My Love For Air Fryer Steak

If you have been here a while, then I am sure you have come across many of our air fryer steak recipes and my love affair with steak in the air fryer.

When we lived in Portugal, they had a thin cut steak that was delicious, so we started cooking steak and chips together in the air fryer.

This then expanded into air fryer sirloin steak, air fryer rump steak, air fryer ribeye steak and our full guide of how to cook steak in the air fryer.

But one steak I just haven’t got around to sharing with you is air fryer t bone steak and today is the day you have been waiting for!

Air Fry T Bone Steak

I asked the butchers for a couple of large t bone steaks that I could cook in the air fryer.

It was among a bulk order of meats that I had purchased ready for recipes over the coming months. I opened the t bone steaks and OMG they were HUGE I think they could feed two people just from one of them and seemed to take me and Dominic forever to finish them.

So lets call this a thick t bone steak in the air fryer or if you were measuring it, 1 inch t bone in the air fryer!

What Is A Tbone Steak?

If you have not enjoyed a tbone steak yet, then note that a t bone steak is steak cut from the sirloin. Also known as a steak with a bone in the middle.

Because its cut from the middle with steak taken from each side it ends up with a bone down the centre of the steak. As the bone from the centre is shaped like a T this steak has become known as the t bone steak.

What Two Steaks Are In A T Bone?

The two steaks that make up a t bone is the fillet steak and the sirloin steak. Many consider the sirloin steak and the fillet steak to be the two best, thus giving you an AMAZING steak cut.

However, if you live across the pond in the USA, you might refer to these as the filet mignon and the short loin.

Is T Bone Steak Good?

This tbone steak recipe is AMAZING. I never thought anything would beat air fryer ribeye steak, but OMG this is the best of the best.

But of course, tbone steak is not cheap and you will pay a premium for such an amazing steak in the air fryer.

Can You Cook T Bone Steak In Air Fryer?

Yes, t bone steak can be cooked in the air fryer, and you will LOVE IT! T bone is so easy to prep and then you can let the air fryer do the hard work.

One fear for many, is cooking steak in a pan and it spitting on you, or you overcooking it. Yet its much easier to air fry tbone.

What Is The Best Cooking Method For T Bone?

The best way to cook a tbone steak is in the air fryer. It creates a delicious grill like texture to the steak, its faster cooking than the grill or barbecue and tastes amazing.

You can also leave the tbone steak in the air fryer to cook whilst you sort out your sides.

How To Prepare T Bone Steak?

There is not much effort, when it comes to preparing t bone steak for the air fryer, and this also applies to pretty much every air fryer steak recipe.

The most important part is to make sure the steak is at room temperature, because it will help make tbones tender.

The next step is to plan your t bone steak seasoning. I like to keep it simple, because you want to taste the amazing flavours of the tbone, and don’t want the flavours from seasoning to take over from this. I recommend some light seasoning such as salt, pepper, and a pinch of your favourite dried seasoning.

Then once you have brought your tbone steak to room temperature and seasoned, all the prep is done, and you are ready for air frying.

T Bone Steak Air Fryer Ingredients

t-bone ingredients

Steak – I recommend a medium t bone steak to cook in the air fryer. Ours that we got from the butchers was HUGE and only just fitted in the air fryer. It was 825g or 29oz. Of course, you can go much smaller than this!

Seasoning – Then for seasoning do keep it simple as you want to enjoy the natural flavour of the steak. We love cooking t bone steak with salt, and pepper. You can also add one of your favourite dried herbs too and sprinkle it over. But married to a chef, they will always tell you steak only needs salt and pepper!

Can You Recommend An Air Fryer?

I often get asked which air fryers I recommend and which one I use. In 95% of our air fryer recipes, we use either the Philips Air Fryer XL or the Cosori XL because they are the best ones, we have found out of many air fryers we have tried over the years. You can click on the links above and read up on them.

But if you would rather have a dual air fryer we recommend this Ninja Dual (make sure you order the right one as not all are good) or the Philips Dual.

How To Cook T Bone Steak In Air Fryer?

  • Season. Start by seasoning your steak ready for the air fryer. We recommend a good sprinkling of sea salt and black pepper. You can also add another seasoning of choice such as dried steak seasoning, smoked paprika or some garlic powder.
  • Cook. Load the t bone into the air fryer. For an average air fryer size it will take up the whole basket! Then start cooking t bone steak in air fryer. We recommend 18 minutes at 180c/360f.
  • Turn. As the air fryer hits the halfway cook time, turn the steak over with tongs and then re-season on the other side before carrying on with the final cook time.

And I am sure you can see now how easy it is cooking t bone steak in air fryer and why you should be doing it too!

How Long To Cook T Bone Steak In Air Fryer?

The recommended cooking time for t bone steak is JUST 18 minutes. Note that is for a large t bone steak in air fryer and you might want to adjust for smaller t bone.

When cooking an air fryer tbone steak (the same applies to every air fryer steak) is to make sure you turn the steak and that both sides are getting cooked.

For even better results aim for equal cook times on each side.

Therefore, if a steak takes 18 minutes, then do 9 minutes on each side.

For the t bone internal temp aim for 55c/130f as this will give you a medium rare.

T bone steak in air fryer to medium rare – this is how we like our air fryer steak the most, so the steak recipes on Recipe This are to this.

T bone steak in air fryer medium well – to achieve a medium well air fried t bone steak we recommend adding 2 minutes on each side.

T bone steak in air fryer well done – Or if going well done with your t bone steaks opt for an extra 4 minutes each side on the original recipe time.

What Temperature Should Steak Be In An Air Fryer?

The great chefs will tell you that you should always cook a steak at a medium temperature, otherwise it will be tough, and overcooked. The same rule applies to the air fryer.

The air fryer medium temperature for steak is 180c/360f and you will notice this across a lot of our air fryer steak recipes.

Why is steak tough in air fryer? This is because you either have not followed the rule above of a medium temperature or the steak you are cooking is too tough for the air fryer. Another issue is if you have preheated the air fryer, as it doesn’t need it with steak and will overcook your t bone.

Sam & Doms Top Tips For Success

We find that air fryer steak is cooked the exact same way regardless of whether or not it is t bone, fillet, sirloin, or another type of steak. Its also much easier compared to cooking in the pan. Master it for one steak recipe and you have them all!

Another important tip You can also cook air fryer frozen steak and its so juicy and moist thanks to a change in temperature and cooking it slow for longer.

Please note This t bone steak air fryer recipe was tested in our Philips Air Fryer XL air fryer (its this one). Air fryers vary so adjust if necessary, depending on the quality of your air fryer. Or consult the temperature test on page 18 of The Complete Air Fryer Cookbook.
Turn. It’s important that you do an equal cook on each time. Otherwise your tbone wont be as tender.
Seasoning. Avoid over seasoning your steak otherwise you will lose the amazing natural flavour of the t bone.
Temp. Avoid cooking the steak at a higher temperature otherwise it will dry out and will need much longer to cook in the middle.
