Chickpeas In Instant Pot
I am a huge fan of chickpeas and so is my four year old son Jorge. In fact, if you were to ask him what his favourite foods are, he would say our air fryer cajun shrimp and air fryer chickpeas.
When he is ill, he will ask for one of these two foods.
Then he will eat chickpeas like other people eat potato chips.
I will buy can after can after can of chickpeas, drain them, then air fry them for him.
But I am also aware of the high salt content in a traditional can of chickpeas and was looking for a healthier option for Jorge. One that would be just as cheap, would be easy and convenient and one that we can rinse and repeat whenever we are low on chickpeas.
I decided to FINALLY after a long time of thinking about it, buy some dried chickpeas and see what the fuss is about with instant pot chickpeas.
Plus, as well as our free newsletter, we also have a free instant pot mini course. It is ideal for instant pot beginners or those that want to get more confident with their instant pot. The free course runs for 5 days with a new lesson delivered each day to your inbox.
Can I Cook Chickpeas Without Soaking?
Yes, you can. You only need to soak chickpeas if you are cooking them via a traditional method such as boiling your chickpeas in a pan.
But thanks to the Instant Pot, you can create no soak chickpeas in record time. Forget soaking your chickpeas overnight. Instead load the ingredients into the instant pot pressure cooker and come back later when it beeps.
Instant Pot Chickpeas With Many Names!
Ask us Milner’s and we will always call them instant pot chickpeas. But I notice around the world and in different cultures that they have different names.
For example, here in Portugal they are called Grão-De-Bico and like most places you can buy a bag of them dried and use them in many recipes. And just like the rest of the Mediterranean they are used a lot here in stews in winter and salads in summer.
Then of course, many refer to them as garbanzo beans in instant pot, or call it chick peas rather than chickpeas.
I find that as most people refer to them as chickpeas, that is what I will call them in this recipe. So, if you call yours something different, note that they are one of the same.

Chickpeas – Any dried chickpeas will do the trick. Remember to cook chickpeas in the instant pot, they are no soak and can go straight in.
Liquid – Its essential to have liquid to send the instant pot to pressure. You can opt for a vegetable broth or vegetable stock, or keep it simple with water. I much prefer boiling chickpeas in the instant pot with water. That way I can use them with any recipe.
Seasoning – You can keep it simple with salt and pepper, or mix it up with other seasonings, depending on what you are using them for. Or if you are making hummus, you can add in garlic for extra flavour.

Then also add:

Or if you want a chocolate alternative you can also make chocolate hummus. Again dump everything in the instant pot, but replace the extra ingredients with:
This will then create a creamy chocolate dip made from hummus and is very addictive!
Instant Pot Chickpeas Curry
Another of my favourite instant pot recipes with chickpeas is to stir your just cooked chickpeas with my homemade pressure cooker curry sauce.
It’s simple, filling, and full of flavour and perfect for using up spare chickpeas with.
Or even better, make our air fryer chickpeas as they are wonderfully crispy and then toss in the sauce and reheat in the air fryer, like we show you in our air fryer chickpea curry.
