Instant Pot Black Beans No Soak

I was chatting to a lovely lady on an instant pot Facebook group recently. We were talking about what a big difference the instant pot made to our lives.

What I found interesting is what she loved about the instant pot.

She had that the instant pot made her healthy. Before that she thought nothing of cream of mushroom soup in her meals or using canned beans or canned tomato sauce.

Yet now she was making instant pot mushroom soup for her sauces, was cooking dried black beans and loved a batch of instant pot steel cut oatmeal.

I have to agree totally with her.

Even though I have often avoided processed foods myself, I had to get an instant pot to make yoghurt from scratch, the beans, and my favourite of them all instant pot veggie stock.

But I realised that even though I adore instant pot black beans and cooking beans in the instant pot, outside of our learn your instant pot course, I have never shared how I cook beans in the instant pot.

This week we are going crazy for beans starting with instant pot black beans no soak, which like it sounds requires zero soaking and is perfect for loading into your favourite instant pot meals, for meal prep, for salads, and so much more.

Can You Make Beans In An Instant Pot?

Yes, yes, yes, I want to shout from the rooftops that you most certainly can make beans in the instant pot.

You can go out and buy your dried beans, load them into the instant pot, add stock and liquid and then let the instant pot work its magic.

In fact, making beans such as these instant pot black beans is up there with the best uses of the instant pot, or other brands of electric pressure cookers.

Do I Have To Soak Beans For Instant Pot?

No soaking is required for any dried beans that you are cooking in the instant pot. You load up the beans and they pressure cook in the water and this results in perfect beans that have not needed to be soaked.

Many name the fact that the instant pot can make no soak beans as one of the biggest reasons for their purchase.

Buying Dried Black Beans For The Instant Pot

You can use any local shop for buying of your black beans. I got my black beans from my local refill jar.

It’s a great shop with many beans, lentils, and pasta products. It also has every dried herb and spice you can think of as well as selling soap and even hair conditioner.

Here is its huge collection of beans, rice, pasta, and lentils:

Its also great if you just need a small portion of something obscure for a recipe that you will never use again.

I then fill up one of my favourite plastic containers that I use just for taking to the refill jar and for storing my beans at home in.

Plus, because it is plastic, I don’t have to worry about it breaking on the way back from the shops.

What Is The Ratio Of Black Beans To Water In Instant Pot?

The bean to water ratio in the instant pot is rather interesting. That is because you are cooking black beans in the instant pot with both water and stock.

If you add the water quantity to the stock liquid, then you would need 2.5 cups (600ml) to 2 cups (480ml) of black beams.

Or as I like to think of it, a little more liquid to black beans so that they are covered:

Then after pressure cooking, they will look like this, where all liquid has soaked in the beans:

And if you are wondering why use the stock cube? Then its essential to well flavoured black beans otherwise they are bland and you would need a LOT of salt to make them taste good.

Black Beans Instant Pot Ingredients

Black Beans Instant Pot Ingredients

Beans – For your black beans in the instant pot it starts with some quality dried black beans. I say quality because go cheap and they have lots of broken ones and don’t taste as nice when pressure cooked.

Stock – The second essential ingredient for cooking black beans in the instant pot, is the stock. Please don’t skip this as this is what makes dried black beans taste good. I recommend either our instant pot chicken stock (good if using for mainly meat dishes) or our instant pot veggie stock. Both we make in the instant pot and then freeze for using in recipes like this.

Water – You also want water as well as the stock to balance out the flavour and so that there is enough liquid to go to pressure.

Seasoning – Before adding seasoning to your black beans decide what recipes the black beans are going to be in. Then choose seasoning around that. For example, if it’s for summer pastas I would add oregano or basil. Then salt and pepper works well for a good all round taste.

Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this dried black beans instant pot recipe it has just been our Instant Pot. We have this one and it’s my favourite and great for a lot of dried foods that you want to avoid a soak with.

Quantities. One recipe is 2 cups of black beans, and they will make double when cooked.
Frozen Stock. Your frozen stock sits on top and will defrost as the beans cook, creating a much more flavoursome black beans recipe.
