Easy Barbecue Sauce Recipe With Ketchup

I will admit it now, as a kid I absolutely hated barbecue sauce. I would much rather have mayonnaise, tomato ketchup or thousand island.

I hated barbecue sauce as I found the flavour way too overpowering and avoid it at all costs.

Fast forward to 2012 and the year I turned 30. Myself, the hubby and our eldest son Kyle, were on our first trip to the US and were at a waterpark on International Drive.

I had paid for one of those eat as much as you like all day passes and was determined to get value for money.

Among the great food was pulled pork in barbecue sauce. Even though I have always been a big fan of pulled pork, I never tossed it in barbecue sauce. I know that must be illegal right?

I tried some and loved every mouthful.

Then I went back for seconds and then thirds.

Then for the rest of our five weeks in the US, I ate pulled pork at every opportunity.

I then went home and tried some shop bought barbecue sauce. Just to see if it was a kid thing and that I had grown out of my fussy eating.

Well, I still hated it.

It turns out that barbecue sauce in the US and the UK differs quite a lot and US barbecue sauce is a million times better.

That was when I decided that I must make my own barbecue sauce if I want to enjoy it and I did.

I slaved over a stovetop and then waited patiently for it to reduce and eventually I had this amazing barbecue sauce.

Fast forward to getting a soup maker and I have realised that the easiest way to make homemade barbecue sauce is to add ketchup and make it in the soup maker.

But with a magical extra ingredient, you can dump everything into the soup maker and come back in 20 minutes to a big batch of barbecue sauce.

I am sure if you are like me, the chances are you will have the ingredients for this quick ketchup bbq sauce in your pantry already:

Ketchup – The tomato ketchup works as the base for this homemade barbecue sauce. Any will do and its all about personal preference. Or try our healthy tomato ketchup recipe to make this sauce even healthier.

Apple Cider – I have experimented with barbecue sauce and have found less apple cider works best, otherwise it can be overpowering.

Golden Syrup – I have found that for the best sugary flavour to barbecue sauce that golden syrup works best. But you can swap this for honey, maple syrup etc.

Mustard – Any mustard will do. I usually have either powdered in my pantry or French mustard in my fridge.

Potato – Just one small potato will replace the cornstarch and will naturally thicken your barbecue sauce.

Garlic – You only need a small amount of garlic and by doing so it improves the flavour of the barbecue sauce. You can use either cloves or minced garlic.

Worcester – I little Worcester sauce is essential in a barbecue sauce. It also gives a great balance of flavour with the other ingredients in this recipe.

For kitchen gadgets I am just using my Ninja soup maker. If you live in the US this is known as the Ninja hot and cold blender. They are amazing and you dump your ingredients and then come back when it has beeped.
