Quorn Bolognese has all the ingredients of a classic spag bol, it is just meat free and perfect for vegetarians that miss their meat sauce over spaghetti and want a great Plan B.

I hated the idea that as a kid I couldn’t cook as much as I liked and wished something like that was available when I was young. I always go to their cookery class because I love cooking and its nice to learn something new yourself.

On the kids first ever cookery class which was just over an hour long, they made homemade spaghetti. They rolled it out, put it through the machine and proudly took home with them their own homemade pasta.

At the same time, the teacher made a quorn Bolognese to go with the spaghetti to take home and the kids even helped her chop the carrots for it.

The reason she did quorn Bolognese instead of a meaty version? No, it wasn’t because there were vegetarians in the room, but because it was faster to cook when she had limited time and needed to teach the kids how to make spaghetti.

It got me thinking that quorn is so much easier to cook with than minced beef and makes a fantastic alternative to slow cooker spag bol.

So today is all about slow cooker quorn spag bol a delicious meat free Bolognese that is cheap to make, easy to make and reheats perfectly too.

What Is Quorn Mince?

Quorn mince is simply a vegetarian version of minced beef. Its very popular here in the UK and you can use it as a replacement for minced beef, pork, lamb etc in recipes that would normally contain meat.

Quorn can then create a meat free cottage pie, meat free spag bol, meat free Bolognese pizza and the list goes on and on.

Best Way To Cook Quorn Mince?

The best way to cook quorn mince in the slow cooker. That is because when you cook quorn it can be a little dry, because its not the same as regular minced beef and the slow cooker produces the best results.

Just like with a tougher cut of meat, the slow cooker does a better job.

What To Make With Quorn Mince?

You can use quorn mince in the same way as you would with any regular one pot mince dishes. Think pasta bakes, cottage pie, mince cobbler and so on. So basically, any of our new slow cooker mince recipes that we are featuring this week can be made with quorn mince.

Can You Put Quorn Mince In A Slow Cooker?

Yes, you can. Quorn mince is amazing in the slow cooker. You use it as a substitute for minced beef, minced lamb, minced pork etc though I find its closer in texture to minced turkey or chicken.

You also don’t need to worry about browning your quorn like you do with other mince that you load into the slow cooker.

Can You Cook Quorn Mince From Frozen?

Yes, you can. Quorn is like cooked mince and can be loaded straight into the slow cooker, or the instant pot, whilst still frozen.

Your quorn mince will soon heat through and also mixes really well from frozen, unlike minced beef which is like this huge ice block until it melts.

Quorn Bolognese Recipe Ingredients

Quorn – It starts with a bag of quorn mince. Though of course to cook quorn mince is easy peasy and can literally just be thrown into the slow cooker.

Pasta – You can serve any pasta below your Bolognese sauce. What we did was use some spaghetti and some linguine and did one lot with our quorn Bolognese and another lot with our minced beef Bolognese.

Veggies – I love the mix of carrots, celery, and onion that go into a veggie Bolognese. They also add extra flavour to the quorn mince.

Garlic. Frozen garlic is a genius. I buy chopped garlic from the supermarket (usually Tesco or Iceland) and you can just add a little to our vegetarian spaghetti bolognese recipe without needing to peel and slice garlic.

Tomatoes – I also use both tinned tomatoes and tomato puree or as you might call it tomato paste. The tomato combo adds a delicious flavour to your Bolognese.

Seasoning – Then for seasoning we used salt, pepper, basil, and oregano.  

Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in our vegetarian bolognese recipe it has just been our Crockpot. We have this one and its wonderful for many types of slow cooker recipes and also great for easy Sunday lunches.

How To Cook Quorn Mince Bolognese?

  • Prep. Start by peeling and dicing your onion and carrots and clean and dice your celery.
  • Sauté. Add your veggies and frozen garlic and sauté with a little extra virgin olive oil.
  • Dump. Next dump in the rest of your ingredients (apart from the spaghetti) stir and then slow cook on high for 3 hours.
  • Soak. A fantastic trick is load dried spaghetti into water and it will turn it from dried pasta into fresh pasta. This then speeds up the cook time of your spaghetti and you can simply load it into the microwave or the air fryer for a couple of minutes with some butter and it will be delicious.
  • Stir. When the slow cooker is done, stir your veggie spag bol and serve your Bolognese sauce over your spaghetti.

And I am sure you can see why this recipe for quorn Bolognese is a true favourite of mine.

How Long Does Quorn Mince Spag Bol In Slow Cooker Take?

This quorn bolognese slow cooker recipe takes JUST 3 hours on high or 6 hours if using the low setting. Unlike a lot of our other slow cooker mince recipes, you only need to dump the ingredients in the slow cooker once, then come back in three hours to stir and tuck into your Bolognese.

  • Peel and dice the onion and the carrots as well as cleaning and slicing the celery.

  • Use the sauté function to sauté the onion, garlic, carrots, and celery with extra virgin olive oil.

  • Once they are sautéed add everything else into the slow cooker (apart from the spaghetti) and mix well. Slow cook for 3 hours on high.

  • Whilst the slow cooker is working its magic (about 30 mins before it finishes) soak in a bowl of cold water the pasta you are using. It will remove the starch and transform it into fresh pasta. Then warm up in the microwave for 2 mins with a little butter and seasoning.

  • When the slow cooker is done, stir and then load the quorn Bolognese over the spaghetti.

Swaps. If you would like a low carb alternative, I recommend serving over our microwave spaghetti squash instead.
