Air Fried Fish And Chips

Fish and chips in the air fryer was one of the first things we cooked, and they were delicious. Crispy breaded fish, perfectly cooked chips and a craving fixed.

Back then, we lived in Portugal and there was hardly any fish and chips options and those that were there, were awful.

So, when you craved British fish and chips you made them in the air fryer.

But whilst we were in Portugal, we did have a supermarket selling Iceland products. We jumped at the chance to try frozen fish and chips in the air fryer, and they were a huge success.

Today, I wanted to share with you how to cook your favourite frozen fish and chips using your air fryer.

Yes, you sure can cook fish from frozen. I have cooked fish many times from frozen across different kitchen gadgets, though much prefer frozen fish cooked in the air fryer.

Can You Cook Frozen Battered Fish In An Air Fryer?

Yes, you sure can cook frozen battered fish in the air fryer. Whilst thawed battered fish is a bad idea in the air fryer because the batter falls right off, doing so from frozen slow cooks it and results in perfect results. Though if you would rather, you can cook air fryer battered fish and chips together following this recipe.

Can You Cook Fish & Chips Together In Air Fryer?

Yes, you can cook air fryer frozen fish and chips together. They are delicious and if you prefer, you can add in some mushy peas or some gravy too and have it like you would at a fish and chips shop.

How Do You Cook Frozen Fish & Chips In An Air Fryer?

There are 2 ways that you can cook frozen fish and chips in the air fryer. If you have a dual such as this Ninja Dual, you may prefer a drawer for the frozen fish and then a drawer for the frozen chips and then you can match the drawers.

Plan B which is perfect if you have a basket style air fryer, is to cook both the frozen fish and chips together using our air fryer cooking guide and have the fish sat on top of the chips.

Fish & Chips Air Fryer Ingredients

Fish & Chips Air Fryer Ingredients

Fish โ€“ You can do frozen breaded fish in air fryer or you can opt for battered. It just depends to what you have in. Battered will always taste better!

Chips โ€“ Then for the chips, we love the frozen gastro chips, they taste the best and are so good in the air fryer. But you can use any. Just remember to adjust the cooking time if you are cooking skinny fries as they wont need as long a cooking time.

Sides โ€“ Then for sides you can keep your air fried fish and chips as they are. Or add your usual favourites such as mushy peas, gravy, curry sauce or why not do some air fryer part baked bread rolls.

Can You Recommend An Air Fryer?

I often get asked which air fryers I recommend and which one I use. In 95% of our air fryer recipes, we use either the Philips Air Fryer XL or the Cosori XL because they are the best ones, we have found out of many air fryers we have tried over the years. You can click on the links above and read up on them. But if you would rather have a dual air fryer we recommend this Ninja Dual (make sure you order the right one as not all are good) or the Philips Dual.

How To Cook Frozen Fish & Chips In Air Fryer?

air-fryer-fish-and-chips-step-by-step
  • Load. Start by adding the chips to your air fryer basket. Spread them out so that they become the bottom layer of your fish and chip supper. Next add a couple of frozen fish fillets (battered or breaded) to the top of the chips.
  • Cook. Set the temperature to 180c/360f and the cooking time to 25 minutes.
  • Halfway. When the air fryer is halfway through cooking the fish and chips, turn the fish over with tongs and give the chips a shake, this will help with the crispy texture.
  • Crispy. If when the air fryer beeps the fish is not crispy enough, spray the tops with olive oil spray and air fry for an extra 3 minutes at 200c/400f.

How Long To Air Fry Frozen Fish & Chips?

If you are cooking frozen fish and chips together according to The Air Fryer Cooking Guide it is JUST 25 minutes with a flip of the fish halfway through. However, this time and temp is the perfect science for cooking them both together, what about separately?

  • How long do you cook frozen fish in the air fryer? The air fryer cooking time for frozen fish on its own is 15 minutes at 180c/360f.
  • How long to cook frozen chips in the air fryer? This depends on the thickness of the chips. But typical steak style chips that you would get from the chippy would be 21 minutes at 180c/360f.

For the best fish and chips in air fryer, we recommend that you shake the chips, when you flip over the fish and also add some extra virgin olive oil spray to both the fish and the chips at the same time.

Everything turned out perfect. When we are having thicker breaded filets like Pollock or Cod with Steak Fries I cook them 10min, shake/turn, and then 10 more. Awesome, thanks.

That “small seaside town in the North of England” wouldn’t happen to have been Whitby, would it? I had the best fish and chips of my life when we visited there on a trip to the UK. So fresh and so perfect! It was in a little place across the harbor from the abbey. Though I suppose any seaside town would do it brilliantly.

Thanks for this recipe! It’s a great solution! I used tilapia in a Ninja Foodi, but I look forward to trying other things as well.

    • Hi Roxane,

We know exactly where you are talking about as that is one of favourite places to get fish and chips from a dn we usually grab them and then drive up to the North Yorkshire Moors and sit in the country side and eat them, they were perfect.

The actual town we are talking about is called Bridlington about 20 miles south of Whitby where we used to live and we will be moving back over there next year, the hubby cannot wait for some decent fish and chips ๐Ÿ˜‰

      Thank you very much!

  3. Hi, how would you change the cook time if you have defrosted haddock and fresh potatoes not frozen? I have a Philips XXL brand new that Iโ€™m dying to use. Thanks!

    • Hi Kristan,

Sorry i am late with my reply. We have the Philips XXL now and the one thing we keep saying is it cooks things alot quicker because of its size. So i would half cook the fries depending on how many people you are cooking for and with them been fresh potatoes i would give them 10 minutes then add the fish if you are cooking them together for a further 8 minutes.

The problem been when shaking the fries you would shake the fish as well so best to turn the fish after 4 minutes and turn the fries over with a spoon.

Hope this helps and you happy cooking with your new air fryer ๐Ÿ™‚
