Whole Butternut Squash In Slow Cooker

Whole butternut squash in the slow cooker became a thing for me long before we started Recipe This and was something, we loaded into the oven many years ago after seeing it on a Jamie Oliver cookery show.

In fact, when we started cooking whole butternut squash, we had our old slow cooker and it was a tiny one. I still have it now and use it as a food warmer mainly at Christmas.

It was given to us in 2004 and she owned it for 25 years before she gave it to us. We even brought it with us from England to Portugal when we moved here back in 2008.

The problem was, with the slow cooker being so small it barely fitted a butternut squash in it.

We would then wait until butternut squash was out of season and then place the tiny butternut squash in the slow cooker and it would fit.

Fast forward to 2019 and it feels like we finally own a slow cooker that is big enough for our addiction to whole butternut squash!

Jamie Oliver Butternut Squash

One question that food bloggers or people that like cooking get asked is who inspired you and what got you started in your cooking journey.

I always say my husband and Jamie Oliver. Aged 18 and moving in with my boyfriend, I could only cook a handful of things.

I could bake well but my cooking recipe list was limited. I lacked direction in the kitchen and for someone to show me how to cook.

I learnt from my boyfriend who was working as a chef back then, who is now my husband of more than 17 years.

He is also the advisor here on Recipe This for whenever our readers have cooking problems.

As well as learning from my husband I watched a lot of Jamie Oliver. Back then it was called Naked Chef and he showed people how to cook the basics. I bought all his books and have followed him ever since.

The hubby always showed little interest when I watched yet another cookery show. But when he saw Jamie Oliver baking butternut squash in the oven it had his attention.

The idea that you can throw a butternut squash in the oven and let it back like a baked potato was amazing and a new recipe we became obsessed with.

After a few tries we converted it to the slow cooker, which is what I am sharing with you today. Or if you prefer we also have our instant pot butternut squash which is much faster.

Can Butternut Squash Go In Slow Cooker?

Yes it can and butternut squash cooks perfectly in the slow cooker. But in many oven baked versions of whole butternut squash they will load it in whole.

However, its best to half your butternut squash for the slow cooker so that it fits and is perfectly cooked.

Easy Slow Cooker Butternut Squash

There are some things that I hate doing in the kitchen and because I married a chef, its just easier for me to ask the lovely hubby to do it for me.

I hate to fry eggs because I am partially sighted and end up going too close and getting spat at. I also hate sharpening knives just because I am too lazy and its easier for Dominic to do it when he does his.

I also hate prepping butternut squash and pumpkin.

He will prep the squash for me, so I don’t have to.

But follow our recipe for easy slow cooker butternut squash and there is no prep. The butternut squash is halved, and you don’t have to peel and dice a butternut squash and remove the seeds.
