Welcome to my raspberry ripple ice cream recipe for the ice cream maker. Updated for the summer of 2020 after originally sharing it with you back in the June of 2016 and a favourite in the Milner house.
Let me confess now that I have a huge ice cream fan and for me raspberry ripple is one of those ice creams that I always buy from the ice cream parlour.
Those times when you treat yourselves and the kids to scoops and it takes you ten minutes to choose from all the different options.
You feel like that kid in the sweet shop that has 20 different ice cream flavours to choose from, but you can only have two scoops.
I always lean towards raspberry ripple ice cream and then a caramel ice cream.
Dominic is always one for chocolate brownie and probably has caramel ice cream too.
Then the kids never have a type and will always spend a good ten minutes thinking about it and then changing their minds.
The greatest thing about making our raspberry ripple ice cream is that you could fill a tub with vanilla, one tub with raspberry and another with strawberry all while following a similar ice cream recipe.
Or make one tub with three different flavours in it and you will feel like you are queuing for ice cream at an ice cream parlour just for a fraction of the cost.
Why Frozen Raspberries In Raspberry Ice Cream?
It was not until we started Recipe This and became even more obsessed with kitchen gadgets that we became obsessed with frozen fruits and vegetables.
Nutritionists had always told us to buy frozen as they were technically better for you.
The frozen fruit and vegetables are frozen when they are at their best shelf life and haven’t been sprayed with everything to prolong life the way fresh fruit and veggies has.
But you often have this attitude towards frozen food like it is the devil.
Fast forward a few years and I am amazed by how good frozen raspberries are and how much cheaper the frozen alternative is.
Instead of buying a ridiculously small container of fresh raspberries I get frozen for a fraction of the cost.
I then have a bag of frozen raspberries on the go and can grab a small portion of raspberries whenever I want to make some raspberry ripple ice cream.
If more people did this, there would be a lot less food waste.
But the reason I am telling you this is to share with you how amazing the taste is of frozen raspberries that are loaded into a homemade raspberry ripple ice cream.
Make them with fresh raspberries and you will be disappointed.
Just because every raspberry ripple ice cream you have ever tried used frozen and fresh is just not as flavoursome.
Best Raspberry Ripple Ice Cream Recipe
After making huge amounts of different homemade ice creams using the ice cream maker, we all agreed that the best was the raspberry ripple ice cream recipe.
That is because, you closed your eyes and you could not tell the difference between our homemade raspberry ripple ice cream and the Waitrose raspberry ripple ice cream.
We credit this with the method we used for adding in the frozen raspberries and staying away from fresh.
You see when you buy a lot of shop bought ice creams and cakes, they will use frozen fruit and the taste of frozen fruit is quite different to fresh.
But not only does this raspberry ripple ice cream taste as good as the supermarket alternative, it is so easy you will be wondering why you leave your ice cream maker gathering dust in the cupboard.
What Is Raspberry Ripple Ice Cream?
You are probably wondering where the name raspberry ripple ice cream came from and why it is so popular?
Raspberry ripple is a delicious alternative to strawberry ice cream. The idea is that you take vanilla ice cream add in raspberries and create cute little ripples of raspberries.
Then the ice cream becomes a mixture of vanilla and raspberry ice cream.
Just like you see below:
Though you might make one that is more raspberries or another that uses less raspberries.
Raspberry Ripple Ice Cream Recipe For Ice Cream Maker
The process of making homemade raspberry ripple ice cream using an ice cream maker is SIMPLE:
- You whisk together the egg yolks and the sugar until they are light and fluffy.
- Heat milk and cream in a pan and load it with vanilla essence.
- Combine the warm and the cold and warm up the eggs and the sugar.
- Load into the freezer for quick cooling.
- Once cool load it into the ice cream maker and allow to churn for 40 minutes.
- When it is done churning, remove an ice cream scoop of ice cream and add to your blender. Blend with frozen raspberries to make a delicious raspberry puree.
- Load your raspberry puree into the ice cream in small spoonful’s. Let it churn a little. Add some more until you have a good number of raspberry ripples that you are happy with.
- Load into containers and freeze for later.

Raspberry Ripple Ice Cream Maker Recipe
- Using an electric hand mixer or a whisk beat together the egg yolks and the sugar until they are fluffy.
- Heat milk and single cream in a small pan and add the vanilla essence.
- Add the egg mixture to the pan and stir on a high heat for about 5 minutes.
- Transfer the mixture to the fridge and allow to cool for at least an hour.
- Load the ice cream mix to your ice cream maker and set it to 40 minutes.
- When it is done churning transfer one scoop of vanilla ice cream to the blender along with a cup of frozen raspberries. Blend until you have a smooth raspberry puree.
- Load into the ice cream maker in small spoonfuls allowing it to churn in between so that you end up with cute ripples.
- Transfer to the freezer for an hour and then serve.
