Slow Cooker Chicken Wings
I was a late developer to the honey, garlic, and soy flavour trio. In fact, it was moving into our first home in Portugal that made me into a honey addict and a slow cooker chicken wings super fan.
We were just moving in, and our elderly neighbour gifted us a jar of homemade honey. I had never had any honey before, and I was soon dipping a spoon into the jar wondering what all the fuss was about with honey.
Oh my god.
In the same tone as Janice from Friends.
It was sweet, it was amazing, and I wanted to eat it with everything.
I had also brought my slow cooker with me from England, and it was much smaller compared to the slow cookers most families have and yet it was perfect for mixing up honey, garlic, soy sauce and Chinese five spice for making the best ever Asian inspired slow cooker chicken wings.
It became a Milner Saturday night supper tradition.
With one slow cooker with wings in it, another with our favourite slow cooker Asian pulled pork and then our air fryer cobb salad.
Then Sofia got a little older and fell head over heels in love with chicken wings and now when we eat out, she is the first to reach across the table for some chicken wings.
This family tradition started of course, back in 2015 when we moved house and now we have gone full circle, and moved back to England got a much bigger slow cooker and still love to make chicken wings on slow and still have a spoon of honey as we make them!
Can You Cook Chicken Wings In A Slow Cooker?
Yes, you can. Cooking slow cooker wings is one of my favourite and one of the first things that I ever cooked in the slow cooker.
Make slow cooker wings once, and you will be wanting to eat them a LOT and turn them into your own family tradition.
Cooking Frozen Chicken Wings In Slow Cooker
Now cooking slow cooker chicken wings from frozen is an absolute NO NO. This is because you need a certain temperature when cooking chicken in the slow cooker and from frozen will not achieve this.
I recommend you read: can you cook frozen chicken in slow cooker which goes into much more detail about it.
If your chicken wings are frozen, I recommend soaking them in some water in the sink for an hour, or defrosting them using the air fryer or the instant pot or the microwave.
Do You Have To Use Liquid In A Slow Cooker For Chicken?
No, its not essential to use liquid in the slow cooker when cooking chicken. Though of course, it depends what type of chicken you are cooking in the slow cooker.
For example, a casserole, a stew, or a soup will need liquid in the slow cooker.
But for chicken wings, chicken drumsticks, roast chicken etc it is not essential. In fact, if you check out our slow cooker whole chicken you will notice that no liquid has been added.
Is It Better To Cook Chicken On High Or Low In Crockpot?
It doesn’t make any difference to the chicken wings, if you cook them on high or on low. I have done both and have found preference comes to when I want to put the chicken wings on and when I plan to eat.
Normally I will turn the slow cooker on at about 2pm for dinner at 6pm. That means a high cook on the slow cooker is ideal for me.
But if you have plans for super bowl slow cooker wings and are out at work all day, then a slow cook on low would be better for you.
Easy Slow Cooker Chicken Wings Recipe Variations
Slow cooker wings are incredibly versatile and there are so many different slow cooker wing variations you could do.
Whilst honey garlic is my FAVOURITE here are a few other ideas:
- Slow Cooker Asian Wings
- Slow Cooker BBQ Wings
- Slow Cooker Buffalo Wings
- Slow Cooker Hot Wings
- Slow Cooker Sweet Chilli Chicken Wings
- Slow Cooker Teriyaki Chicken Wings
What is amazing about these variations is that it can be all about the sauce you use on your wings.
You can cook teriyaki chicken wings for example, just by swapping our marinade for teriyaki sauce. Then the same for buffalo, the same for BBQ and so on.
Just think about your favourite method for slow cooker marinated chicken wings and you are all set!
Slow Cooker Chicken Wings Dry Rub
If you want chicken wings that are free of sauce, then chicken wings with a dry rub, may be right up your street.
Instead of a wet marinade, marinate your chicken wings in a dry rub and then cook in a foil packet inside your slow cooker.
Dry rub with foil is better because it will stop your wings from going dry.
Super Bowl Slow Cooker Wings
If it’s the Super Bowl or game day and you want some chicken wings, then you can follow any of these recipes.
And also remember, you can keep your slow cooker on low, and then it will keep the wings warm for you, for when you are into the football and forget about your wings.
Slow Cooker Chicken Wings Recipe Ingredients
Chicken – To get started with the ingredients its all about the wings. You can go with cheap supermarket wings or step it up a level and use Butcher Box. They offer a lot of great quality meat at a great price.
Marinade – Because we are making slow cooker sticky chicken wings, you will want a marinade of your choice. I am going with honey, garlic puree, ginger puree and soy for making my marinade with, but you can use a jar of sauce if you prefer.
Seasoning – For seasoning we used salt, pepper, Chinese five spice and oriental spice.
Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this slow cooker chicken wings recipe, it has just been our Crockpot. We have this one and it does an amazing job and is also ideal for sauteing too.
How To Cook Wings In Slow Cooker?
- Prep. The first step is to get your marinade and seasoning ingredients together and load them into the slow cooker. Give them a mix and they are ready for the wings.
- Wings. Add in your chicken wings and mix with your hands.
- Cook. Slow cook until you have tender wings.
- Load. Once the chicken wings are done, clear out your liquid from the slow cooker pot and replace with more marinade and toss before serving.
How Long To Cook Chicken Wings In Slow Cooker?
I recommend four hours on high for perfectly fall off the bone slow cooker wings. However, if you prefer slow cooker wings that are not fall off the bone, but are just cooked, then you can opt for three hours.
