Air Fryer Ham & Cheese Sandwich
Welcome to our leftover ham week here on Recipe This. Yesterday we showed you how to make stromboli in air fryer and today is the turn of an air fryer ham and cheese sandwich.
Or as us Brits would call it an air fryer ham and cheese toastie!
Like many kids that grew up in the 1990’s the cheese toastie was a staple comfort food that you had on a regular basis.
I could write an essay on all the different places that I have had cheese toasties.
In the kitchen made lovingly by my mum, in British cafes, on holidays abroad and of course when we got our own toastie machine, we would make them ourselves.
You would butter one side and then it would cook while you sliced the cheese, that side would then have a lot more colour on it than the other! Then you would add the cheese, load up the other slice of buttered bread and then press down on the toastie machine.
It never closed properly though, as it could never cope with thick slices of bread! Then when it was cooked, and that cheese melted out of it, there was no better smell or taste in the world.
Looking back over everything that I ate throughout childhood I would say the cheese toastie was in my top 10 favourite comfort foods.
In fact, I am making myself hungry just thinking about eating air fryer cheese and ham sandwiches.
Can You Make A Toastie In Air Fryer?
This is one of the first things we tried to do back in 2011 with our first Philips Air Fryer. Our toastie machine was broken and we were craving cheese toasties.
Quite often we don’t have ham in and will make air fryer cheese toasties like this one below:
Can You Air Fry Sandwiches?
Yes you can. Air fried sandwiches are delicious and are better than what you would achieve from cooking a sandwich under the grill.
The air fryer will do a perfect job of melting the cheese, making the bread crispy like a toastie machine, and of course warming up your fillings of choice.
I no longer have a toaster for example and instead make air fryer toast.
Air Fry A Sandwich
What I find so interesting about having a worldwide audience at Recipe This, is when you have a famous food and its called different things around the world. Or you can be in the same country and have different names for it in different states.
When you air fry a sandwich this rule applies.
I asked my readers what they would call my air fryer ham and cheese sandwich, and these are the most common answers:
- Air Fryer Ham & Cheese Melt
- Air Fryer Ham & Cheese Sliders
- Air Fryer Ham & Cheese Toastie
- Air Fryer Panini
- Air Fryer Toasted Sandwich
Though for me, I grew up with the amazing toastie machine and I would call it an air fryer ham and cheese toastie.
Sandwich In Air Fryer
You are probably wondering how different a sandwich in air fryer is to your regular method of making a grilled ham and cheese.
The most important thing to learn if you have an air fryer with a basket (not air fryer oven) is that because of the way the air circulates you need secure your bread and cheese in place otherwise it will do a runner into the air vents.
For example, you can see below the cheese being secured with cocktail sticks:
