Frozen Butternut Squash

One of my favourite veggies is butternut squash and I wish it was in season all year around.

My love for butternut squash started way back in 2007 after having lunch at Manchester United. It came with a yummy, creamy butternut squash soup and since then I have been completely hooked on it.

But of course, I HATE butternut squash when its out of season and peel and start dicing it, only to realise that the seeds are so big, and you have hardly got any butternut squash for your money.

So, this summer, I jumped at the chance to buy frozen butternut squash.

The frozen butternut squash that I bought was already diced and all I then needed to do was plan how I was going to cook it and season it so that it tasted AMAZING.

Today, I am going to be sharing with you roasting frozen butternut squash using the air fryer, seasonings for butternut squash and how I use diced butternut squash in various recipes.

Do You Thaw Frozen Butternut Squash Before Roasting?

No need to thaw frozen butternut squash before roasting.

When I roast frozen butternut squash in the air fryer, it goes in straight away whilst still frozen.

I then air fry butternut squash and even better which doesn’t happen in the oven, you are collecting the excess water from the butternut squash in the bottom of the air fryer.

Frozen Squash Ingredients

Frozen Squash Ingredients

Squash – I recommend using at least one bag of frozen butternut squash cubes. This is because they are small, hold a lot of water and it soon goes down to nothing once it has been air fried. We did 1kg/2.2lbs (2 bags of 500g) in the air fryer.

Seasonings – Then for seasonings because frozen squash can be rather bland you will need loads of seasonings. I went with salt, pepper, sweet paprika, and coriander.

Oil – I also recommend some extra virgin olive oil to help make your frozen cubed butternut squash crispier as it cooks.

Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this frozen butternut squash air fryer recipe it has just been our Cosori Air Fryer. We have this one and its wonderful for many types of air fryer recipes.

What Do You Put On Butternut Squash?

I recommend cooking frozen butternut squash with the seasonings that fit in with what you are serving your butternut squash with.

Seasonings for butternut squash that work well include cinnamon, nutmeg for a more fall flavour. Or coriander, mixed herbs, thyme, basil etc for when serving the butternut squash with some roasted meat.

What To Do With Cubed Butternut Squash?

When I cook frozen butternut squash in the air fryer, it goes one of two ways. Either the cubed butternut squash is used as a side dish for dinner and then served with some meat. Such as on the side of air fryer frozen breakfast sausage or on the side of air fryer lamb steaks.

The other idea with cubed butternut squash, is to cook squash in the air fryer first and then use it in soups or sauces. Such as soup maker cheese sauce that uses butternut squash as the hidden veggie, or in our slow cooker veggie korma.
