Air Fryer Rump Steak
Earlier in the month we showed you how easy it is to cook an air fryer rump roast. That was loaded with carrots, parsnips, and roast potatoes. It was delicious and a total air fryer game changer.

We often get asked about cooking different steak cuts in the air fryer and the questions surrounding them. We went shopping bought a few different steaks and air fried them for you.
Because rump steak often has a bad press for being one of the cheaper steaks, we thought we would start with air fryer rump steak and see what it was like.
What Is Rump Steak?
I often get asked what rump steak is and I wrongly assumed that everybody knew all about rump steak and that it didn’t need an introduction, but it seems it does.
That is because rump steak is called different things around the world.
While us Brits and our friends in Australia have it on a regular basis in the United States it is referred to as sirloin steak.
Yet to confuse things further, what us Brits would call sirloin steak is referred to as short loin or porterhouse in the US.
Rump Steak Vs Ribeye
Rump steak is not the same as a ribeye. In fact, if you check out the photos from our air fryer ribeye steak recipe you will see that ribeye is a flatter cut of steak and much more tender.
Not that rump steak is awful or anything. But if you were to name the steaks in a list of most tender and most delicious first, ribeye would come above rump.
Is Rump Steak Tender?
It can be. But you need to cook rump steak at a medium heat, as get it too hot and you will lose the tenderness.
You can also transform rump steak into the tenderness of ribeye by cooking it in the sous vide and then finishing it in the air fryer.
Best Way To Cook Thick Rump Steak?
The best way to cook thick rump steak is in the air fryer. Rump steak in the air fryer is amazing and you get better control from it compared to frying it in the pan.
You can then set the correct temperature and the correct time, get a great sear on your rump steak and then come back when the air fryer beeps.
How To Cook Rump Steak?
This is how crazy simple it is to cook rump steak in an air fryer:
- Load rump steak into the air fryer.
- Season your rump steak.
- Air fry + turn.
- Air fry + serve.
You can probably see now why I am so obsessed with cooking steak in the air fryer.
How Long Does Rump Steak Take To Cook?
Rump steak is rather fast considering how thick a rump steak is. You can perfectly cook a rump steak in the air fryer in 15 minutes.
You simply do 8 minutes on one side and then 7 minutes on the other.
Though, do note, I love a rare steak and the hubby likes a medium, so add an extra 3-4 minutes if you like your steak a medium to well done.

- Load your rump steak into your air fryer basket. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Air fry for 7 minutes at 140c/280f.
