Slimming World Butter Chicken
I remember in my teens my parents taking me out for a weeknight dinner at our local Indian restaurant. If my mum was too tired to cook dinner and wanted a break, then I would quickly put on a pretty dress, add some lipstick and we would head out for a curry.
I always called it my night off from Slimming World.
That is because my favourite Indian restaurant food would be off the Slimming World scale.
That is because I wanted to eat:
- Onion Bhajis
- Butter Chicken
- Garlic Naan Bread
- Chips
- Saag Aloo
Then after this, I would finish up what my parents failed to finish because I loved Indian food that much.
This was back in the mid 90’s and there was never much talk about kitchen gadgets then or using the slow cooker to make a healthier butter chicken.
Now when I have a craving for a curry I will instead make:
And then make slimming world butter chicken in the slow cooker.
Obviously, there is no actual butter in the slow cooker and instead we are using hidden vegetables to make the creamy texture. It is also makes it ideal for SP Days.
That is because you have the hidden vegetables as your slimming world speed foods and then chicken for your lean protein.
Or if you are looking for a Weight Watchers butter chicken you will be pleased to read that it is also a zero point meal on the blue plan.
What’s Butter Chicken?
Butter chicken curry or murg makhani is an Indian curry of chicken breast in a creamy sauce. It traditionally has spiced tomato, butter, and a cream sauce. Though of course today’s version is what I recommend if you are looking for a healthy butter chicken.
Can Butter Chicken Be Made Without Cream?
Yes it can. You can use many ingredients other than cream that will create a fake butter chicken creamy texture.
Or as many of my readers like to call it Slimming World No Butter Chicken.
What Can You Use Instead Of Cream In Butter Chicken?
Anything that will produce one of those heavenly creamy curry sauces.
This could be:
- Pureed Root Vegetables
- Quark
- Fat Free Greek Yoghurt
- Light Philadelphia Cream Cheese
Ingredients For A Slimming World Chicken Curry
From what I have already said, I am sure you are expecting some interesting hidden vegetables and a few surprises along the way.
Well firstly there is the creamy curry sauce that we are using in our butter chicken which involves:
- Butternut Squash
- Carrots
- Onion
Just three incredibly simple ingredients that create a wonderful hidden vegetables style butter chicken sauce.
Though what you can do instead is swap carrots for diced tomatoes and then create a more authentic butter chicken. But when you do so your sauce will not be as creamy, and I prefer mine with carrots.
Beyond these ingredients which you can make ahead thanks to our soup maker curry sauce, you just need seasonings and chicken.
I recommend you use chicken breast. It is easier to place in the slow cooker without cooking too quick, is lean and ideal for SP days and best of all is cheap for a quick weeknight dinner.
The seasonings we recommend in a butter chicken include ginger, garlic, garam masala, curry powder, turmeric, paprika and if you like your butter chicken spicy, then you can add in some chilli too.
How To Cook Butter Chicken In Slow Cooker?
Cooking slimming world butter chicken in the slow cooker is one of the EASIEST EVER healthy recipes. But wait, we have two different ways that you make it and one involves making it ahead.
Method 1 – dump your butter chicken ingredients together in the slow cooker:
- Load vegetables into the slow cooker.
- Place seasoned chicken breasts on top.
- Slow cook + chop chicken and blend vegetables.
- Stir in chicken breast and serve.
Method 2 – dump 3 ingredients in your slow cooker and cook:
- Place seasoned chicken breasts in the slow cooker.
- Pour over soup maker curry sauce.
- Slow cook + dice chicken + stir + serve.
Either method works great for making a homemade slimming world butter chicken in the slow cooker. Its just about what you prefer. Though I love that you can balance chicken breasts over the vegetables and see the meal come together.
Pulled Chicken Curry Vs Diced Chicken Curry
I love that you can slow cook your chicken breasts, then shred the chicken and stir into your creamy curry sauce.
However, you might prefer your chicken curry with diced chicken. If this is you, reduce the cook time by an hour so that the chicken can be diced without falling apart.
Here is our chicken breast being chopped:
Note, that chicken is beautifully tender in the slow cooker and it takes a lot of will power not to try it and not eat it all there and then.
Can Butter Chicken Be Frozen?
Yes it can. What I recommend you do is wait until the butter chicken is cool, load into freezer containers and then freeze until you want it.
Though note, you can not cook frozen chicken in the slow cooker. So when you do want to eat it your leftovers, thaw fully before cooking on low for 3 hours in the slow cooker. Or just use the microwave for a quick reheat.

Would you know how much a serving is ? Example : one cup
Hi Terri,
The calories are worked out on 100g serving how much this is in cups i am not sure. But all calories are an estimate as we use software to work them out so just use them as a guide 🙂
Is it mixed spice you use as that’s for cake in the U.K. or all spice
Hi Sarah,
Yes it is mixed spice we used not all spice 🙂
Hi Rachael,
No liquid required. The tomatoes carry a lot of liquid on their own so it is not necessary to add liquid.
And yes you can sub for cherry tomatoes.
Kind regards

Hi I’m was planning on making this tomorrow, I want to pop everything in slow cooker and leave for work for 7 hours. Would this be ok? I wouldn’t be able to blend anything after couple hours?
Hi Natasha,
Yes you can do this and blend it when you get home. Just make sure you cook it on low.
Kind regards
