Instant Pot Frozen Ribs

Yesterday on Recipe This, we showed you how to cook instant pot frozen shrimp and today we are doing a fun experiment by sharing with you what happened when we cooked instant pot frozen ribs.

When Sofia was a toddler, we had a HUGE coffee table. The carpenter was terrible at following instructions and it was double the size of what we needed.

But it was fantastic for doing a mini buffet on a Saturday night and we would have slow cooker spare ribs or slow cooker chicken wings or slow cooker Asian pulled pork, a cobb salad and some air fryer potato wedges.

It was delicious.

Then the crazy dog we had at the time would leap on the table when we were done and clean up any pulled pork that had been dropped.

He was a Husky cross and incredibly hard work.

But what took the time was all the washing up afterwards. You had the sticky sauce in the slow cooker from the ribs and often we would have slow cooker pulled pork and have the 2nd slow cooker to clean.

Not what you want on a Saturday night.

Because I love sharing with you all how to cook frozen meat in the instant pot, I decided to give instant pot frozen ribs a go and see how they compare to the mess of the slow cooker.

Can You Instant Pot Frozen Ribs?

Yes you can. Frozen ribs are up there with the many other meats you can cook in your instant pot pressure cooker.

Nothing will beat instant pot frozen steak though, as the best instant pot frozen meat you could ever cook.

Cooking Frozen Ribs In Instant Pot

There are many different ways to cook frozen ribs in the instant pot. You are probably most familiar with ribs stood up in the instant pot pressure cooker.

This is often done just so that the large ribs will fit.

But with frozen BBQ spare ribs they are much smaller and don’t need to be cooked like this. Instead we are going to seal them in foil packets.

This will perfectly cook them, and you will have individual portions of spare ribs to eat.

This is also fantastic if you are taking your instant pot travelling with you and works very well for camping.

Your pork ribs will also be perfectly tender thanks to the way the instant pot steams the ribs.

How Do You Steam Ribs In An Instant Pot?

The method of steaming in the instant pot is where you use the trivet to place the food. Then because the food is raised on the trivet and not in the water the food will steam.

You can also use a steamer basket too if you prefer.

How we steam ribs is by using a trivet and then loading foil packets of frozen BBQ spare ribs over it.

How Many Ribs Can You Fit In An Instant Pot?

This will depend on the size of your instant pot. We are using the instant pot 8 quart and because it is the biggest, we can fit more foil packets.

If you are using the mini, I imagine you would be able to cook half.

Also, it will be less if you use a tall trivet. If you have a smaller trivet or a steamer basket then use that to fit more in.

How To Instant Pot Frozen Ribs

The quick version of cooking frozen ribs in the instant pot goes as follows:

  1. Load your spare ribs into foil packets.
  2. Pour a cup of water into your instant pot.
  3. Add the trivet and load up your ribs.
  4. Pressure cook + serve.

There is a little more to it than that, but those are the simple basics!

How Long To Instant Pot Frozen Ribs

The instant pot frozen ribs cooking time is 25 minutes, plus 5 minutes of natural pressure release.

Of course, this doesn’t include the time it takes for the ribs to get to pressure. Though because there is not much liquid, it didn’t take long at all for us.

Instant Pot Reheat Frozen Ribs

The instant pot is fantastic for reheating food and if you have some frozen ribs that need reheating it is ideal.

Load frozen ribs into the instant pot and instead cook for JUST 2 minutes. They are now ready to eat!

I made this for lunch and so so yummy. I used my favourite Jack Daniels bbq sauce and they were the best. Only going to make ribs this way from now on.

Whenever I want to thaw meat, I always use cold tap water. Cover it, change the water every 30 minutes until thawed. I thawed some bacon yesterday, and it only took about 20 minutes in the water. I would imagine that ribs would only be 30-45 minutes… if they’re not completely thawed by then, they’d be pretty darn close and you could toss them on the egg.
