Air Fryer Frozen Egg Rolls

Back in late 2018, we thought it would be fun to run an air fryer frozen Christmas appetizers series on Recipe This.

It was great fun, and we visited our local frozen foods supermarket and got lots of supplies. One of the items was frozen egg rolls.

But as it was a while ago now, we decided to go back and update our air fryer frozen egg rolls recipe.

Make it better for you and answer all your questions you often ask me on social media about cooking your egg rolls in the air fryer.

We love to have some frozen egg rolls sat in the freezer for whenever we are in the mood for a Chinese.

Living where we do in Portugal means that we are a long drive from a Chinese takeaway and instead make our own Chinese.

But if you made everything for your Chinese themed night it would take forever, you would lose your sanity and soon lose your love for Chinese food.

Frozen Egg Rolls In Air Fryer

I was the grand old age of 34 when I first tried a proper egg roll. That is because an egg roll is often only associated with American Chinese cuisine and rarely eaten outside of the United States.

It was April 2016 and we were out for lunch with my parents to celebrate my Dad’s birthday at a cheap Chinese. I am not talking a little cheap either, this place was too cheap.

The price for the meal deal was less than a McDonalds meal deal and the food was rather horrible. It was a case of you get what you pay for!

They were including what they called “Spring Rolls” as a free starter. I briefly smelt it and I could smell the horrible peanut oil it had been cooked in. With a son with a nut allergy this put me into protection mode.

I argued with one of my parents’ friends that didn’t trust my judgement and my son ate it anyway. The next day he was ill and it took him a few days to recover.

But in my mind, it wasn’t a delicious spring roll like you expect at the Chinese but a frozen egg roll instead, cooked in some cheap peanut oil in order to keep the cost down.

It makes me realise that when you have egg rolls, it can make a big difference from brand to brand and the method of cooking. I chose some delicious egg rolls from Lidl and cooked them in the air fryer with some extra virgin olive oil spray and they were amazing.

Once you try frozen egg rolls in air fryer, then there will be no going back.

Egg Rolls Vs Spring Rolls

With me mentioning both spring rolls and egg rolls above you’re probably quite confused and you’re probably wondering what is the difference between egg rolls vs spring rolls?

The filling in an egg roll vs a spring roll is often very similar. You can get the traditional stir fry filling, yet you can also get more interesting fillings like Chinese duck or beef.

The pastry in an egg roll is often a lot thicker than what you get with a spring roll. This means that when you cook an egg roll its easy to end up with a soggy tasteless egg roll, where as a spring roll is easier to get right.

The size is often much bigger with an egg roll vs a spring roll. A spring roll if you put them next to an egg roll would often give you 3 compared to 1 egg roll.

You will find either the egg roll or the spring roll at the Chinese Buffet.

Can You Put Frozen Egg Rolls In An Air Fryer?

Absolutely and air fryer frozen egg rolls are delicious. They are ideal for dumping in the air fryer and serving with your favourite Chinese dipping sauce. I also love to cook frozen egg rolls and serve them with egg fried rice or a homemade chow mein.

Frozen Egg Rolls In Air Fryer Oven

You can also cook frozen egg rolls in air fryer oven too. You follow a similar method as using an air fryer basket. But instead you place the egg rolls on the top shelf of the Power Air Fryer Oven.

This ensures that they are crispy and are not soggy and have a much better texture compared to cooking egg rolls in a regular oven.

How To Air Fry Frozen Egg Rolls?

If you are wondering how to cook frozen egg rolls in air fryer, then you will be pleased to know that it is so simple a 2 year old could do it.

Frozen egg rolls in air fryer goes like this:

1. Remove frozen egg rolls from the packaging.
2. Place into the air fryer basket.
3. Brush the pastry.
4. Air fry + serve.

There is a little more to it than that, but those are the simple basics!

How Long To Cook Frozen Egg Rolls In Air Fryer?

If you are wondering how quick the frozen egg rolls air fryer time is, then you will be pleased to know that it is JUST 16 minutes. That is just 8 minutes on each side with either some egg wash or some extra virgin olive oil.

Though if you don’t want them really crispy, then you can do just 8 minutes on one side and they will be cooked.

It just depends on how much of a rush you are in and how crispy you want them.
