Air Fryer Turkey Crown

Today is day 3 of our turkey theme at Recipe This. We are showcasing some of the best ways to cook turkey with kitchen gadgets.

We have already showed you how to cook air fryer turkey burgers and an air fryer boneless turkey breast and today is the turn of an air fryer turkey crown.

I know that Christmas and cooking turkey freaks out most people. It’s that masterpiece at Christmas that must be right, never dry and that you then want to enjoy leftovers from and not end up with it in the bin.

One of my readers came to me that is a beginner when it comes to cooking turkey and also a beginner when it comes to cooking with the air fryer.

She mentioned that for Easter she wanted to cook a Bernard Matthews turkey crown that she had got at discount after Christmas.

I was like SNAP I had a frozen one in my freezer too that I had got on a discount. In fact, I had about four of them.

I find Iceland’s Bernard Matthews turkey crowns are ideal for cooking at any time of the year but can be expensive. So, I will buy them in bulk when discounted and save them for later.

I told her, that even though I didn’t plan to publish the recipe yet for air fryer turkey crown, that she could have a copy of the recipe early.

She was thrilled and it was a great success for her.

It also got me thinking how the air fryer is ideal for a Bernard Matthews turkey crown and it takes the worry out of Christmas for good. Or if you like us you buy in bulk, any roast turkey dinner.

What Is A Turkey Crown?

A turkey crown is a British thing. In a nutshell a turkey crown is a turkey breast that is bone in.

Or you might describe a turkey crown to be the best bit of the turkey as the brown meat has been removed. So, no turkey wings, turkey thighs or turkey drumsticks.

If you are in the USA and looking for similar I would compare it to a bone in turkey breast.

Can You Cook A Turkey In An Air Fryer?

Yes, you can. Turkey cooked in the air fryer is AMAZING. You can create a yummy moist turkey thanks to the air fryer, and it works its magic and it doesn’t matter if you have not cooked turkey before.

Though do note, the turkey that you cook in the air fryer is limited to the size of your air fryer. So, a small air fryer will not be big enough for turkey crown. If you want to upgrade your air fryer for one that can cook a turkey, then I recommend this one.

Best Way To Cook A Turkey Crown?

In the air fryer of course. Cooking a turkey in the air fryer is a game changer, and I thoroughly recommend you give it a go.

The turkey is moist and perfectly cooked and the crispy skin is amazing thanks to the air fryer technology.

You can also cook a stuffed turkey crown using the air fryer (that’s the Bernard Matthews one we have) and use our foil trick to stop the stuffing from escaping.

My Iceland Turkey Crown

This is the Iceland Bernard Matthews turkey crown that we are air frying for you today.

Iceland Turkey Crown

As you can see it was originally sold as an Iceland frozen turkey crown for 30 euros and when we purchased it on boxing day it had been reduced down to 10 euros.

A HUGE saving and then loaded back into our freezer until we were ready to cook it in the air fryer.

Turkey Crown Recipe Ingredients

Crown – Your main ingredient is the turkey crown. Of course, we are using the Bernard Matthews Golden Norfolk Turkey Crown. The better quality turkey crown you can buy, the better the turkey will be once cooked.

Oil – I recommend some extra virgin olive oil in a spray bottle that you can spray onto the skin of the turkey. This will help create that wonderfully crispy skin.

Seasoning – I also recommend seasoning your turkey with salt, pepper, and your favourite herb. Mixed herbs, sage, thyme, oregano will work well.

Foil – We are using a stuffed turkey crown and you need the foil to stop the stuffing falling out. Then if any of the stuffing falls out, it lands on the foil and you reserve it.

Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in our turkey crown in the air fryer, it has just been our Philips Air Fryer. We have this one and its wonderful for many types of air fryer recipes and roasts meats perfectly.

How To Cook A Turkey Crown In An Air Fryer?

air fryer turkey crown instructions
  • Cook. Place the turkey crown, breast side down into the air fryer basket and cook for 25 minutes.
  • Foil. When the air fryer beeps, remove the turkey, and place a layer of foil in the air fryer. Then place the turkey crown back in, but this time breast side up. You are then using the foil to catch any bits of stuffing that fall out. If your turkey crown has no stuffing, then no need to add the foil. Carry on air frying for a further 15 minutes.
  • Check. Cut into the thickest part of the turkey to check if it is cooked. If it is not cooked, cook for a further 15 minutes and check it again.
  • Serve. Allow the turkey to rest before carving and then serving.

How Long To Cook A Turkey Crown?

The turkey crown cooking times vary depending on the size of your turkey crown. We found that with our turkey crown that in total it took 55 minutes.

Though do note, that we were cooking a 2.2kg turkey crown and with it being stuffed it does add a little longer on the cook time.

What Temperature To Cook A Turkey Crown?

We recommend a temperature of 180c/360f for cooking a turkey crown in the air fryer. This is because go too hot and you will have turkey done on the outside and not the inside.

Plus, cook your turkey crown at too high a temperature and you risk a dry turkey.

Notes

Stuffed. We used a stuffed turkey crown and when the turkey is stuffed it increases the cook time. If your turkey is not stuffed reduce the cook time by about 20 minutes.
Size. We used a 2.2kg turkey crown and it just fitted in the Philips Air Fryer XL. If you have a smaller turkey, then I would aim for a total cook time of 45 minutes.
Crown. If you are not familiar with a crown, it is British for a bone in turkey breast.
Turning. It’s important that your turkey crown is turned and that you start breast side down first. This stops you having a dry turkey and stops the turkey from getting very brown on one side and then pale on the other.
Seasoning. We used mixed herbs on our turkey crown. You can swap this for thyme, parsley, or Italian seasoning.
Foil. If your turkey crown is not stuffed, you don’t need the foil. The foil is used to stop the turkey stuffing from escaping when it is breast side up. Or if you would like to add stuffing to your turkey use our air fryer stuffing balls recipe.

  2. Is that correct 55 mins in total for a 2kg crown? Also would this be on Air Fry setting, I have Roast and Bake modes on my machine. Thank you x

    • Hi Sam,

Yes that is correct, It is cooked in Philips air fryer so the air circulates as i would say the best as the basket sits quite high, if you have a Cosori air fryer the basket sits lower so it could take longer, we always use a digital thermometer so we can accurately tell when it is above the 70c/140f. The bake and roast functions control the speed of the fan so can change the times so we just use the air fry setting on nearly everything we have cooked 🙂
