Be-Ro Chocolate Cake

As food bloggers we are often asked about where the inspiration came from for our recipes.

Well, this air fryer chocolate cake started off as a Be-Ro chocolate cake that was originally in my little Be-Ro books as a kid. My Grandma loved to bake the Be-Ro way and this chocolate cake recipe began from  the book and then got tweaked and tweaked more and more over the years.

I added in extra ingredients that made it taste even better, swapped out ingredients and this Be-Ro chocolate cake became the cake that I made for every birthday, family gathering or special occasion over the years.

When it was Kyle’s birthday that is the cake, I always made him and as a kid with nut allergies he could never have a shop bought one.

So, when we moved from using the oven to the air fryer in 2012, his chocolate cake was then made in the air fryer.

Many, many birthdays have followed and this is the air fryer chocolate sponge we made for him and now for Sofia & Jorge on their birthdays too.

Shop Local Air Fryer Challenge

We love shopping local and have a favourite greengrocer that we get weekly veggie boxes from and a local butcher that supplies a lot of the meat you see on Recipe This. We often find that the quality is much better, and the prices are similar too. We challenged ourselves to make as many meals as possible out of a veg box + meat box and share with you the results.

This air fryer recipe is one of those recipes and click here to view our air fryer shop local recipes.

Can You Bake Cake In Air Fryer?

Yes, you can bake a cake in the air fryer and I have been doing so for many, many years now. I find it’s the easiest way to cook a cake and no worrying that you forgot about the cake in the oven, or that your oven is too powerful and that you have burnt the cake.

Are Air Fryers Good For Baking Cakes?

Yes, they are. We have found that you can do this chocolate cake in the air fryer, but you can also do fruit cakes such as our air fryer Christmas cake or make an air fryer victoria sponge or even something totally different like our air fryer jammie dodger cake.

Though you might have to tweak your time and temp as like with ovens they can vary with air fryers.

Which Air Fryer Cake Is The Best?

The best air fryer cake that we have ever made is this moist chocolate sponge. Whenever I mention it to my mum and dad, they always say it’s the most moist and light cake that they have ever eaten.

My mum doesn’t eat cake, but put this air fryer cake in front of her and she has a fork ready.

Can You Use A Normal Cake Tin In An Air Fryer?

Yes, you can. That is exactly what I used for many years for baking cakes in the air fryer. And a lot of the usual cake tins that you would use in the oven can be used in the air fryer.

Just think that some containers will be too tall or too wide for your air fryer and its about finding one that fits.

Here is the cake tin we originally used in the air fryer, before we moved onto silicone instead for ease of use.

Chocolate Cake Air Fryer Ingredients

Chocolate Cake Air Fryer Ingredients

Sugar – For the best results we recommend granulated sugar. You can use caster, but we find that it stops the cake from being as moist and doesn’t have the right level of sweetness.

Flour – We also recommend self raising flour, as I am all about an incredibly easy chocolate cake and not one where I have to add in extra ingredients.

Butter – Because we are making cakes it is best to use unsalted butter rather than salted.

Eggs – You can make a cake more moist by adding in more eggs and using some oil. So, we use a small quantity of extra virgin olive oil and then use 3 large eggs.

Milk – Then for the liquid to bring the cake together we use milk. And it must be fat free milk or as us Brits call it skimmed milk. The reason for this (which is really important) is that its not as heavy on the cake and will create a moist chocolate cake.

Extras – Then of course to make it taste like a yummy chocolate cake you will want to add in cocoa powder and some vanilla extract.

Can You Recommend An Air Fryer?

I often get asked which air fryers I recommend and which one I use. In 95% of our air fryer recipes, we use either the Philips Air Fryer XL or the Cosori XL because they are the best ones, we have found out of many air fryers we have tried over the years. You can click on the links above and read up on them.

Plus, we recommend you head over to our air fryer recipes category as we have more than 500 tried and tested everyday air fryer recipes and have been air frying for 10+ years.

Get Some Silicone Cake Pans

We bought some round red silicone cake pans and they have been a life saver. Similar to these ones here.

They are one of those amazing air fryer accessories that you must own, and you can do so much with. They are ideal because when you have cooked the food, you simply peel away the silicone so no scrubbing to do or lining with parchment paper.

You can also get them for different air fryer sizes such as 6 inch, 7 inch or 8 inch.

I use them all the time and have used them to melt chocolate in (yes really), air fryer frittata, air fryer banana bread, air fryer lemon drizzle cake, air fryer brownies and so much more.

How To Make Chocolate Cake In Air Fryer?

air-fryer-chocolate-cake-step-by-step
  • Sugar. Start by adding to a large mixing bowl the butter and sugar and mix with a hand mixer until fluffy and starting to change colour.
  • Eggs. Next crack the eggs into the bowl, along with adding the vanilla and olive oil and mix for a few more minutes with your hand mixer until well mixed.
  • Extras. Then add in the milk and cocoa powder and continue to mix until smooth and then add in the flour. Once it is well mixed it is ready for air frying.
  • Fill. Pour the chocolate cake batter between the two silicone cake pans and if you only have one, then do one at a time.
  • Cook. Place the silicone cake pan into the air fryer basket and air fry for 10 minutes at 180c/360f followed by 25 minutes at 160c/320f.
  • Cool. Then remove the silicone pans from the air fryer, peel away the silicone once cool enough to handle and completely cool before decorating.

What About Decorating Your Air Fryer Cake?

Because this cake air fryer recipe would have ended up way too long, if we had done decorating and the making of the cake in the same post, we have done a part 1 and a part 2.

Part 1 is what you are reading now, and part 2 is the decorating part where we share with you 2 different birthday cakes we have made, as well as behind the scenes of how the cake was decorated for the cookbook.

How Long Do You Bake A Cake In The Air Fryer?

Yes, you sure can reheat apple crumble in the air fryer. If you have just a small portion then we recommend using an air fryer cake pan as it will sit in it perfectly. Or if you are using ramekin apple crumble, then you can just place the ramekins back in the air fryer.

Then we recommend 5 minutes at 160c/320f to reheat the crumble.

Notes

Thermometers. Whilst you associate them most with checking the internal temperature of chicken, they are brilliant for checking a cake. Place it in the centre of the cake and if it comes out clean the cake is done.

I made this today and while it tastes absolutely gorgeous and is really moist, it’s really dense! I’m not sure why that is…

Also, time wise I did exactly what was said with half the mix and it wasn’t cooked through at all. In total it took 51 minutes to cook – 10 mins @ 180 then 16 mins @ 160 followed by 20 @ 160 in 5 min bursts then 5 mins @ 180.

Did I do something incorrectly? I used all the measurements and instructions provided. It is an absolutely gorgeous cake though!

    • Hi Hannah,

I am not exactly sure why it would come out so dense but sometimes it can be the flour used. We have had trouble with our cakes when using different flours over here so that is the only thing i can come up with, sorry i cannot be of more help 🙂
