Air Fryer Oranges
In early 2021, the hubby and I made the decision to leave Portugal and return to England after 13 years living in the Algarve region of Portugal.
We told our loyal readers how much we hated the fact that we couldn’t get spaghetti squash, that we dreamed of drinking a McDonald’s milkshake and how much we longed for a butcher that would provide us with different cuts of lamb at a reasonable price.
Not to mention the fact kitchen gadgets like the instant pot have almost doubled in price since England became independent of the rest of Europe.
But as we packed away our things and got ready for all the food that we have missed, we thought about the food of Portugal that we are going to miss.
We will miss the Portuguese egg tarts, tomatoes being in season all year, the winter sun and cheap eating out.
But also on the list is the endless supply of cheap homegrown oranges. Portugal (like its neighbour Spain) grows a ridiculous amount of oranges. Almost everyone that lives in the country will have 10 orange trees in their gardens and people just cant get through the amount they make.
There is a market trader selling them at the side of the road near where we live, and we buy some whenever possible.
On the way home from the supermarket, we grabbed some and wanted to make some roasted oranges, as a reminder of the great fruit of the Algarve and also to give you something delicious and simple that you can cook in your air fryer.
Plus, as well as our free newsletter, we also have a free air fryer mini course. It is ideal for air fryer beginners or those that want to get more confident with their air fryer. The free course runs for 5 days with a new lesson delivered each day to your inbox.
How To Use Up Oranges?
If you are wondering what to do with leftover oranges beyond orange juice, then look no further than oranges in your air fryer.
You can load up leftover oranges into the air fryer, add your favourite topping, or follow our topping suggestion below.
Can You Put Fruit In An Air Fryer?
Yes, you can! Fruit is fantastic when cooked in the air fryer and there are many fruits can be air fried.
For example, instead of following our roasted orange recipe for the air fryer, you can swap the orange for grapefruit or any other similar fruit.
You can also dehydrate strawberries, dehydrate blueberries and many other fruits, if you have an air fryer with a dehydrator setting, or one that goes cool enough.
As well as this you can also cook grilled peaches in the air fryer, make an air fryer peach cobbler, or make an air fryer apple crisp.
Or even more exciting you can rotisserie a whole fresh pineapple and when you air fry pineapple it is like it is served at a Brazilian restaurant and tastes amazing.
What Are Baked Whole Oranges Like?
Heaven. They are similar to air fryer grapefruit or like you used to eat grapefruit when you were on a very low calorie diet.
But instead of having grapefruit halves with stevia on and wondering if you can handle the bitter flavour of grapefruit, oranges taste much better.
Also, you are adding extra flavour to the oranges, and this makes them a lot tastier and addictive.
You can also throw them into the air fryer quickly when you have a sweet tooth in the evening or for a quick breakfast.
Baked Oranges Ingredients
Oranges – Any orange will do. We just grabbed our oranges from a lady that had just picked them in the field and then took them home. You could feel the heat on them from the Portuguese sunshine. Because they were already warm, we loaded them into the fridge so that they were easier to slice.
Cinnamon – Its all about the sprinkle of cinnamon on top. Just like air fryer pineapple it makes such a huge difference to the flavour. You can also add some pumpkin spice or some nutmeg too.
Honey – Its all about the honey on the top of oranges as it really makes them taste even more delicious and you have a sticky glaze. Though you can swap honey for maple syrup or something similar.
Spray. To get a fantastic crispy look on your oranges, I also recommend that you add a spray of extra virgin olive oil or something similar.
Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this orange air fryer recipe, it has just been our Philips Air Fryer. We have this one and its wonderful for air fryer fruit, as well as for other air fryer desserts.
How To Cook Air Fried Oranges?
- Slice. Slice Your oranges in half so that you have two orange rounds.
- Season. Sprinkle cinnamon onto the tops of your oranges and then drizzle with honey or maple syrup.
- Air Fry. Load the orange halves into the air fryer and cook until you have a grilled texture on your oranges from the honey and then serve whilst still warm.
#1 Tip For Cooking With Oranges
The biggest mistake you can make with air fryer oranges is to add too much cinnamon. If you end up with an orange with loads of cinnamon, it will stop the honey from making the orange crispy and delicious.
A bit like when you add oil to food, and you cook without oil. You can always tell if one is without.
I wanted to show you an example of what a baked orange is like if too much cinnamon is added.
I purposely added too much cinnamon to the top left orange when it was raw:
The look again once cooked and how little of the barbecue grilled look is on the top left:
