Kidney Beans In Instant Pot

This dried beans week has been great fun and I love to do a new theme here on Recipe This. In the last 6 years we have done more themes than I can remember and its great fun to celebrate a certain kitchen gadget, or a certain type of cooking.

We have done instant pot black beans, instant pot black eyed peas and yesterday we shared with you instant pot white beans.

The idea came about, when we first moved to Beverley and relocated from Portugal. Unlike in Portugal we had access to this fantastic shop that sold all kinds of dried beans and pulses.

I have become a regular visitor to the shop and love that I can weigh out what I need and then avoid food waste too.

This is also what I was thinking about with this instant pot red kidney beans recipe. You see how many of us (lets be honest now) only ever cook with red kidney beans when we have a chilli con carne?

I know that from personal experience this is my only time.

What you can do is use one of these places, buy just enough dried kidney beans and cook them in the instant pot.

It makes it very cheap to make and then you can freeze any leftovers from your chilli con carne and follow the rule of cook once, eat twice.

Can You Put Kidney Beans In An Instant Pot?

Yes, you can. Kidney beans in the instant pot are so easy to cook and its my favourite way for cooking dried kidney beans.

You don’t have to soak your kidney beans first, just add rinsed red kidney beans to the instant pot and let your favourite kitchen gadget do its magic.

Plus, dried kidney beans have not had salt added or other extras, like they have when you buy a can of them from your local supermarket.

Dried Beans In Instant Pot

I have tried many dried produce in the instant pot now. And many people ask me what dried food is like in the instant pot and I always say natural.

That is because when you buy canned foods, it often has a lot of salt added to it (or sugar) and then when you try it without all the rubbish it can taste rather plain.

The best way to solve this problem is to add a quality stock as it cooks. I make my own instant pot veggie stock, freeze it into cubes and then cook these frozen cubes in the instant pot with the beans.

It makes the beans taste amazing and you forget about how healthy they are and what goodness is in them.

Kidney Beans Instant Pot Ingredients

Beans – For your kidney beans in the instant pot, you will need some dried red kidney beans. I recommend getting quality kidney beans as they will reflect in the taste and texture of the finished recipe.

Stock – The second essential ingredient for cooking kidney beans in the instant pot, is the stock. Please don’t skip this as this is what makes dried beans taste good. I recommend either our instant pot chicken stock (good if using for mainly meat dishes) or our instant pot veggie stock. Both we make in the instant pot and then freeze for using in recipes like this.

Water – You also want water as well as the stock to balance out the flavour and so that there is enough liquid to go to pressure.

Seasoning – Before adding seasoning to your kidney beans decide what recipes the beans are going to be in. Then choose seasoning around that. For example, if it’s for chilli con carne I would add cayenne and some dried coriander. Then salt and pepper works well for a good all round taste.

Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this instant pot kidney beans recipe it has just been our Instant Pot. We have this one and it’s my favourite and great for a lot of dried foods that you want to avoid a soak with.

Plus, we recommend you head over to our instant pot recipes category as we have many electric pressure cooker recipes and have been using instant pots for 5 years.

Kidney Beans Instant Pot Tips & Tricks

  • Don’t skip the veggie stock step. Using homemade instant pot veggie stock will transform your kidney beans. Otherwise, they will be rather boring and bland and will lack flavour.
  • Even though I used the instant pot, this kidney beans instant pot recipe will work with any electric pressure cooker.
  • You can store leftover cooked beans in your fridge and use them over a few different meals.
  • Add seasonings that fit in with what you are using the beans for. For example, if we are using them for a chicken summer salad, we will add tarragon along with some salt and pepper.
  • The ratio is mentioned in the recipe card and once you get used to the ratio it will be easy to remember for future dried beans batches.
  • Remember to allow your kidney beans to cool completely before placing into storage jars otherwise you will get a lot of condensation on them.

Interesting Instant Pot Trick – Use hot water from the tap when adding water to the instant pot. It will then speed up the time it takes to go to pressure.

Notes

Texture. We all like our kidney beans different. 30 minutes with a NPR will produce just cooked white beans that don’t go to mush and is perfect for mixing with rice or into a salad for a one pot dinner. If you want mushy beans do a 40 minute cook time and then do a natural pressure release.
Quantities. One recipe is 2 cups of kidney beans, and they will make double when cooked.
Frozen Stock. Your frozen stock sits on top and will defrost as the beans cook, creating a much more flavoursome beans recipe.
