Welcome to my ice cream maker luxury vanilla ice cream recipe.
We are back with our first recipe for June and our theme for June is Ice Cream and finally getting to grips with our amazing ice cream maker. We got our ice cream maker at the end of last year. A fantastic Italian model and for someone that had never owned an ice cream maker before we were suddenly in heaven.
We love Ice Cream and our favourite by choice is the Ben & Jerry’s brand. But unlike our fellow bloggers in the United States we pay a premium for it here in Portugal and there are always only about 3 flavours to choose from.
So if you can’t get it at a reasonable price, then why not make your own?
Well that is the plan. For the month of June we will be coming at you every weekday with a brand new ice cream recipe made in our ice cream maker. We didn’t do this sooner just because have you tried making ice cream after ice cream in the middle of winter? It is boring and depressing. But it is June and the first official super hot month in Portugal and this will be our cool down medicine of choice.
We also wanted our ice creams from the ice cream maker to have a reason. That is instead of saying “here is another vanilla ice cream” so each recipe will of course involve a story of why we made it and what it means to us.
So let’s enter ice cream maker heaven…..
As a child you always remember your favourite ice cream. Kids love ice cream and in the summer it makes the best ever snack.
I lived in a small seaside town in northern England. They did an amazing vanilla ice cream. It was an Italian place and none of the other ice cream bars compared to this. People would travel miles for it. They sold vanilla only and you didn’t crave strawberry or chocolate ice cream because their vanilla was out of this world.
You might go into the café and have it as part of a banana split, or a couple of scoops with a coffee. Or if I was with my dad it would be with cream on top.
I even remember taking Kyle there for his very first taste of it when he was a toddler. He had a tiny bit on his dummy and loved it. And as I recall at the time, Dominic used to get jealous that I went there without him!!!!!
It had also been around that long that my Grandma had worked there during the Second World War, so you could certainly say that it had history.
But it went downhill a couple of years before we moved away. The lovely Italian retired and passed it down the family chain. They introduced lots of different flavours and it lost its quality. So I never had any again and it must be 12 years since I last enjoyed it.
Since then I have always thought that something was missing in the ice cream department and I wanted to create my own as the first thing we made in our ice cream maker. So I set Dominic to work on some luxury vanilla ice cream and what he delivered was out of this world. I would go as far to say it is the BEST EVER ice cream I have ever tried!
- Using a whisk beat together the egg yolks and the sugar until they are fluffy.
- Heat milk and cream in a small pan and add the vanilla essence.
- Add the egg mixture to the pan and stir on a high heat for about 5 minutes.
- Transfer the mixture to the fridge and allow to cool for at least an hour.
- Add the mixture to your ice cream maker and leave it to make your ice cream for about 45 minutes.
- Transfer to the freezer or serve.
