I am a HUGE movie addict and one of my favourite actors is Tom Hanks. On a Sunday Dominic calls it Tom Hanks day just because I always manage to squeeze in at least 2 Tom Hanks movies every Sunday.

My favourite Tom Hanks movies are The Green Mile, Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, Philadelphia and Castaway.

I love a lot more than those, but if I had to choose just 5 those would be it.

One that gets the most viewings in our home is Forrest Gump. It was released when I was 12 years old and it gave me a wonderful child like history lesson on the United States.

In school we were being educated about World War 2 and other British historical events and I don’t think a single kid in our school knew about the key historical events mentioned in the movie.

One part of Forrest Gump that I love is Bumba Gump talking about all the different ways that you can eat shrimp. Many of which, I still have not tried. Not good when you live in a house with anti-shrimp husband!

With my love of shrimp as my inspiration and at the request of several readers, we are kickstarting our 2020 shrimp calendar with some air fryer frozen tempura shrimp! With many more shrimp recipes coming soon!

Can You Air Fry Shrimp Tempura?

Absolutely! When you air fry shrimp tempura using your air fryer basket it cooks just as good as it would in a deep fat fryer, it not better.

There is no mess in the air fryer basket, and it comes out so crispy you would think it had been shallow fried.

Can You Air Fry Tempura Batter?

Absolutely! Whether you have used your tempura batter for shrimp, prawns, chicken, vegetables, other fish or other meat, it still cooks wonderfully in the air fryer.

If you have an overly wet batter, I recommend making an air fryer baking mat or using the air fryer grill pan option.

As otherwise you could end up with an excessively dirty air fryer to clean.

Frozen Tempura Shrimp In The Air Fryer

When you cook frozen tempura shrimp in the air fryer you can use any brand of tempura shrimp that you like.

You can use a popular brand like Seapak, or use an own supermarket brand. The frozen tempura shrimp that we are using is our local supermarket here in Portugal as we can’t source any of the US brands.

Air Fryer Prawn Tempura

Here in Europe we don’t use the word shrimp, instead it is prawns. In fact, the first time I ever heard the word “shrimp” would have been when we first watched Forrest Gump.

To us Brits you had small prawns, or king prawns and are very much like shrimp but ours tend to be smaller than the American equivalent.

If you notice in the picture our air fryer frozen tempura shrimp is called prawn tempura. But it is still the same food, just with a different name from the other side of the ocean.

What Ingredients & Gadgets Go Into Air Fryer Frozen Shrimp Tempura?

Air Fryer Frozen Tempura Shrimp Ingredients

There is not much to cooking air fryer frozen tempura shrimp.

Grab your favourite frozen tempura shrimp box from your freezer ready to cook them in the air fryer.

No need to defrost them first, you can cook tempura shrimp in the air fryer when they are frozen solid.

When we cooked our frozen tempura shrimp in the air fryer, it was the first time our daughter Sofia had tried them.

As a shrimp loving finger food addict, they never made their way to the dining table. She ate them in the kitchen, with her mum helping her!

As well as your frozen shrimp tempura you need a good air fryer. We have the Philips Air Fryer XL, Philips Air Fryer XXL and the Power Air Fryer Oven in our house. But any good air fryer that has a decent basket space is perfect.

That is because you don’t want to overcrowd the basket.

How Long To Air Fry Tempura Shrimp?

Because frozen tempura shrimp in the air fryer are much bigger compared to other frozen food, we have cooked they need a little longer.

I recommend cooking air fryer tempura shrimp for 10 minutes on a medium heat.

Air Fryer Frozen Tempura Shrimp Ingredients:

  • Remove your frozen tempura shrimp from the packaging, carefully discarding any loose pieces of tempura batter.
  • Place your tempura shrimp into the air fryer. Though make sure they are not overcrowded and there is room for them to cook.
  • Spray the tops of your frozen tempura shrimp with olive oil.
  • Set the temperature to 180c/360f and the time for 10 minutes.
  • When it beeps serve with your favourite sides.

By spraying the tops of the tempura shrimp with olive oil it helps them remain moist and gives a golden glow to your tempura shrimp. Well worth doing.
I cooked 12 frozen shrimp tempuras at once in my air fryer basket. If you have a bigger air fryer or a smaller air fryer, adjust depending on how many you can cook at once. Though you don’t want them to be on top of each other.
