Air Fryer Chicken Katsu
I love a chicken katsu, but it can get expensive and hard work getting together all the different ingredients that you need.
So, I had a plan – instead of buying everything separately for an air fryer chicken katsu instead, I would buy a Wagamama katsu curry kit, combine it with some brown rice from the pantry and some spare salad and I had dinner.
No million ingredients plus it was a chance to test out the Wagamama katsu curry and see what all the fuss is about.
I also decided to make our katsu Wagamama by combining two of my favourite talents of the Ninja Foodi – cook the brown rice using the pressure cooker setting, then use the air fryer button to you guessed it…..make air fried chicken katsu.

Can You Make Katsu In An Air Fryer?
Yes, you can make katsu in an air fryer. We used the air fryer function of our Ninja Foodi, but you can make it in any air fryer that you have.
We also used the pressure cooker button for the brown rice, but of course, the brown rice is optional.
What Is A Wagamama Katsu Curry Kit?
If you have not heard of Wagamama, it is a restaurant chain, but also has dinner kits available that you can purchase when you go grocery shopping.
Via the Wagamama curry kit you get:
- Katsu curry paste
- Panko breadcrumbs
- Salad dressing
How Long Does An Air Fryer Take To Cook Chicken?
The cooking time for chicken in the air fryer can vary. For example chopped up chicken for air fryer chicken fajitas will be much faster compared to cooking an air fryer whole chicken.
But compared to the oven, the air fryer will cook chicken usually in half the time.
Why Is My Breaded Chicken Soggy In Air Fryer?
The chicken gets soggy in the air fryer when there isn’t enough of a breading over the wet ingredients and when you haven’t cooked at the right temperature for the right time.
In our first air fryer cookbook, The Complete Air Fryer Cookbook we teach you how to bread food in the air fryer including fried chicken, simple breaded chicken and fish and chips.

Chicken Katsu Air Fryer Ingredients
Kit – We used a Katsu chicken curry kit from Wagamama. If you cant get one of these it includes a katsu chicken curry paste sachet, panko breadcrumbs and salad dressing.
Add – We also added flour and egg for the breading. Along with chicken and seasonings. To add extra seasoning to your katsu air fryer recipe I also used salt, pepper, Chinese 5 spice and cumin.
Meal – To make your air fried katsu a meal we also added brown rice, a white onion to the rice along with a simple salad.
Can You Recommend A Ninja Foodi?
I often get asked which kitchen gadgets I recommend and which one I use. For the Ninja Foodi we have this one. It doesn’t have as many bells and whistles compared to some of the newer models, but it does a great job.
We can dehydrate, air fry, pressure cook, sauté, slow cook, make yoghurt and so much more.
Plus, we recommend you head over to our ninja foodi recipes category as we have been using the Ninja Foodi since 2020 and just love it for simplicity, how delicious the recipes are when cooked in it and how much time it saves us in the kitchen. We even take the Ninja Foodi on holiday with us.
How To Air Fry Chicken Katsu?
- Rice. Lets start your wagamamas katsu curry with the rice as this takes the longest to cook. You can then prep your chicken whilst your rice cooks. We sauté an onion first as this helps the rice cook better in the pressure cooker.
- Prep. In the meantime create your air fryer katsu production line. Have a flour bowl, a beaten egg bowl and a panko breadcrumbs bowl. Season the chicken and then dunk in the flour, egg and then the breadcrumbs. Mix together coconut milk with the katsu curry paste to create a curry sauce.
- Cook. When the brown rice is done transfer to a plate and add the air fryer basket. Carefully add in the breaded chicken and air fry for 20 minutes at 180c/360f. With 5 minutes remaining add the curry sauce to a ramekin and it will warm up as the chicken cooks.
- Serve. Finish by adding the salad, the salad dressing, the brown rice and slicing the chicken and adding, followed by adding the katsu curry sauce.
And that is Wagamama katsu curry made in the air fryer, using the ninja foodi, plus Ninja Foodi brown rice.
How Long To Air Fry Chicken Katsu
This chicken katsu air fryer recipe takes JUST 20 minutes plus another 18 minutes for making the brown rice first.
The chicken katsu air fryer temperature is 180c/360f. Perfect for crispy air fried chicken and stopping it from being over cooked and dry.

Kitchen Gadgets
Instructions
- Peel and dice the onion and place it into the Ninja Foodi cooking pot. Place it on sauté, add the olive oil and sauté for about 2 minutes once hot, and then press cancel.
- Add the stock to deglaze the cooking pot, add the brown rice and then use the back of a wooden spoon to push down any bits of brown rice that are out of the water to avoid crispy bits of rice. Then place the lid down, set the valve to sealing and cook for 18 minutes followed by 5 minutes of natural pressure release.
- In the meantime create a production line with a bowl for the flour, one for the beaten egg and a third with the panko breadcrumbs. Season the chicken with salt and pepper, then the Chinese 5 spice and the cumin.
- Add the chicken to the flour, then the egg and then finally in the breadcrumbs. Make sure they are fully coated in each.
- When the pressure cooker is done, remove the rice and transfer to a serving dish. Add the salad to the dish and dressing too and set aside. Also mix together the coconut milk with the katsu curry paste and add to a ramekin.
- Place the air fryer basket into the Ninja Foodi, carefully add the chicken, set the temperature to 180c/360f and the time to 20 minutes, after 15 minutes add the sauce as this will warm it through.
- Then slice the chicken and serve with the brown rice and the salad, then drizzle with the katsu curry sauce before serving.
