Dried Mint

I love my dried herbs and spices in my kitchen cupboard. In fact, I have quite a big herbs and spices cupboard, plus a pantry loaded with more of them and many that are mixed up from different jars.

For example, I always have a big jar of mixed herbs, and a big jar of my favourite KFC spice blend that is easy to access when I am cooking.

But one thing I hate, is when I just need a tiny bit of a fresh herb, such as fresh mint, and nothing else that I am cooking that week needs any.

That is when dried mint is simply perfect.

You can buy your fresh mint for that one recipe. Then when you have made your mint recipe, you can save the rest of the mint and dry mint in the dehydrator setting of the air fryer and you have a great supply for other mint recipes without wasting any.

Plus, this method for dried mint in the air fryer, is the same method for many dried herbs in the air fryer. Learn one and then you can work your way around your herb family.

Can You Dry Mint Leaves?

Yes, you can dry mint leaves. You can grab any quantity of fresh mint, remove the leaves from the stems and then dry out the mint to then use in recipes.

You can use the dry mint leaves for making cups of tea, or like I do, in plenty of different recipes that call for dried mint.

Can You Dry Out Herbs In An Air Fryer?

Yes, yes, yes, you can dry out herbs in an air fryer and you will love the results. If you have an air fryer with a dehydrator setting, then its great for drying out herbs.

If not, if you have a temperature that will go as low as 55c then you make dried herbs in the air fryer.

Or if you are in the process of buying your first air fryer, I recommend the Ninja Foodi which also has a dehydrator and a fantastic dehydrator accessory available.

And if you want to see more examples of dried herbs in the air fryer, check out our air fryer dried basil and air fryer dried rosemary.

Best Way To Dry Mint?

The best way to dry mint is using the dehydrator setting of an air fryer. Its very much an overlooked function of today’s modern air fryer.

Compared to the oven you don’t need to keep the door open as the air fryer circulates the air and its like air drying mint.

Then its much quicker than a classic dehydrator and you can dry a lot of mint at once.

Is It Worth Drying Mint?

In my opinion, yes, it is worth drying mint, especially if you do a lot of cooking and love to cook with herbs and spices.

I also find it reduces my food waste by using up fresh mint and dehydrating mint in the air fryer.

Is Dried Mint As Good As Fresh?

Yes, it is, and I would say dried mint is better than fresh mint. That is because just like fresh tomatoes sold in supermarkets vs canned tomatoes, it is preserved at its best time.

Instead of fresh mint sat in your kitchen for a few days waiting to be used, it is dried at its perfect time and keeps all the great flavour of the mint and then you can use it from the storage jar as and when you need it.

Can You Dehydrate In An Air Fryer?

Yes, you sure can. I have tried many different fresh foods in the air fryer, and they have all dehydrated very well.

Whilst we are showing you today how to turn fresh basil to dry basil, fruits work very well such as dehydrated orange slices, dehydrated cherries, dehydrated mango, dehydrated lemon slices, or my personal favourite dehydrated banana chips in the air fryer.

Mint Drying Ingredients

Mint Drying Ingredients

Mint – I had bought loads of mint for some recipes and had some leftover. I dried the mint from almost two mint plants. But you can alter this depending on how much mint you have that needs using up.

Dehydrator – We also used my stackable dehydrator that I bought specifically for the Ninja Foodi. If you are dehydrating mint with an air fryer, I recommend something similar. I love this one because it allows you to have several racks of fresh mint leaves dehydrating at once.

Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this drying mint recipe it has just been our Ninja Foodi. We have this one and its wonderful for many types of recipes including dehydrating.

Plus, we recommend you head over to our air fryer recipes category as we have more than 500 tried and tested air fryer recipes and have been air frying for 10 years. And nearly all are suitable for the Ninja Foodi air fryer setting.

How To Dry Mint Leaves?

air-frryer-dehyrated-mint-step-by-step
  • Separate. Remove the mint leaves from the stems and then if they need it give them a wash and pat them dry.
  • Load. Add your fresh mint leaves to your dehydrator shelves. Start at the bottom, clipping on each shelf as it fills up.
  • Load. Then add your stackable dehydrator into the Ninja Foodi and place the air fryer lid down.
  • Cook. Set the temperature to 55c/130f and the function to dehydrator and then dry mint for 2 hours or until fully dried and like dried out mini leaves in the park.
  • Finish. Then once the dehydrator is done, remove the dried mint leaves and load into a blender. Blend until you have the texture of dried mint. Load into an airtight container and consume in dried mint recipes within a year.

And I am sure you can see now how easy it is drying mint leaves in air fryer and why you should be doing it too!

How Long To Dehydrate Mint Leaves?

We recommend 2 hours for dehydrating mint in the air fryer. Though we note that in some air fryers its quicker than others.

We were also quite surprised by how much the dehydrate time for dried herbs can vary between different herbs, so do keep an eye on it.

How Long Does Dried Mint Last?

Dehydrated mint leaves will last the same time as dried mint that you bought already dried. As long as it is kept in an airtight container in a cool pantry.

Though in the Milner house we love to use dried mint in recipes, and it will often be gone within a month.

What You Need To Dehydrate In A Ninja Foodi?

In a traditional dehydrator you have a lot of shelves that you can fill with food you want to dry. Of course a Ninja Foodi is one big pot so how do you do it? You buy the Ninja Foodi dehydrator accessory and it is a stack of shelves just like a traditional dehydrator and can store a lot on it and then place it inside of your Ninja Foodi cooking pot.

How To Store Dried Mint?

I buy these plastic containers for when I am dehydrating. They are airtight and are also great for transporting if going on vacation.

They are also very good for taking to a weigh in place to buy exact quantities of dried produce. Such as dried chickpeas for instant pot chickpeas.

Then I store the dried mint in my herbs cupboard for easy access.

What To Do With Dried Mint?

For using dried mint, we recommend you start with some tea. Many dry mint leaves just for making cups of tea and you can do the same.

Or you can use dried mint in traditional dried mint recipes.  Such as soup maker minted pea soup. Or even recipes that call for fresh mint you can swap with this dried mint such as our air fryer frozen falafel bowls.
