Steak And Ale Stew

Growing up in Yorkshire, England, there is always steak and ale stew on every pub menu and in many restaurants too. It was one of my grandad’s favourite comfort foods and now it still feels like it hasn’t gone out of fashion.

We were at a food show at a beautiful castle in Yorkshire and there were some amazing food stalls.

The one that caught my attention was the one selling Yorkshire Pudding Ale. Yes, the same mixture that goes into your air fryer Yorkshire puddings, has been made into an ale. I bought some Yorkshire Pud Ale out of interest and put it in a cupboard and forgot about it.

Then a few months later, remembered about the Yorkshire Pud Ale and decided to try it out with our slow cooker steak and ale stew. Opened one, did a taste test and thought, this tastes better than Guinness and better give it a go.

This steak and ale stew recipe was the result and a reminder that you can use any ale that you can have in to make a delicious beef stew with.

Can You Put Ale In Beef Stew?

Yes, you can put ale in beef stew, and it is delicious. In our slow cooker irish stew we always use Guinness and it impresses us every time we make it.

There is something about putting ale in a beef stew, that gets you excited about eating it. And you can use any ale that you have in. Perfect for moments like the one we had, when we forgot about some previous ale that we had bought.

Is Beef Stew Better With Beer Or Wine?

This is debatable, isn’t it? You have slow cooked beef in ale, which is amazing, then you also have slow cooker beef bourguignon which everyone adores.

One if cooked in beer and one is cooked in red wine.

Both are impressive.

Then you also have slow cooker recipes made with fizzy drinks such as slow cooker gammon fanta or slow cooker gammon in cola.

In our opinion, they are all fantastic, and one is not better than the other.

What Ale Is Best For Stew?

We recommend ANY quality ale in your stew. That could be the Yorkshire ale we are using today or a more universal brand like Guinness.

Drinking different ales, they are very similar tasting and will give a very similar flavour to your beef ale stew.

Why Do You Brown Beef Before Putting In Stew?

The idea behind browning beef before slow cooking it for stew, is that it adds flavour to the beef. It also flavours your slow cooker and then will add more flavour to your beef stew.

Some people skip this step and that is okay too, its whatever works best for you.
