My Advice To New Morphy Richards Soup Maker Owners

I have been using soup makers since 2014 and this is the advice, I would give it anyone that is planning on getting a soup maker or has just bought one:

The Morphy Richards soup machine is the perfect kitchen gadget because it allows you to make absolutely delicious soup or smoothies with hardly any effort. You can throw in your ingredients; select the function you wish to do and then serve.

It really is as simple as that.

I recently bought an Instant Pot and wrote my Instant Pot Review about my Instant Pot and have always found that it can be really hard to get your head around all the functions and it is like learning to cook again.

I love it and all, but it can be a scary process when you first start with it.

Compare this to the Morphy Richards Soup Makers and you have very little to learn apart from a few basic lessons:

  • Always stay between the minimum and maximum levels as indicated on the front of the soup maker.
  • Make sure that your ingredients are well chopped so that it will cook and blend well.
  • Always place enough water into the soup maker so that your soup can cook properly, but at the same time don’t put too much in so that your soup tastes like dishwasher water.
  • Whatever you do NEVER over fill it or the lid wont slot in properly.

We also recommend that when you first start with your soup maker that you have a few practice runs, with the chunky setting and do this each time you test out a new soup maker recipe.

This is because when you first get started it can be hard to understand the balance of liquid, watery vs hard vegetables and of course having the correct balance of flavour.

BUT if you start off by using the chunky setting you can have a look when it has finished whether or not it needs more liquid to mix with or if it needs more flavouring or if you need to reduce the liquid before blending.

For example – take this soup maker leek & potato soup. It is the most talked about recipe online for failing in the soup maker and the reason people complain is that they say it is like dishwasher water.

They have simply gone wrong by adding too much liquid and blending it from the start.

If they made chunky soup, then spent a minute or two checking it and then blended it, then they would get the most delicious result, just like we have.

How Does A Soup Maker Work?

But before we dive deeper into using the Soup Maker here is some interesting information about soup makers in case you don’t have one yet:

How To Make Soup In A Soup Maker?

To make soup in a soup maker is EASY. You load into your soup maker:

  • Soup Ingredients
  • Water/Stock
  • Seasoning

Then press a button and you can come back to perfectly cooked soup. I call it dump and start soup because you dump the ingredients into the soup maker and then press start!

Why Does My Soup Maker Burn On The Bottom?

If you experience burning on the bottom of your soup maker, it is because of lack of liquid. Think of it a bit like when you cook in a pan on the stove and when you don’t have enough liquid it leaves burn marks.

Or when you cook pasta and it burns because you have left it on too long and the pasta has been starved of liquid.

To solve this problem, make sure you have sufficient liquid that is touching the base. Though if you don’t have much in your soup maker the water on top is fine. It just depends on which soup you are making. If I am stuffing a lot in, then I will add liquid first.

Understanding The Morphy Richards Soup Maker Buttons

Soup Maker Recipes | Discover what the buttons mean on your Morphy Richards Soup Maker from RecipeThis.com

On the Morphy Richards Soup & Smoothie Maker there are 4 main buttons:

Smooth Soup – If you want just a traditional creamy soup like parsnip soup, cream of tomato, cream of mushroom or even butternut squash soup then this is what you press.

Chunky Soup – This is for when you want delicious chunky soup. You simply click on mode on your soup maker and press it down until chunky is highlighted. It will then set it to 28 minutes and you can then leave the soup machine to do the work for you.

Drinks – Then you have the drinks tab. Perfect for if you want to make summer smoothies, hot chocolates or milkshakes.

Blender – The last on the list is the blender. Perfect for if you have some food you want to blend or if you are making chunky soup, but want it partly smooth.

Morphy Richards Soup Maker Tips & Tricks

Soup Maker Recipes | Here are my top tips and tricks for using your Morphy Richards Soup Maker from RecipeThis.com

Before you go we decided to put together our top tips for using the Morphy Richards Soup Maker so that you can get the most out of it.

#1 – Lots Of Soup Makers Are Similar

There are lots of similar soup makers out there and all the recipes featured on here are based on the basic Morphy Richards model and then more recently the Morphy Richards Soup & Smoothie.

We find that machines are incredibly similar – so if you don’t have the same one we have you will find it easy to adapt to your machine.

#2 – Leftovers Are Great!

We throw in a lot of our leftovers from our meals into the soup machine. With its blend function it can blend all your leftover meals into soups.

We also use it for baby food blending. We have a toddler and a baby and by use throwing in the rest of our food we can make a great meal for them without needing any other equipment.

#3 – Add ½ Litre Of Water & Blend

Just throw into it half a litre of water and blend and you have a quick clean for your soup machine. Forget having to scrub at it for hours, this can do the trick of cleaning it out and then a quick wipe and it is done for next time.

#4 – Don’t Reheat

Now this is a HUGE MISTAKE that we made. That is reheating the soup by putting it back on for a couple of minutes.

It is not like a saucepan on the hob where you just reheat it, what it does instead is cooks it, leaving you with burnt over cooked soup.

#5 – Just Add Lemon

If you burn the bottom of your soup maker I suggest that you slice some lemon and cook it for 5 minutes. It will then add a lemon layer to the bottom and sides and then a quick wipe and you can have it all clean as new.

#6 – Get The Liquid Balance Right

Too much liquid and you have a soup like dishwasher water; add too little and you could break your soup machine.

Test out what works best with your recipe so that you can get it right. You learn how to get the liquid balance correct and then the rest will follow.

#7 – Start In Your Comfort Zone

Just like with anything new that you buy always start with beginner steps first. Start with a really easy soup such as potato and leek soup and then expand your knowledge from there.

You could try out a new soup everyday for a month and then watch as you get more and more confident and as you learn brand new soups.

#8 – Decide What YOU Want To Get Out Of It

Are you looking for weight loss? In which case focus on loads of vegetables and a good stock. Compared to if you just want hearty soups in which case you can add all kinds of things to the mix.

Also if you want to remain frugal grab vegetables on offer at the supermarket or use up your own vegetables that are looking a little old.

#9 – Start With Chunky Soup

I always say start with chunky soup because with a chunky soup if you have not added enough liquid or if you have added too much, you can then adjust it before blending. Set it to the chunky setting, then inspect it, adjust liquids and then blend.

Another thing I do, is if the soup is really hot and I am starving, is I will blend it with some Greek Yoghurt to cool it down quicker!

#10 – Chop Your Vegetables Small

If you want blended soup you have to appreciate that the blender blade is not a professional blender. It’s just a small blender on a soup maker.

Therefore if you wish to blend your soup make sure hard vegetables are well chopped. By hard vegetables I am talking about the likes of carrots, parsnips, swede and butternut squash.

  1. Hi I wonder if you can help, I have the Morphy Richards compact soup maker and thus far it’s brill, however I’ve noticed that when making some smooth soups such a creamy chicken or blended vegetable, the soup, though tasting great has a rather grainy texture, which I don’t like, any ideas please would be most appreciated.
    Thanks
    Jean

    • Hi Jean,

I know what mean with the grainy texture, the only way around it that we have found is to get a hand held blender and mix the soup with that if making a smooth soup. I do not know if it is a design issue with the bender not been able to smooth the mixture but the smooth soups all come out like that so the only way we could get it properly smooth was with a hand blender, we generally just put it on chunky soup and then if we need to blend it use a hand blender. I know not an ideal solution but it is the best we have found, the soups do taste delicious that it cooks though 🙂

      Thanks for your comment!

  3. Hello,
I cant wait to purchase this soup maker already coming up with loads of recipes I’d like to try!!
Just wondering, could I use this to make broths, such as chicken noodle broth and turkey broth
And even would it make a ramen noodle broth???
    Many thanks,
    Saskia

    • Hi Saskia,

It can do all those but note it is a cheaper soup maker and we found it just was not big enough depending on how many you are making the broths for. So we have now upgraded to this one here:

      https://amzn.to/2UOPazK

Just because we use it a lot and feed 5 people and it is working great, but if there is only a couple of people you are making soup/broth for then the Morphy Richards is great 🙂

  4. Hi
Can you make any sort of deserts in a soup maker. Maybe rice pudding, custards that you make from (custard powder and milk) porridge also smoothies I think you can make.

    • Hi Ann,

We have not really explored the desserts yet but you can do pretty much anything in it where you can boil then blend, but the custard could burn quite easily on the bottom of the soup maker.

We probably use it more for smoothies and we have done a few non soup recipes such as, chicken liver pate, macaroni cheese. Here is a link to our soup maker recipes and are newest ones are made with a ninja soup maker and our older recipes are made with the Morphy Richards soup maker:

  5. Hi, I have been enjoying soup making in the M R for about a year. Today I turned it on as usual and left the room. When I came back after 25 minutes or so the machine was beeping and all lights were flashing. I unplugged and tried again, same result. I took out some liquid, it was on the max line but this did not help. Any ideas?

    • Hi Hilary,

Sounds like you could have some water in element thats connects the top to the base of the soup maker. Try and dry the connections and try again. If that does not work then if in warranty take it back to the shop and let them have a look 🙂

  6. Do you have to put 1300 mls of water in as minimum as very thin. Also find when putting in lots of veg I then can’t put blended lid on What am I doing wrong please ?

    Reply
    • Hi Lizzie,

I am not sure if that is the minimum you have to use, and we reduced the amount of water when using a lot of vegetables because they hold a lot of water depending on which vegetables you are cooking. Also yes if you fill above the max line the lid can be hard to put on, we used to spread the vegetables out and made sure there was space in the middle of the jug for the lid to sit securely 🙂
