Air Fryer Frozen Steak
We have many, many amazing loyal readers at RecipeThis.com and I love it when our readers have a recipe suggestion that they would like us to try next.
One morning when I was scrolling through my emails, I got a request for air fryer frozen steak.
My first thought was that frozen steak in the air fryer would be awful. The steak would be chewy, it wouldn’t have been tenderised prior to being cooked and it might end up overcooked.
I bought some sirloin steak and loaded it into the freezer, thinking I will air fry it when I get a minute.
I also didn’t want to tell Dominic just yet. After all, he loves his steak and I know that he wouldn’t have liked the idea of frozen steak.
Well on a hot summer’s day we finally got around to experimenting with air fryer frozen sirloin steak and this is the result!
Can You Cook A Steak From Frozen?
Yes you can cook frozen steak in air fryer, but you must cook it low so it doesn’t dry out.
When you air fry steak you would normally cook it at 180c/360f but for frozen steak to keep it juicy we recommend 170c/340f instead.
Can You Cook Frozen Steak In Air Fryer?
Yes, air frying frozen steak is amazing and perfect for when you forgot to get steak out of the freezer for dinner.
You can unpack some frozen steaks and then air fry them from frozen and they will be done before you know it.
Or make it a meal and also add to the air fryer some air fryer frozen French fries, or go homemade with some air fryer chips.
Can You Air Fry Frozen Meat?
Yes you can cook frozen meat in air fryer. But you must cook it low so it doesn’t dry out. You could do air fryer frozen chicken wings, air fryer frozen chicken thighs, or why not try air fryer frozen bacon.
Though opt for 170c/340f over 180c/360f so it’s doesn’t become rubbery.
How To Defrost Steak In Air Fryer?
To defrost steak in the air fryer, it’s a similar system, just using a much lower temperature.
We recommend 120c/250f so you are not cooking it and use the same time as cooking from frozen.
Do the same with other meats such as air fryer frozen chicken breast, air fryer frozen whole chicken or air fryer frozen sausages.
Frozen Steak Air Fryer Ingredients
Steak – We used frozen sirloin steak in air fryer, but you can use any such as ribeye, rump, New York strip etc. Don’t place the steaks on top of each other and in an average sized air fryer you can usually fit two medium 8oz steaks side by side.
Seasoning. Then for seasoning your sirloin steak I recommend keeping it simple. Steak is amazing on its own, especially frozen sirloin and add too much seasoning and you take the taste away from the best feature. I recommend just some salt and pepper on each side.
Can You Recommend An Air Fryer?
I often get asked which air fryers I recommend and which one I use. In 95% of our air fryer recipes, we use either the Philips Air Fryer XL or the Cosori XL because they are the best ones, we have found out of many air fryers we have tried over the years. You can click on the links above and read up on them. But if you would rather have a dual air fryer we recommend this Ninja Dual (make sure you order the right one as not all are good) or the Philips Dual.
How To Cook Frozen Steak In Air Fryer?
- Season. Start by seasoning your steak ready for the air fryer. For frozen air fryer steak, we recommend a good sprinkling of sea salt and black pepper. You can also add another seasoning of choice such as dried steak seasoning, smoked paprika or some garlic powder.
- Cook. Load the frozen steaks into the air fryer. For an average air fryer size, you can fit two into the basket! Then start cooking your steak in air fryer. We recommend 16 minutes at 170c/340f.
- Turn. As the air fryer hits the halfway cook time, turn the steak over with tongs and then re-season on the other side before carrying on with the final cook time.
And I am sure you can see now how easy it is to cook frozen steak in air fryer and why you should be doing it too!
How Long To Cook Frozen Steak In Air Fryer?
For our frozen steaks in air fryer, we cooked them for a total of 16 minutes. They take longer than our thawed steak, but don’t require a defrost first.
The recommended frozen steak in air fryer temperature is 170c/340f and this is to get your steak nice and juicy in the centre without drying it out.
Frozen Steak In Air Fryer Medium Rare
We love to air fry steak from frozen to a medium rare. So note that the time and temp mentioned above will produce a medium rare which might not be to your taste.
If you wanted it medium add an extra 2 minutes each side, for medium to well another 2 minutes on top of that, and another 3 minutes on top of that for well done.
Giving medium a total cooking time of 20 minutes, medium to well 24 minutes and 30 minutes for well done.
Sam & Doms Top Tips For Success
We find that air fryer steak is cooked the exact same way regardless of whether or not it is t bone, fillet, sirloin, or another type of steak. Its also much simpler compared to steak in a pan. Simply flip the steak halfway through.
Another important tip You can also cook your fillet steak with some of your favourite sides. For example, air fryer frozen shrimp takes the same time to cook. So why not cook a handful of frozen king prawns/shrimp with your steak?

just found your website and, funny enough, I’m from Portugal. great find.
Hi Alexandre,
Hope you enjoy our website 🙂
Cosori air fryer /toaster oven took 22 minutes at 380. Came out rare and cold in center. Used 1” thick top round London broil. In this air fryer 26 minutes probably would have nailed it. Gave slices about 20 seconds in microwave and it was great.
That was perfect for my husband. How much longer for a well done steak?
Hi Cathy,
I would do between 25-30 minutes for a well done steak 🙂
Life changing. Keep your food frozen and use this recipe. Best steak I’ve ever cooked.
A question about air frying a frozen steak. How thick was the steak?
Hello,
The steak we used was about 1 inch thickness at its thickest point 🙂
This is so delicious!!!!! Absolutely love it..
I loved this frozen steak and so many of your recipes! You’re awesome Samantha!
I was supposed to grill steaks on a gas grill this Sunday… but now i am going to follow our air fryer steak recipe. It worked perfect for me and my partner yesterday and can’t wait to do it in a bigger batch next time. Thanks!
This was delicious and so easy! I’ve always been hesitant about cooking steak from frozen but this came out perfect! It had a nice crust, tender inside, lots of juice and I seared the edges, too. It really was great. My son loved it and so did I! I’ve tried a few of your recipes and they have been fantastic. You’re my go-to when I need a great air fryer recipe. Thank you, Samantha!
