavouring up your pork and apple slow cooker recipe. I recommend some mustard (pork and mustard are a perfect pairing), then whatever stock you have and I also usually use some mashed potatoes to thicken the pork stew recipe.

Can You Recommend A Ninja Foodi?

I often get asked which kitchen gadgets I recommend and which one I use. For the Ninja Foodi we have this one. It doesn’t have as many bells and whistles compared to some of the newer models, but it does a great job.

We can dehydrate, air fry, pressure cook, sauté, slow cook, make yoghurt and so much more.

Plus, we recommend you head over to our ninja foodi recipes category as we have been using the Ninja Foodi since 2020 and just love it for simplicity, how delicious the recipes are when cooked in it and how much time it saves us in the kitchen. We even take the Ninja Foodi on holiday with us.

How To Slow Cook Pork & Apple Stew?

  • Sauté. To start your pork stew in the slow cooker we recommend sauteing your onion first with some extra virgin olive oil, then adding in sliced apples, followed by the pork. This will flavour your slow cooker pot perfectly, before adding in your other ingredients.
  • Stir. Next add in everything else apart from the frozen peas and give it a good stir.
  • Cook. Next place the lid down on your slow cooker and slow cook the pork stew for 4 hours on high or 7 hours on low.
  • Stir. Then stir in frozen peas and as you stir the frozen peas will warm through from the heat of the slow cooked pork stew recipe.
  • Serve. Finally, serve this simple pork stew recipe with mashed potatoes or with dumplings or why not a warm crusty bread roll?

Pork And Sweet Potato Stew

I’m calling this a pork and sweet potato stew because I was making instant pot sweet potato mash yesterday on the blog, and felt like the sweet potato mash was the perfect combo of the pork stew.

If you are looking for the perfect serving suggestion for your recipe for pork stew then this sweet potato mash is it!

Or if sweet potato mash is not your thing here are a few other pork stew serving suggestions:

Make Stew Pumpkin Bowls

Have you ever wanted to make stew pumpkin bowls? Because you can do it with your pork stew, or any stew or soup recipe.

Simply make the pork stew first and then as its cooling follow our instant pot whole pumpkin recipe. The instant pot pumpkin takes 17 minutes and then once done scrape out the excess seeds, add your pork stew and then serve.

Here is one of our pumpkin bowls ready for eating and such fun and even better served with our air fryer pull apart bread rolls.

Notes

Apples. We used some spare apples from our fruit bowl. You can do the same or any will do just avoid cooking apples that you would use in an apple pie as they can be too bitter for a savoury apple recipe.
Mash. We freeze leftover mash in ice cubes and then use it to thicken our stews. You can do the same or just add in some of the mash that you plan to serve with your pork stew.
Stock. We also do similar with the stock and make instant pot beef stock, then do the same for other meats and freeze the stock. You can do the same or use an OXO cube.
