Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges

You probably want to know what the story is behind these air fryer sweet potato wedges.

After all, us Milner’s have been air frying for a decade and you probably want to know when we started this air fryer trend.

Well, before we got hooked on sweet potato wedges in the air fryer, it would have started with our crispy air fryer potato wedges that are made with white potatoes.

Always made with extra virgin olive oil and tossed in cajun seasoning.

Something that we have cooked for such a long time and just makes that great side dish for dinner.

Usually in the Milner house we will have a dining table full of help yourself food. Such as instant pot frozen chicken wings, instant pot frozen ribs and usually a cob salad too.

Though there will be an argument over who gets the last of the potato wedges.

Out of all the air fryer potatoes, Dominic will always mention how the potato wedges are his favourite and ask me to make them for a Saturday night supper.

So, when we started Recipe This back in late 2015, the first recipe we ever published was our potato wedges. Though they have been updated a few times since then.

Air fryer sweet potato wedges is just a variation of our favourite white potato wedges. For those times when we have sweet potatoes in the pantry and just fancy a change. Just as yummy and perfect if you follow Paleo and want a lower carb alternative.

Can You Eat The Skin On Sweet Potato Wedges?

Absolutely! Just like a white potato the skin on a sweet potato can also be eaten. Sweet potato skin tastes good, though doesn’t get as crispy as white potato skin.

Though, don’t let that put you off as sweet potato skin is still yummy and I would recommend making skin on sweet potato wedges.

Why Are My Sweet Potato Wedges Not Crispy?

This is because the skin is lacking oil and it is preventing the sweet potatoes from becoming crispy.

You can solve this problem with a spray bottle. Fill a spray bottle with extra virgin olive oil and then spray some of the oil over the sweet potato wedges.

Just do this for the last 3 minutes of cooking if you feel the sweet potato wedges are not crispy enough.

Seasoned Potato Wedges In Air Fryer

Another way to improve on how crispy your sweet potato wedges are is to season them before cooking.

Then your sweet potato wedges will be similar to the delicious potato wedges that you get to buy at KFC.

What you do is load your sweet potato wedges into a bowl with your oil and seasonings and rub the seasoning into the potatoes.

It then sticks to the potatoes as they cook, and you have that wonderfully crispy breading texture to your potato wedges once they have been cooked in the air fryer.

Notes

Seasonings. You can mix and match your seasonings depending on what you are serving with your sweet potato wedges. We will usually use cajun and paprika so that we have sweet potato wedges that are similar to KFC. But you can use whatever you like.
Shake. I recommend you shake the wedges when you change the cooking temperature. This is because the sweet potato wedges can stick together, and it will stop them from getting crispy.

  1. a question.. i note you often air fry various things in 2 stages eg say so many minutes at 160c then finish off for say 5mins at 200. why is this better than 100% at one temp? note., i always preheat for 3 mins.. i use Ninja Max

    thnks

    Frank

    1. Hi Frank,

We use 2 stages because the air fryer cooks food from above so we use a lower temp to make sure the food is cooked in the middle and then the higher temp to crisp the food to our liking, otherwise when we first started using the air fryer we found that some foods were still raw in the middle but cooked on the top, hope this answers your question 🙂

  2. 5 stars
mine took ages to cook and realized your pictures are too good and they really are not that big, i cut my next batch down and they were perfect and tasted great.

  3. 5 stars
your recipe worked perfectly and my hubby and kids loved these and the air fryer cooks them perfectly better than a traditional deep fat fryer.
