Potatoes In A Tin
Potatoes in a tin take me back a lot of years. When me and Dom first moved in together buying fresh fruit and veggies seemed such a stretch, so everything came out of a tin, or can as you might call it.
And everything came out of Aldi as it was the cheapest.
There was Aldi tinned potatoes, cream of chicken soup, tinned carrots and OMG the tinned stewing steak was so disgusting it tasted like dog food. But when you are on a budget and young and in love you don’t care.
But out of all those tinned products we bought the tinned potatoes was the best and we would cook with them frequently.
But I must admit I hadn’t touched a tinned potato for more than 20 years when someone asked me if I would show them how to cook canned potatoes in air fryer.
But air fryer canned potatoes sounded like fun, it sounded like a trip down memory lane and I was ready to give them a go.
Asda Yellow Label Produce
I have also become obsessed with Asda and their yellow label products recently and have tried many of them out with kitchen gadgets and also talked about how much of them you get for your money.
So no surprise that I am using the Asda just essentials canned potatoes and cooking them in the air fryer.
Can I Cook Potatoes In An Air Fryer?
Yes, you sure can. I have lost count of the amount of times I have cooked potatoes in the air fryer.
They are truly delicious and along with chicken, potatoes is the best food to air fry.
If you have not tried them yet I recommend you start with air fryer frozen French fries, then air fryer potato wedges and also add air fryer baked potatoes to your must air fry list.
Is Air Fried Potatoes Good?
Yes, air fried potatoes are VERY VERY GOOD. They are much lower in calories compared to the deep fat fryer, yet they are just as crispy.
I recommend to appreciate the difference in calories and texture that you make air fryer cajun fries.
Can You Roast Tinned Potatoes?
Yes, you can roast tinned potatoes. I recommend when considering doing canned potatoes in air fryer, that you think of them like blanched potatoes.
From those times when you used to blanch the roast potatoes in a pan of water, before adding butter and roasting the potatoes in the oven.
When you roast tinned potatoes, you must expect a similar outcome. The tinned potatoes are cooked already, and that they are soaked in water so are harder to crisp because of their wet texture.
Are Canned Potatoes Already Cooked?
Yes, they are. When you cook with canned potatoes note that they are blanched and just cooked enough for them to be canned and to make them last longer. That same rule applies to other vegetables too such as when you buy a can of carrots or a can of peas.
Tinned Potatoes Air Fryer Ingredients
Potatoes – We used one can of Asda Just Essentials canned potatoes. I recommend just doing one can to begin with to see if you like them first, before you do more.
Butter – The best potatoes are usually the ones with garlic butter and we have gone with melted butter and garlic for this recipe.
Garlic – You can use fresh garlic, but we have gone with garlic puree because it means less prep and is just as good.
Seasoning – Then for seasoning of your air fryer canned new potatoes we have used salt, pepper, and parsley.
Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this tinned new potatoes in air fryer recipe in air fryer it has been our Philips Air Fryer. We recommend this one and its wonderful for many types of air fryer recipes.
Plus, we recommend you head over to our air fryer recipes category as we have more than 500 tried and tested air fryer recipes and have been air frying for 10 years.
How To Air Fry Canned Potatoes?
- Drain. Start by draining the tinned new potatoes. Then place them onto kitchen towel (paper towel) and give them a good pat dry, to lose some of the extra moisture.
- Prep. Then place the potatoes into a bowl with the melted butter, garlic and seasonings and mix well with your hands.
- Cook. Then place the tin potatoes in the air fryer and air fry for 15 minutes at 200c/400f or until crispy to your liking.
And I am sure you can see now why people like air fried canned potatoes.
How To Make Canned Potatoes Crispy?
Make canned potatoes crispy by cooking them in the air fryer. But its not just about air frying canned potatoes, but making sure you add oil or butter, and pat them dry to make them crispier.
How Long To Cook Canned Potatoes In Air Fryer?
The tinned potatoes air fryer cook time is 20 minutes which is rather disappointing. You see, roasting tinned potatoes, should be quicker because they are already cooked, compared to our air fryer baby potatoes that are not cooked.
But for the same level of effort, I find that air fryer baby potatoes is the better of the two options.

What is the actual cooking time for tinned potatoes? You state 3 different times in your write up and recipe 10, 15 & 20 minutes. With that there is then the confusion about cooking temperature. What temp for what time?
Hi Greg,
Sorry for the confusion but it is 20 minutes but if you like them crispier add another few minutes 🙂
Haven’t tried this yet, but was wondering if you can use and air fryer liner or if it has to be done in the basket?
Hi Trista,
Yes that should be fine but the cooking times may need adjusting as we did not use a liner and sometimes adding the liner can change the cooking times 🙂
Not my most favourite potato to do but my son asked if i could cook them in the air fryer and could not find a recipe until i came across your website and realised you had just done it, so they turned out amazing for him and he said he wants them like this all the time, so thank you for the recipe and my son says thanks as well.
