Reheating Prime Rib
I am very lucky…I married a carvery chef and because of this I have a guy that can cook the best ever roasting meats and can tell me how to make my roast dinners better.
This means that over the years we have perfected and perfected our roast dinners to get them spot on.
There is never dry turkey in the Milner house and whilst Dominic works his magic on the meat, I will be in charge of the sides and our kids will be very lucky kids when it has all been served.
When I mentioned to Dominic my idea of a prime rib week he was over the moon. It is one of his favourite cuts of meat, he loves how flavoursome it is and it brings back memories of his chef days, well before he was your chef!
I watched him cut up a 4 rib of beef and make into 2 boneless 2 ribs and then we cooked instant pot prime rib and air fryer prime rib.
But the best bit was yet to come and that was making the leftovers into amazing recipes. This included making a prime rib hash and leftover prime rib stroganoff.
Today though, I wanted to share with you Dominic’s expertise when it comes to reheating prime rib, so that you can reheat your own at home.
Plus, as well as our free newsletter, we also have a free air fryer mini course. It is ideal for air fryer beginners or those that want to get more confident with their air fryer. The free course runs for 5 days with a new lesson delivered each day to your inbox.
Can You Reheat Prime Rib?
Yes, you sure can! Reheated prime rib is delicious, and you don’t want to waste such a superior cut of roast beef.
For me, the best thing about cooking prime rib, is enjoying the leftovers for a couple of days afterwards.
Though, of course there are many different ways to do it and we will be showing you the best way to reheat prime rib.
How Do Restaurants Reheat Prime Rib?
This is what I find the most interesting. Dominic’s kitchen knowledge and the stories he shares with me, of how the professionals do things.
When I asked him, how do restaurants reheat prime rib? I was rather surprised by his answer.
Chef Dom told me that rib roast from the carvery, would be transferred from the carvery area to the industrial slow cooker. And then it would remain in the slow cooker from after lunch, to then serve dinner later that day.
Which means it was never reheated it was just keeping its internal temperature.
He said, if there was any leftover rib after dinner, it would be stored in the fridge and reheated the next day, usually in the slow cooker so that it remains tender.
BUT the next day with what is left, is promoted on the restaurant menu for beef sandwiches. Everyone loves the Monday beef sandwiches meal deal in the pubs and restaurants in the UK, using the leftover beef from the day before.
Of course, this is what the kitchen staff would eat at their own mealtimes, and it was always a perk of working in a kitchen.
Best Way To Reheat Prime Rib
Okay so you had it direct from the chef, that restaurants use large slow cooker ovens to reheat their prime rib or take the meat from the hot plates and transfer them there to keep the temperature.
But what about in the real world without big slow cookers?
The best way to reheat prime rib…. drum roll please….is the air fryer.
It does the best job out of the different kitchen gadgets. It adds a lovely crisp to it like grilling does, it doesn’t make it rubbery like the microwave and its much faster than the slow cooker.
However, if you are hosting a party and plan to eat the beef throughout the idea, then use your slow cooker and have it on keep warm.
Reheating Prime Rib For Sandwiches
This is the best thing about reheating prime rib in the air fryer and that is the warm beef sandwiches. Whether you are into beef sandwiches with a sauce, or just want them as they are, it’s a simple method to follow.
You reheat prime rib slices in the air fryer and then you can also warm up your bread rolls at the same time. Or maybe make a batch of our air fryer pull apart bread rolls first and then serve your warmed up rib roast slices into your warm just cooked bread rolls.
Reheat Prime Rib Air Fryer Ingredients
Leftovers – We had a plate of leftover prime rib and it made three leftover recipes with it. Then after we had made three recipes, we used the last of it to make warm beef sandwiches. If making your own at home, I recommend medium slices for best results, too thin and it will overcook.
Rolls – You could of course warm up prime rib slices for a salad, but I am all about yummy prime rib sandwiches. I recommend that you match your rib roast leftovers with some amazing bread rolls.
Seasoning – When roast beef is left in the fridge it can lose its salt as it rests. I recommend before air frying that you season the beef with a little salt and pepper.
Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this recipe for reheating prime rib, it has just been our Philips Air Fryer XL. We have this one and its wonderful for many types of air fryer leftovers.
Talking about air fryer leftovers, here are a few other amazing foods you can reheat in the air fryer:
- Reheat Fries In Air Fryer
- Reheat Wings In Air Fryer
- Reheat Onion Rings In Air Fryer
- Reheat Steak In Air Fryer
- Reheat Fish Fillets In Air Fryer
- Reheat Meatloaf In Air Fryer
How To Reheat Prime Rib In Air Fryer?
- Plan. Long before you are reheating your prime rib in the air fryer, think about what you plan to do after eating your main prime rib roast dinner. For example, make sure your prime rib is sliced ready for reheating and is covered in foil so that it doesn’t dry out.
- Ready. When you are ready to reheat your prime rib, add slices to the air fryer basket and make sure they are seasoned with salt and pepper.
- Cook. Air fry for 3 minutes and then serve in warm bread rolls.
How Do You Reheat Prime Rib Without Overcooking It?
The secret to avoiding overcooking your prime rib, is all about the temperature you cook it at, and that you use a kitchen gadget that doesn’t get too hot, too quick.
For example, I wouldn’t recommend reheating prime rib in the microwave, because it is too powerful and overcooks the prime rib.
What Temp To Reheat Prime Rib?
I recommend a max temperature for reheating prime rib in the air fryer of 160c/320f. That is because if you go with a higher temperature, it is like you are continuing to cook the prime rib rather than reheating it.
How To Reheat Prime Rib & Keep It Rare?
Let’s say you want to reheat prime rib and keep it rare. You wouldn’t have originally cooked it at above 160c/320f or it would have cooked to a medium.
You would have cooked it at about 140c, therefore, to reheat the prime rib and keep it so that its still rare, you need to go down a temperature level. So, you would reheat at 120c/250f.
That same rule applies if you reheat medium rare prime rib. If you cooked it originally at 160c then you will want to reheat at 140c.
