#Airfryer | How To Clean Your Airfryer

Welcome to How To Clean Your Airfryer. Here at RecipeThis.com we have the Philips XL Airfryer and this is how we keep it clean, maintain it and make sure that it will last.

My first ever Airfryer that I bought was the Philips Airfryer (it was this one) and I am really proud to say that it lasted over 5 years.

Of course, as time went on it looked battered and bruised, just because it had received so much action.

But it still worked and it did an excellent job of cooking all the air fried food that we had fallen in love with.

Cleaning & Maintaining Your Airfryer

You must appreciate that the Airfryer will lose its beautiful shiny just bought look and will need maintaining and looking after just like a new fridge freezer would.

I suggest that you do the following:

#1 Prevent Excessive Sticking

There will always be a lot of Airfryer recipes that will create a sticky mess of some kind or another. Think about each time you have chicken wings, chocolate chip cookies, chicken tikka or even pizza.

The mess is out of control and you can imagine spending hours and hours cleaning out your Airfryer.

I prevent my sticky food from sticking by using Airfryer Accessories.

Then it is very much like when you are using containers in the oven or under the grill and it means a lot less cleaning for your Airfryer.

#Airfryer | Airfryer Grill Pan

I use my grill pan when doing something that is likely to drip to below. That way it is just like grilling from a normal grill and you can then pour your leftovers that it has dripped through with, to the bin. Then you can simply wipe clean the grill pan when you have finished cooking and it stops less of a clean up operation.

#Airfryer | Airfryer Non -Stick Baking Dish

I use my baking pan because it is the fairy godmother of the kitchen. You simply place your ingredients into the baking pan and cook as usual. I particularly love this option for making chocolate banana bread, bread buns and pizza. It is non-stick so I just add a little flour round the bottom and sides and it’s just a simple wipe clean at the end.

#Airfryer | Airfryer Reusable Baking Mat

I use my baking mat all the time and its weird if I don’t have it out ready to use or drying away on the draining board. You simply place it into your Airfryer and then place your cooking items over it. It is especially perfect for chocolate chip cookies and OMG they taste just as good. Then you simply wipe clean the baking mat and its ready for next time. I also recommend you buy an XL baking mat and then chop it to size for 2 baking mats that fit into the Airfryer and then just slot it into place each time you air fry something sticky!

#Airfryer | Airfryer Ramekins

I use my ramekins all the time and it’s because if you put 4 of them next to each other then they are the perfect size for mini baking. You can poach eggs in them, do eggs and bacon, mini mug cakes and so much more.

If you just use these Airfryer Accessories then it will reduce your sticking without you needing to deep clean your Airfryer. It’s a case of if you look after your Airfryer then cleaning becomes so much easier and you don’t have to deep clean your Airfryer each time you make cookies.

#2 Add A Non-Stick Coating

Another great option is to give your basket a great non-stick coating when you are preheating it. With a lot of Airfryer recipes that require a preheat of up to 10 minutes. Before you set it to the preheat wipe it dry with a baby wipe and then rub a little olive oil into the bottom and sides. This will give it an amazing non-stick coating while it is warming up.

#3 Clean The Airfryer Weekly

The basket is the worst part for ending up with ground on dirt stuck to it. If you ever attempt to do KFC chicken or fish tacos in your Airfryer then you’ll understand exactly what I am talking about. It is harsh and you will feel like you need to soak it for longer than when you cook roast turkey in the oven at Christmas.

To clean your Airfryer once a week you need to:

How To Clean Your Airfryer
  1. Remove the bottom Airfryer pan and the basket from the Airfryer unit.
  2. Rinse out any oils/excess liquid from cooking into a old tub suitable for recycling (Think old yoghurt, ice cream tubs).
  3. Place the pan and the basket into hot water with some washing up liquid.
  4. Leave it to soak for an hour.
  5. Give the sides and bottom of the Airfryer pan a good scrub with a gentle cleaning brush (like this one).
  6. Do the same with the basket.
  7. Turn both the pan and the basket upside down and do the bottom of them.
  8. Give it a really good rinse to remove the soap.
  9. Dry it with a kitchen towel and then place it back into the Airfryer unit ready for next time.

#4 Use The Fat Trapper System

How To Clean Your Airfryer

One thing I have never heard of until I discovered the gadget is the Fat Trapper System. It’s a fantastic little gadget and makes the perfect cleaning Plan B for the empty yoghurt tubs.

You have a fat trapper storage system that has bags attached to it and you fill up a bag with the waste from the bottom of your air fryer, and then keep loading it up until your bag is full.

Then replace the bag with a new one as and when you need it.

It makes the clean up operation easier and OMG it is so useful.

Keep it under your sink, next to your air fryer, on a high up shelf away from the kids or even in a spare slot in your pantry.

If You Don’t Clean It Regularly:

An Airfryer is like any other electrical appliance that you own….and that is that it needs to be cleaned and looked after on a regular basis. You need to clean your oven, fridge and freezer regularly otherwise they are horrible and don’t last much past the guarantee.

Well the same applies for the Airfryer. If you leave an Airfryer and don’t clean it for a few months it will be like your deep fat fryer used to be. It will be full of grease, it will smell and it will cook your food at a lower standard than it did before.

We religiously clean ours once a week (sometimes more if we’re recipe testing) and as such it has a life span of about 5 years for each Airfryer.

If you don’t have an Airfryer yet then the one below is the one we have:

  1. Hallo Samantha and Dominic I love your lessons on Air fryers. My husband surprised me with a 23l Milex and I even tried to grill crackling. It came out wonderful. This machine has the grilling rods top and bottom and the airfan at the top. Are there any special instructions on cleaning, as specifically after the crackling experiance the smell last a little bit longer than preferred? Many thanks for all the tips and tricks.Regards Cornelia Pienaar South Africa

    • Hi Cornelia,

So glad it turned out well for you.

I also love cracking in the air fryer and will often cook an instant pot pressure cooker roast pork, slice off the crackling and then crisp up just the crackling in the air fryer.

For the smell and cleaning it, what works well is some lemon and balsamic vinegar.

Add a bowl of them to the air fryer and cook them for 3 minutes in a pryex dish. Then what happens is the steam comes from them and spreads around and creates an easy coating for removing grease and getting rid of bad smells.

      kind regards

      sam

  2. Looks like you turned the air fryer upside down to clean top.
Really a LOT of grease. I’ve never looked at the top. Always make sure I clean basket etc. since I ruined one because it was so burnt on. Then new ‘old’. Basket no longer available. No words under that greasy looking mess!H E L P

    • Hi pat,

That is just the air fryer basket after we have cleaned it and the air fryer we used for this demo was a Philips Air Fryer XXL and the grease drips down and ends up in a pan where you can empty it out into a tub then get rid of it. The top of the air fryer does get dirty and after using wait until it has cooled unplug it and get a damp cloth and wipe the elements and this will get rid of any grease 🙂

    • Hi Dennis,

      Thank you for your comment.

We have not got the air fryer grill combo yet but it is on our list to buy. The closest i think we have done is our Ninja Foodi recipes which is a machine that air fries and pressure cooks like the Instant pot.

Here is a link to all of our Ninja Foodi recipes we have done:

We have done some easy recipes for the beginners in the list so try out those first and see how you go Dennis 🙂
