Air Fryer Jacket Potato Microwave
I love a jacket potato and as a kitchen gadget owner, I have a few different gadgets that I cook a jacket potato in.
I love microwave jacket potatoes, air fryer jacket potatoes, air fryer frozen jacket potatoes, slow cooker jacket potatoes and steaming them with our instant pot jacket potatoes recipe.
But what about the best of both worlds? Combining two of your favourite kitchen gadgets to bring the best tasting jacket potatoes with a much faster cooking time.
Well, let me introduce you to jacket potato in air fryer and microwave.
Its as simple as it sounds – you give the jacket potatoes a head start in the microwave first, then spray with olive oil and finish them in the air fryer for that lovely crispy skin, that you know and love when it comes to potatoes.
But what you will look forward to the most is seeing how much of a cooking time you can reduce, by getting the microwave to give your potatoes a head start.
Pre Cook Potatoes In Microwave Before Baking?
How many of us remember our mum and how she would pre cook potatoes in the microwave before they are baked in the oven.
It was important because if you just placed baking potatoes into the oven they would take forever.
Well, that is the same concept with baked potato in air fryer after microwave. But its not something I do all the time. So, its personal choice if you want to. You see, when you baked potatoes in the oven, they took what felt like hours and hours. But baked potatoes in the air fryer (depending on size) take 30-60 minutes.
Should I Microwave My Potato Before Baking?
This is personal choice and is all about saving time and not waiting, what feels like a lifetime for your potatoes.
But there is another cheats method when it comes to potatoes, if you don’t like the idea of microwaving or maybe you don’t have a microwave. Instead opt for our air fryer baby potatoes recipe which taste just like jacket potatoes, but because they are smaller are done in less than half the time of a classic jacket potato.
Are Baked Potatoes Better In Air Fryer Or Microwave?
Air fryer baked potatoes are much better, it’s the lovely crispy texture of the skin and how they taste just like oven baked potatoes, but with a lot less of a cooking time.
However, the microwave is fantastic for giving your baked potatoes a head start. That way you have the best of both worlds with your potatoes.
Jacket Potato Microwave And Air Fryer Ingredients
Potatoes – We used four large baked potatoes. We didn’t want to use more than this, because we needed for them all to fit into one air fryer basket. Or if you have a dual you can do two in each drawer.
Oil – For the best baked potato its all about that crispy potato skin. We recommend having some olive oil that you can spray on the skin before adding them to the air fryer.
Toppings – Then to finish off your jacket potato in microwave and air fryer we recommend some of your favourite toppings. We like ours with butter and usually some tuna and sweetcorn too.
Can You Recommend An Air Fryer?
I often get asked which air fryers I recommend and which one I use. In 95% of our air fryer recipes, we use either the Philips Air Fryer XL or the Cosori XL because they are the best ones, we have found out of many air fryers we have tried over the years. You can click on the links above and read up on them. But if you would rather have a dual air fryer we recommend this Ninja Dual (make sure you order the right one as not all are good) or the Philips Dual.
How To Cook Jacket Potato In Air Fryer After Microwave?
- Microwave. Fork your potatoes to help the steam escape as they cook in the microwave. Then place the potatoes directly on the turntable inside the microwave.
- Cook. We recommend cooking the jacket potatoes on full power in the microwave for 16 minutes for large ones, like the ones we are doing.
- Cool. You then need the potatoes to be cool enough for you to touch. You can place them into the fridge for 10 minutes, or in the winter months we usually place them outside.
- Oil. Then use a plate to place the potatoes onto and then spray with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Use your hands to rub the oil and seasonings into the skin of the potatoes.
- Air Fry. Transfer the potatoes to the air fryer basket, spreading them out and air fry at 180c/360f for 10 minutes, turn over and then cook for a final 5 minutes.
How Long To Cook Jacket Potato In Microwave Then Air Fryer?
The results of our microwave and air fryer jacket potato challenge is that this method is much quicker.
The baked potatoes we used were rather large so would take 60 minutes if just using the air fryer.
But we cooked them for 16 minutes first using the microwave, then 15 minutes using the air fryer.
This means that we had cooked the jacket potatoes in nearly half the cooking time.
