Rice Pudding In Instant Pot

Transport yourself back in time with delicious quick and easy old fashioned rice pudding recipe that is so frugal, yet so tasty at the same time.

That rice pudding made of short grain rice that we all had growing up at school for lunch or that your grandma would make you.

I always remember rice pudding from primary school. When I was between the ages of 7 and 11 it would feature regularly on the lunch menu.

It would be on a rota between the other classics that we all love. There would be the chocolate sponge cake and custard (I am getting hungry just thinking about it), chocolate flan with strawberry custard and not forgetting the spotted dick and custard.

Well, I was over the moon when Dominic suggested we try it out in the Instant Pot. It was the first dessert we ever did when we got our first Instant Pot in 2016 and all these years later it is still a favourite in the Milner house.

Can You Make Rice Pudding In An Instant Pot?

Yes, you can. Though do note, I am married to a chef and they are terrible with portion sizes, so half the recipe if you don’t want to be eating pressure cooker rice pudding for the next few days.

Many of you will be questioning how you make rice pudding in the instant pot, after all, it involves milk. We all know those horror stories of the milk explosions when releasing pressure when cooking with milk.

But don’t worry, as we have made a few adaptions to this instant pot rice pudding recipe so that it doesn’t happen to you.

Easy Instant Pot Rice Pudding

You probably want to know just how easy it is to make rice pudding using your instant pot.

Well, lets break down the rice pudding recipe for a minute:

  • Heating up the ingredients – You need warm milk for rice pudding to come together. We start by heating everything up and getting everything well mixed.
  • Pressure cooking the rice pudding – Next the focus is on pressure cooking your rice pudding so that you have soft yummy rice. You don’t want rice that is undercooked or overcooked and this is about getting the rice cooked perfectly.
  • Natural pressure release – this is the important part as you don’t want a milk explosion and want to allow a full natural pressure release. We found this took 20 minutes for all pressure to be released.

Those are the three main steps to easy instant pot rice pudding. I bet you thought it was more complicated than that, but its very easy.

I also find the ingredients to make rice pudding are ones you have in your pantry already. Remember, for a minute, that rice pudding was originally an recipe enjoyed during the second world war to save money.

Rice Pudding With Jam

Old fashioned rice pudding would not be the same without jam would it? I am sure our grandparent’s generation would be disgusted by the idea of fancy bowls of rice pudding with fruit and cinnamon and would be asking where is the jam?

In the Milner house we always serve our rice pudding with a spoonful of strawberry jam. Though you can mix and match with whatever jam flavour you have in your pantry.

Notes

Butter. To make creamy delicious rice pudding always add butter. It gives it a delicious taste and it is an old fashioned recipe method.
Consistency. If your rice pudding is too thick then add some extra skimmed milk, but as it cools it will get thicker so you shouldn’t need to.
Rice. Instead of rice pudding rice you can use risotto rice as it produces the same style rice pudding. Though avoid long grain rice.

Could you do this “pot in pot” – maybe bring to a boil on the stove, add to a dish, place in the pot, with water of course, and cook it 12 min? We cook our rice pudding for 2-3 hours, stirring every 15-30 min….thot if it could be done in the IP for 12 min, we may just fix it more often!

    • Hi Joanne,

The cooking time might be different if the dish is inside the instant pot on a trivet. I am not too sure how long it would take, if you wanted to try it like you say then taste and see if the rice is cooked after 12 minutes then if it is not ready add more time until it is 🙂

  2. Hi both,
I’m found your web site and advice after doing a G-Search for Instant Pot Rice pudding. I appreciate that this is an older recipe / thread but is this really just for 4 people?

500g rice is usually for about 20 people isn’t it?

Having said that, thanks for all the other information and experiences that you share on here – so many “thank you’s”

    • Hi Mark,

Yes they does look to be enough for 20 people but it all depends on your portion size. We had 3 adults and 2 children but one of the kids was only a few years old at the time, so really did not each much. After serving a standard size portion after it had cooled there really was not alot left in the pot and certainly not enough for another portion, but we love rice pudding so the portions we had might have been bigger than normal 🙂

Brilliant recipe thank you. I had to adapt this to cook in the Ninja Foodi. I halved the quantities but also decreased the sugar to 70g I used 1200ml semi skimmed milk and 250g arborio rice. Low pressure on the Ninja all as your instructions. It was delicious. 4 very generous portions. Superb 😊

  3. Made it today
Was very unsure after adding 2 litres of milk
    Then 500g of rice
It turned out really well, a nice creamy taste.
    BUT:
    I had about 18 portions
I reckon you could cut the recipe by a quarter
Delicious but have enough in the freezer for months
    Best Wishes

    • Hi Alan,

Really happy you enjoyed the rice pudding we love it and it is just the right time of year for a big bowl or 2 of rice pud. Yes you can move the slider in the recipe card and it will auto adjust the ingredients for how many people you want to make it for, we never had any left to freeze but that is a great idea 🙂

  4. Haha – as other people have said, you must *love* rice pudding – that’s over 600ml each! I divided this recipe by 10, and had plently enough for two.

It worked quite nicely, though be careful of overflows if you have a regular pressure-cooker. I used a whole vanilla pod rather than essence (tip put used vanilla pods in a jar of sugar – you can reuse them a few times, and the sugar becomes vanilla sugar).
