Instant Pot Bangers & Mash

If you love bangers and mash, then sit down and get comfy as I show you just how easy it is to make in the instant pot.

Out of favourite comfort foods as both a child and as an adult bangers and mash is there with bells on.

It was not something I had made for much as a kid, but more something that I either went out to eat or made for Dominic and the kids.

My mash loving son Kyle loves it and would often request it for dinner as a kid.

If you went to a British pub, then you can guarantee that there will be bangers and mash on the menu.

Swimming in delicious onion gravy and so flavoursome and perfect for a cheap pub meal and a night off from cooking.

But let’s face it, there is effort involved. That’s why I wanted to show you how to transform bangers and mash to the instant pot.

Its much quicker, its easier and it tastes amazing!

Can You Cook Bangers And Mash In The Instant Pot?

Yes, you can cook liver in the instant pot. But its not just about instant pot liver, its about the whole meal. Because unlike when we all had liver and onions as a kid, in the instant pot you can do the whole meal in one instant pot.

What Are Bangers & Mash?

Bangers and mash are a popular British dish comprising of sausages and mashed potatoes and often served with onion gravy.

The Brits would call it instant pot bangers and mash, but many non-Brits might refer to it as instant pot sausages and mashed potatoes.

Bangers and mash are a classic that has been around for many years. In fact, there are often remembered as a World War 2 meal.

This is because potatoes were plentiful, and you could then serve a dinner plate with less sausages and know that the potatoes would fill you up.

Why Are Sausages Called Bangers?

The term banger comes from the low quality sausage that was about during WW2. They were filled with so much rubbish that they would explode and the bang they made is where the term “bangers” originally came from.

Those these days, when people cook banger and mash they are referring to thick sausages. Such as German brats or Cumberland sausages.

What Kind Of Sausage For Bangers And Mash?

Sausages for bangers are mash are usually Cumberland sausages. The thicker the sausage the better and we usually use red onion sausages that we buy directly from our butchers.

If you live in the US then brats would make a better choice.

Bangers and Mash Instant Pot

The method of making bangers and mash in the instant pot is one of my favourite uses of the instant pot.

What you do is use the bottom of the inner pot for your sausages to cook in, then you lower a steamer basket over the sausages to make your mashed potatoes.

That way you can be making your onion gravy at the same time and you can be finishing your gravy at the same time as mashing your potatoes.

The bangers and mash method also have a quick cook time. When we made our no drain instant pot mashed potatoes the cook time is 4 times as long as this recipe. 

That is because there is less cooking in the instant pot in this recipe and because you are using a steamer basket.

Bangers And Mash Instant Pot Ingredients

Bangers – Let’s start with the hero ingredient also known as the bangers. Any thick sausage such as Cumberland or brats will work well in this recipe. Thin sausages in the instant pot cook too fast and often explode.

Potatoes – Then sausage needs its mash. I normally do a clear out of potatoes that need using up, but anything you have will do.

Onion. Then sausage and mash need plenty of onions for that delicious onion gravy. You can use red or white. Though we have used a large white one.

Stock – We also recommend having some beef stock in the instant pot for this homemade bangers and mash recipe. What we do that works for a lot of our instant pot recipes is to make instant pot beef stock cubes and then freeze them for later.

Tomatoes – Then alongside the beef stock we also add in some tinned tomatoes. They cook very well with the stock and give it that natural rich gravy for the onions.

Plus, you will also need some garlic and tomato puree to add extra flavour and a few other ingredients such as butter for your mashed potatoes.

Onion Gravy For Bangers And Mash

If you want a bangers and mash dinner with gravy recipe, then there is a very quick way to make this happen.

When you have removed the sausages and potatoes from the instant pot and you are left with the stock, juices and the onions, simply place the instant pot on sauté, and stir in some of your just mashed potatoes.

This will then create a very quick onion gravy for you to enjoy with your bangers and mash recipe.

How to cook instant pot bangers and mash. Loaded with delicious Cumberland sausages, creamy mashed potatoes, and plenty of rich onion gravy.

Instructions 

  • Peel and thinly slice lengthways the onions and place into the instant pot with olive oil and sauté until the onions have softened.

  • Add the sausages and brown on all sides. Then remove the sausages.

  • Add the tomatoes, garlic, seasoning, tomato puree, and beef stock. Use the stock and tinned tomatoes as a liquid for deglazing the instant pot.

  • Then press cancel on the sauté and add the sausages back in.

  • Add in the tall trivet and the expandable steamer. Peel and dice the potatoes and load into the steamer and season with extra salt and pepper. Place the lid on the instant pot, set the valve to sealing and pressure cook for 6 minutes followed by a 10 minute natural pressure release.

  • After releasing the pressure, transfer the potatoes to a bowl and mash with butter and salt and pepper. Then add a little extra mash to the contents of the instant pot, stir and sauté if not hot enough and this will create a thick sausage with onion gravy.

    Love your method for cooking sausages and potatoes at the same time. That is genius. Plan on doing it with some brats i have in and seeing how it goes.
