Pumpkin Puree

As I write this, I have just dropped the kids off at school as they head back to school for the first time since the summer break. We have a few pretty trees on the way to school and school is just a 8 minute power walk for me, and about 12 minutes with the kids.

The subject got on to fall. They wanted to know when the leaves were going to fall from the trees so that they could kick them and take some home to paint.

Then of course when pumpkins would be in season.

They were excited for the pumpkin and asked why daddy doesn’t like it. Well, I reminded them that pumpkin can often be bland if not seasoned right and that it contains a lot of water.

That is why I have a specific draining method for pumpkin puree and after waving them off, I was excited to get to my laptop after the summer break and share with you this amazing recipe for Instant Pot Pumpkin Puree that I have made every year during pumpkin season since getting my first instant pot.

Why Homemade Pumpkin Puree?

An American friend always told me that I must make my own homemade pumpkin puree. When I asked her why, she informed me that pumpkin puree from a can is not great and is often loaded with butternut squash rather than pumpkin.

I couldn’t get pumpkin in a can so had no choice over this.

But even now when I can get a can of pumpkin puree, I love that when you cook your own in the instant pot (which is ridiculously easy) season it how you want it and control its texture and taste.

Pumpkin Puree For Baby Food

Now this is the true genius of pressure cooker pumpkin. What you can do is pressure cook your pumpkin, strain it (I will show you how) and you have pumpkin baby portions.

They are perfect for when you are weaning your baby and you can freeze it into ice cube trays to have a long term food supply for your babies.

My Obsession With Instant Pot Veggies

This pumpkin puree instant pot recipe is not my first instant pot veggie and I doubt it will be my last.

The first thing we ever cooked in our instant pot, was instant pot broccoli and since then we have cooked more and more different veggies.

Here are a few more veggies to try in the instant pot, once you have mastered our instant pot pumpkin puree:

Plus, we also love our frozen veggies in the instant pot and our favourite is instant pot frozen broccoli, followed by instant pot frozen veggies mix and instant pot frozen corn on the cob.

The reason I am mentioning all these delicious veggies, is that you can learn one in the instant pot and then rinse and repeat and it’s a great skill to learn in the instant pot, especially if you are new to pressure cooking.

Pumpkin Puree Instant Pot Ingredients

Pumpkin – You will want any pumpkin that you have available that you can chop into chunks. Think of it like when you are making mashed potatoes, and that you don’t want the pieces to be too big otherwise they take too long to cook.

Seasoning – The seasoning of your pumpkin depends on whether you are going savoury or sweet. For example, for sweet (i.e. pie making) I recommend cinnamon and nutmeg. Or for a savoury dish I would recommend salt, pepper, and mixed spice.

Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this pumpkin puree instant pot recipe it has just been our Instant Pot. We have this one and it’s my favourite and great for a lot of different instant pot veggie recipes.

We also used our mesh strainer and love our Joseph & Joseph set which includes plenty of bowls as well as the strainer and perfect for the instant pot.

Plus, we recommend you head over to our instant pot recipes category as we have many electric pressure cooker recipes and have been using instant pots for 5 years.

How To Make Pumpkin Puree?

instant pot pumpkin puree step by step
  • Water. Place a cup of water (240ml) in the bottom of your instant pot and then add cubed pumpkin into a steamer basket. Add the steamer basket into the instant pot, and either season for sweet or savoury, or leave plain for baby puree.
  • Cook. Place the lid on the instant pot, set the valve to sealing and pressure cook your pumpkin for 5 minutes, followed by a quick pressure release.
  • Strain. Remove the pumpkin and place it into a mesh strainer with a bowl below. Allow it to sit for at least 10 minutes for the water to drain away. As it drains your pumpkin will go mushy like puree. Then shake the mesh strainer to remove the last of the excess and this will create a pumpkin ball.
  • Done. You now have instant pot pumpkin puree, and it is ready for being used in recipes such as our air fryer pumpkin pie.

And I am sure you can see now how simple and easy it is to cook pumpkin puree in instant pot and why you should be doing the same.
