Minced Beef Hotpot

I love my slow cooker Lancashire hotpot and its one of my favourite lazy Sunday dinners that I love to make in the Milner kitchen.

But I often get asked, what is the poor man’s equivalent? If you can not afford diced lamb to make a lamb hotpot what do you make instead?

And I always say the same.

A minced beef hotpot.

It’s a similar method of cooking, its just as easy to prep and then leave to cook and it makes amazing leftovers.

Plus, lamb can be rather fatty and if you are looking for something healthier you can make a mince hotpot instead and use 5% fat mince.

Today I am going to be sharing with you my fast prep mince hotpot, that you can serve for your next slow cooker dinner for you and your family. As well as my cheats method for perfect crispy sliced potatoes.

What Is A Minced Beef Hotpot?

For those of you outside of the UK, you are likely to not have heard of a mince hotpot and wondering what on earth one is.

Well, a mince hotpot, is simply ground beef that is cooked in a similar way to the cottage pie filling and then served with sliced potatoes over. So, imagine making a cottage pie and swapping mash for potato slices.

Whilst its official name is a minced beef hotpot it is also known as minced beef hot pot (hot pot two words), mince and potato hotpot, mince and sliced potato bake, minced beef casserole or even a minced beef cobbler.

No matter what you call it, you will fall in love with the simplicity and taste of this old school British one pot dish.

Can You Use A Slow Cooker For Hotpot?

Yes, you can. In fact cooking a hotpot in the slow cooker is ideal, because you can dump in the ingredients and come back later to perfectly cooked mince.

You can then use your air fryer for air fryer sliced potatoes and then place them over your mince.

By combining the talents of the slow cooker and the air fryer, you have a very easy prep mince hotpot slow cooker recipe.

Is It OK To Put Raw Mince In A Slow Cooker?

Yes, it is perfectly safe to put raw mince in the slow cooker, but I prefer not to. I would much rather brown the mince first in the slow cooker on the stovetop. That way you can get rid of any excess fat and add flavour to your slow cooker before adding in the rest of the ingredients.

Mince – I recommend you use 5% fat lean minced beef for the best mince hotpot. It stops the hotpot from being overly fatty and you can also reduce the fat before finishing cooking.

Veggies – You can mix and match root vegetables and go with what you already have in. I used carrots, celery, parsnips, and onion.

Peas – I also recommend adding in frozen peas once the minced beef is cooked as it really makes the hotpot fill you up and gives it some colour. I usually stir in a cup of frozen peas from the freezer.

Potatoes – For the best slow cooker mince and potatoes, its all about the sliced potatoes on top. I recommend some medium/large potatoes that you can thinly slice, that I can then cook in the air fryer and then add to the top of the mince.

Extras – I also recommend adding red wine, tomato puree, Worcester sauce and some garlic as it adds such a delicious rich flavour to your mince beef slow cooker casserole.

Seasoning – To compliment your slow cooker minced beef and potatoes I recommend salt, pepper, parsley. And thyme.

To cook mince in the slow cooker, it will often be done within 2 hours. It depends if you have browned the mince first, with the onions like we have done, as this will speed up the process.

But to get everything cooked, such as the carrots, parsnips etc you will need 4 hours on high.

Hotpot With Mince Tips & Tricks

  • If you can brown the mince first. It will make the mince more flavoursome. I recommend a slow cooker with a pot that can be used on the stovetop (if you can).
  • Cook the sliced potatoes first in the air fryer. Only a tiny bit of extra virgin olive oil is required and then you don’t need to add butter or place your hotpot in the oven.
  • Tomato puree (also known as tomato paste) as well as Worcester sauce and red wine, give a wonderful rich flavour to your minced beef hotpot.
  • I recommend making frozen veggie cubes. I make them using our instant pot veggie stock recipe and then freeze them in giant ice cube trays. I can then cook it with the mince, and it adds the best flavour.
  • I also add a tablespoon of leftover mashed potatoes and mix it in. It creates a natural thickener of your mince without the need for gravy granules.

Interesting Slow Cooker Trick – Always buy a slow cooker like this Crockpot one that we own. It can go on the stovetop to brown meat and go in the oven.

Can you make ahead your hotpot recipe? Yes, you can. I often do this to save on time. You can also reheat your hotpot in the slow cooker by cooking it on low for two hours.

Can you freeze leftover hotpot? Yes, you sure can. Simply load into a freezer container and freeze once cool.

Carbs. If you would like your minced beef and sliced potatoes to be lower in carbs I recommend you swap white potatoes for sweet potatoes and follow our air fryer sweet potato slices recipe.
