Jacket Potato Microwave
We are now on day 21 of our microwave month and its so exciting sharing with you all these delicious everyday foods that you can cook in the microwave.
On Friday we showed you how to microwave sweet potatoes, but what about the white potato alternative?
What about grabbing some of your favourite white potatoes from the pantry, loading them into the microwave and coming back less than 15 minutes later to perfectly cooked jacket potatoes?
That has to be the ultimate quick jacket potato, right?
I used to watch my grandma in her final years, when she was just eating for one, loading a medium jacket potato into the microwave and cooking it to perfection.
And it has me thinking that whether you are cooking 1 or 6 jacket potatoes in the microwave, it must be one of the easiest ever lunches or dinners.
Can You Microwave Potatoes?
Yes, you can. Cooking potatoes in the microwave is a great way to quickly put potatoes on the dinner table.
You don’t have to make jacket potatoes in the microwave, you could also do diced potatoes, wedges, potatoes for mashed potatoes and so many other varieties.
Can You Bake A Potato In The Microwave?
Yes, you can. Microwave jacket potatoes are amazing and so quick to cook too. You can steam jacket potatoes in the microwave using a steamer basket, use a baked potato holder (like we are doing today) or just bake a potato on a plate in the microwave.
No wonder jacket potatoes in the microwave, is the most popular item to microwave!
What Is A Jacket Potato?
A jacket potato is what us Brits call a baked potato. The idea is that the potato is cooked in its jackets (aka the skin) and its often called cooking jackets.
If you live in the US, then a jacket potato is the same as a baked potato. Though us Brits to have different toppings, such as tuna and sweetcorn with mayonnaise, or baked beans with cheese.
Best Way To Cook Jacket Potatoes
I have made air fryer baked potatoes, instant pot baked potatoes, slow cooker baked potatoes and now here I am with microwave baked potatoes.
If I had to choose just one that I would cook forever, that would become my best way to cook jacket potatoes it would be the air fryer.
That is because you can load them in, and 30 minutes later you have a crispy jacket potato.
But of course, we all want things done faster.
If you want the speed of the microwave with crispy jacket potatoes, I recommend combining the microwave and the air fryer.
Do 10 minutes in the microwave, then add a little oil and salt and pepper to the skin and then air fry for 5 minutes.
And those 15 minutes are still much quicker than the oven.
Microwave Jacket Potato Holder
I also used a microwave jacket potato holder. This stops your microwave jacket potato from drying out and also makes it cook quicker.
I recommend getting one of these and experimenting to see how it compares to other methods.

Jacket Potato Microwave Ingredients
Potatoes – To cook jackets in the microwave you will need 1-4 jacket potatoes. You can cook just one or do up to four when using a microwave potato holder. We also used M&S jacket potatoes and wow you could really tell the difference compared to regular potatoes.
Holder – We used a microwave holder and then you place a potato on each of the four corners.
Seasoning – Then for seasoning your jackets, I like to keep it simple with just salt and pepper.
Toppings – You can add whatever toppings you would like to your jacket potatoes. I love butter, coleslaw and cheese the most. My other favourite is tuna and sweetcorn with salad cream.
Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this jacket potato microwave recipe it has just been our Panasonic Microwave Oven. We have this one and its wonderful for many types of microwave recipes.
As well as your microwave you will need a potato stand that will fit in your microwave. We recommend this one.
