Steamed Jam Pudding

I love cooking the classics, especially the desserts using my kitchen gadgets. From air fryer bread and butter pudding to instant pot banoffee pie to slow cooker rice pudding.

For fun and because I love a great dessert, I am doing a 3 part series of pressure cooker steamed puddings.

Yesterday, I shared with you steamed sticky toffee pudding and today it gets even better with the best ever instant pot steamed jam pudding.

Best of all this steamed jam pudding will work with any of your favourite jams. Whether that is instant pot raspberry jam, instant pot strawberry jam, or a jam you bought.

We are using some jam that we purchased from Goathland. If you have not been to the beautiful Yorkshire village of Goathland then note it is where the favourite British TV show Heartbeat was filmed and I love an excuse to visit the place.

I will often head into the village shop and buy some homemade jam as well as some yummy fudge.

Then use the jam up on delicious desserts like this instant pot steamed pudding.

What Is A Steamed Pudding?

A steamed pudding is a traditional English dessert. I remember it from Primary school way back in the 80’s and it was popular long before then.

Also known as a steamed sponge pudding, it’s a dessert that is like a sponge and is steamed instead of baked.

When I think of a traditional steamed pudding, I am thinking of something similar to what I am sharing with you. The difference being that there are many varieties.

You can have a jam sponge pudding, chocolate versions, treacle version, lemon version, a ginger version, and many others.

Can You Make A Steamed Pudding In Advance?

Yes, you can make ahead our steamed jam sponge pudding recipe, or any other similar steamed sponge.

You can make ahead the mixture and then cook it later, or cook the steamed pudding and then later reheat it.

How Do You Steam Pudding In A Pressure Cooker?

Steamed sponge pudding in a pressure cooker is an easy concept once you have tried it.

The idea is that you make your steamed sponge recipe like you normally would and then place it into a greased pudding basin.

Then you add foil tightly to the top of your steam pudding bowl and then its loaded into the pressure cooker.

You then add enough water that covers ¼ of the pudding basin before pressure cooking.

This is very similar to the old school pudding process. Though it is faster, and you don’t have to wait for it over boiling water.

Given the choice I much prefer a pressure cooker steamed pudding.

Steamed Pudding Recipe Ingredients

Steamed Pudding Recipe Ingredients

Jam – The first ingredient to go into your steam pudding bowl is your jam. You can use any flavour of jam, or you can use marmalade or lemon curd.

Sugar – To make steamed jam sponge pudding, you will need some caster sugar. It does the best job at making cakes or sponges and creates the perfect steamed sponge too. I always have a big bag of it in my kitchen cupboard.

Flour – And just like any sponge cake you will need some flour to combine it all together. But unlike many cakes such as our air fryer chocolate cake, only a small portion of flour is needed.

Eggs – You will also need 1 large egg at room temperature to beat into your batter. As well as a small portion of milk to make it creamy.

Butter – There is also a small quantity of butter required and again, much better if it is at room temperature, but of course not essential.

Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this jam steamed pudding recipe it has just been our Instant Pot. We have this one and it’s my favourite and great for desserts and so ridiculously fast for making a steamed pudding.

Plus, we recommend you head over to our instant pot recipes category as we have many electric pressure cooker recipes and have been using instant pots for 5 years.

How To Make Steamed Jam Sponge Pudding?

instant pot steamed jam pudding step by step
  • Batter. Beat sugar and butter into a bowl and then add in the egg and beat until smooth. Then add in the flour and mix gently with a fork. Before finishing with the milk.
  • Grease. Use a little extra virgin olive oil spray to grease your pudding bowls.
  • Wrap. Add jam to the bottom of the pudding bowls. Then load the pudding mixture into the pudding bowls and then tightly wrap in foil. Then lower the pudding bowls onto the trivet inside the instant pot.
  • Cook. Pour enough boiling water to cover up to ¼ of the bottom of the steamer bowl and then place the lid on the instant pot, set the valve to sealing and pressure cook for 25 minutes.
  • Custard. Do a quick pressure release and then after removing from the instant pot, load into bowls with custard.

And I am sure you can see now how simple and quick steamed pudding is to make, especially if you use the instant pot to cook.

Reheating Steamed Sponge Pudding

As mentioned above, you can also reheat your steamed puddings. They will last for up to 3 days (mine never lasts more than an hour!) and then the air fryer or the microwave are fantastic for reheating.

This is our leftover jam pudding that we saved and then reheated the next day in the microwave:

Reheating Steamed Sponge Pudding

When I was making my air fryer lemon drizzle sponge, we had loads leftover and it just went in the microwave with some custard and was delicious.

Jam Sponge Pudding & Custard

PS. Don’t forget the custard to go with your jam sponge pudding. We always have some in the cupboard that we can quickly heat up.

Plus, if you have the sponge with custard, you don’t need to make as much to feed everyone!

Jam Sponge Pudding Tips & Tricks

  • I recommend (if you have one) that you use a trivet with side handles. Then it is so much easier for lifting the steamed pudding in and out of the instant pot.
  • Even though I used the instant pot, this steamed jam sponge recipe will work with any electric pressure cooker.
  • You can take any favourite steamed pudding to the pressure cooker. Just use our cook times and method and mix and match.
  • It is easier if you use room temperature egg and butter.
  • I recommend using a classic steamed pudding bowl. You can also use them for other steamed puddings and even savoury ones in the instant pot.
  • The best way to grease your pudding bowl is to spray with extra virgin olive oil and then sprinkle with flour.

Interesting Instant Pot Trick – Use hot water from the tap when filling up the instant pot. If you don’t it will take forever to warm up all that water and take it to pressure.

Notes

Resting. Once you have released pressure remove the foil and then load the bowl upside down into the container you plan to serve it in. No need to pat the top as it will naturally come out on its own in a perfect shape.
Quantities. One recipe makes enough to half fill one pudding basin. Though this is still a big enough quantity to divide into four and feed four people. Double it and you can do two batches that would feed 8.
Mix. You can also mix up your favourite jam. We used a summer fruits jam from Goathland, but you can use whichever you want.
