Like many people around the world, my introduction to white beans, was via Heinz. The way Heinz baked beans made its way on your full English breakfast, or with some toast, or was loaded with sausages over pizza.
It never occurred to me as a child, that you could in fact, cook your own white beans and then serve them in a stew or a soup and that they didn’t have to be loaded with sugar in a tomato sauce.
Nowadays, as a 40 year old that loves cooking from scratch, I cant stand the taste of Heinz baked beans, but love beans added to meals to fill me and my family up.
But then you hear that you must soak your beans and that they take ages to cook and I believe this puts many people off and they buy a can of beans either Heinz or just in water from the supermarket.
That’s when I want to introduce you to white beans in the instant pot. There is no soaking involved and you can cook white beans from scratch in the instant pot, quicker than you can cook a whole chicken.

What Are White Beans?
White beans are the name given to a family of different white coloured beans. In my opinion it gives a much easier explanation when people don’t understand what beans to buy. And its why I am calling todays recipe instant pot white beans, rather than instant pot haricot beans or instant pot navy beans.
You search online for instant pot haricot beans (what they are called in the UK) and all you see are results for instant pot navy beans.
Think of white beans as a universal name, just like following a potato recipe that calls for white potatoes. It gives you the choice of which ones you will personally use where you live.
Are Navy Beans & Haricot Beans The Same Thing?
Yes, they are. Navy beans is what haricot beans are called in the US. Also, I notice most of Europe refer to them as haricot beans.
For example, when we shopped in Portugal and in Spain, we noticed that they were referenced as haricot beans.
Yet, I used to be confused when I heard of navy beans and couldn’t find them anywhere. Only to realise they were the same thing just a name specific to the USA.
Why Are Haricot Beans Called Navy Beans?
The name navy beans happened in the USA because it was associated with the American navy.
During the early 1900’s the navy cooked a lot of haricot beans for the sailors because out of all the different beans they were the highest in fibre and filled up the sailors.
Now navy beans aka haricot beans are still recommended in diets such as Weight Watchers and Slimming World because they fill you up and help you reduce your calories.
Instant Pot White Beans No Soak
Hang on a minute. Instant pot white beans are no soak…. How does this happen?
Well, when you pressure cook food, it removes the need for a soak and this same rule applies to instant pot chickpeas, instant pot black beans and instant pot black eyed peas too.
All you need to do when cooking white beans in the instant pot, is to rinse them under a tap to make sure they are clean and also get rid of any broken white beans.
Then your white beans are loaded into the instant pot and the instant pot works its magic!

White Beans Instant Pot Ingredients
Beans – For your white beans in the instant pot, you will need some dried haricot beans, navy beans or some other beans that are labelled as white beans.
Stock – The second essential ingredient for cooking white beans in the instant pot, is the stock. Please don’t skip this as this is what makes dried beans taste good. I recommend either our instant pot chicken stock (good if using for mainly meat dishes) or our instant pot veggie stock. Both we make in the instant pot and then freeze for using in recipes like this.
Water – You also want water as well as the stock to balance out the flavour and so that there is enough liquid to go to pressure.
Seasoning – Before adding seasoning to your white beans decide what recipes the beans are going to be in. Then choose seasoning around that. For example, if it’s for summer pastas I would add oregano or basil. Then salt and pepper works well for a good all round taste.

How To Cook White Beans In Instant Pot?
- Rinse. Start by rinsing your navy beans under a cold tap and getting rid of any bad bits.
- Load. Then load up your instant pot with dried beans, water, veggie stock and seasonings.
- Cook. Pressure cook for 30 minutes and then do a quick pressure release.
- Stir. Using a silicone spatula, stir your just cooked white beans before serving.

How Long To Cook White Beans In Instant Pot?
You will be impressed with the instant pot white beans cooking time. In fact, pressure cooker white beans (once they have gone to pressure) take JUST 25 minutes.
After a quick pressure release you have perfect white beans that you can use in a lot of different recipes.
White Beans Instant Pot Tips & Tricks
- Don’t skip the veggie stock step. Using homemade instant pot veggie stock will transform your haricot beans. Otherwise, they will be rather boring and bland and will lack flavour.
- Even though I used the instant pot, this white beans instant pot recipe will work with any electric pressure cooker.
- You can store leftover cooked beans in your fridge and use them over a few different meals.
- Add seasonings that fit in with what you are using the beans for. For example, if we are using them for a chicken casserole, we will add tarragon along with some salt and pepper.
- The ratio is mentioned in the recipe card and once you get used to the ratio it will be easy to remember for future dried beans batches.
- Remember to allow your white beans to cool completely before placing into storage jars otherwise you will get a lot of condensation on them.
Interesting Instant Pot Trick – Use hot water from the tap when adding water to the instant pot. It will then speed up the time it takes to go to pressure.

Instant Pot White Beans
- Rinse under a cold tap and then place into the instant pot 2 cups of haricot beans.
- Add 1.5 cups of water, followed by seasonings, and mix well.
- Add a frozen vegetable stock cube on top.
- Place the lid on the instant pot. Set the valve to sealing and cook for 25 minutes on the beans setting.
- Do a quick pressure release, stir, and serve.
